Kyla-- I would normally suggest a cooler in the car with easy to eat fresh or dried fruit, but your diet seems pretty healthy already. Have you thought of a more concentrated home made bar?  A friend of mine who is a Birkie skier in addition to triathlete gave me a this great recipe.  He also made some other changes listed below:

I recommend using oil instead of butter. This morning’s bars had olive oil in them because we’re out of canola. I’ve substituted almonds for the walnuts and dried cranberries for raisins in the past. Also this morning, I used 100% whole wheat flour and I used six eggs instead of four. I also used one cup of chocolate chips instead of ¾ cup. I use the nonfat milk powder, but you don’t really need it. The only reason it’s in there is to boost the protein. The common thread here is that you can mess around with this recipe quite a bit and it’s hard to wreck it.

Seebohar has has this oatmeal recipe.  I have not tried it, but it sounds good and is no doubt great for recovery.

jvanis - 2010-04-15 2:58 PM Well we had our 5k spring run at work today.  Last fall I averaged 7:11/mile and was hoping to break the 20 min mark this spring.  Well I did... kind of.  They had to shorten the course due to some of the non-paved section being flooded from rains the past couple of days.  Quite hilly, I managed to pull a 7:01 average, not quite the under 20 minute pace, but my legs just did not feel strong from the get go.

Oh well sun is now out so a bike ride is in order tonight.

I'd be very happy if my legs didn't feel right and I was still able to run 7:11/mile pace.

I did however do a PB today. My first 10K under an hour. 58:10 almost did it in my age. 57. Not bad considering it was such a nice day that I booked off well.  "Well I just didn't want to work today"  Actually woke up at 3:00 am with a pounding headache and couldn't shake it. Got halfway to work and had to turn around. Slept until 11:00 then felt decent so went to the gym for a short run and it turned into a 10K.

So how hot was the girl you were chasing and how fast was she running?  Just kidding. Great job.  Someday I hope to log a sub 1hr 10K.

Cute but not as cute as our MG women and just fast enough to get me under an hour

You bring up a good point, though -- I am not taking in enough calories during my ride. I'm mixing the Infinit with 2 scoops/bottle, and adding a bottle during the ride, so going through 3 bottles. Really I should go through 4, or mix them stronger. I do eat bloks during the ride, so I am getting more calories there, but probably not more than 150. So I need to look at taking in more calories during the workout as well. Thanks for making me realize that... More food for thought, so to speak!!

Almonds are a delicious snack. Has anyone tried those Forze bars that are supposed to help allay hunger? I'd be interested to see if anyone has tried them...

I think I've posted this before, but my general guideline for fueling on the bike is calories per hour = 2x your lean body mass , which is calculated by taking your weight minus your body fat. For example, I'm 130 lbs at about 9% BF, so 9% of 130 = 11.7 lbs of fat. 130 lbs - 11.7 fat lbs = 118.3 lbs lean body mass. Multiply that by 2 = 236. So I'd shoot for a minimum of 236 calories per hour on the bike. That seems to work well for me in training and racing. So depending on what your Infinit mix is set at, make sure you're getting enough calories!

Kyla, your pre-ride meals sound about right, and obviously post-ride, the chocolate milk is a good recovery drink with protein and some carbs. You might also think about what your carb intake is afterward as well. I don't know enough about your smoothie ingredients, but just make sure you're getting a good amount carbs to restore your glycogen levels so you don't feel so run-down the next morning in the pool.

I tried FORZE bars when they first came out, bought a 12 pack and I threw away about half of them.  They fill you up, but they left me feeling like I ate too much fiber.  Taste is ok, not great.

For what it is worth, Ryan's formula would have me replacing about 30% of the calories I burn per hour at a 75% effort, reasonable, but on the high side of what I take in (or want to take in).  If I didn't have GI issues, I would live at this level, but goal for me is about 15-20% of what I burn.

I do know that when I did not take in calories on my long runs during marathon training, it was critical for me to focus on recovery fueling.  Otherwise, I felt like crap for the next day's run.

I used this spreadsheet for nutrition calculation.

http://www.tri-talk.com/TriTalkNC/TriTalkNC.htm

Came out with similar numbers from a forumla Sam was using so I figure it is close enough.

I'm actually going to be staying with a couple of hot guys dudes from the beach patrol (who are also working the triathlon) a couple of days before Lonestar. I'm going to bribe ask them where we can go to practice our OWS. If you want, email me and I'll shoot one back with my cell number so we can all meetup for a "safe, no DQ'ing" swim somewhere once we're all down there.

Good to know! I see them every once in a while and always wondered.

Excellent points: everyone is a little different and yes, trying to cram too many calories in can definitely cause GI distress. Running is an entirely different beast, at least for me... I'm much better off in line with Suzy's 16-18% of caloric burn and anything above that just doesn't digest for me.

John - ah yes. My recovery drink of choice is the "Fred" from the Hair of the Dog Brewery in Portland, OR. It's a rich golden color, contains ten different hop varieties, is nice and hoppy at 65 IBU, and packs a punch at 10%. Mmmm. I have three bottles in my fridge that I'm saving. Delicious.

Rob Awesome job.... Now run your age... 57 minutes (kind of like golf in shooting your age!).

Tracy- Tell the hubby you want to run a sub 1hr.  He will get you there if you don't get mad at him!  It can be done!

That is my goal when I get back in the roads.  I turn 58 in Sept. and I hope to find a fast 10k in the fall/winter to break my age....really want a sub-55 and I believe that is possible.

Time to start second guessing.  Do y'all eat during a marathon?  I'm planning on running with a fuel belt and using sustained energy, but now I've started re-thinking......

No second guessing, Linda!  Just do what you've been doing on your long runs and you will be fine.  Wait...what have you been doing for your long runs?

How bad is the pain? does it subside into the run? or hurt the entire time?

It gets better after a few minutes. This is why it is different than my stress reaction/stress fracture. That only got worse while running. Also, I can stretch the muscles this time - last time I couldn't get a stretch no matter what position I tried. If I do a forward lunge and press my knee all the way to my chest, pulling myself foward almost to the ground I can feel the muscle stretch. It does seem to help whereas last time NOTHING helped.

The radiologist didn't indicate that there was a problem other than the stress reaction, but I'm not sure how the compartment syndrom thingie is diagnosed. I do have some old stress fractures in my right foot, but my left leg is the one that was injured the worst and the one that picks up the shin splints fastest.

I'll work on the stride and strecthing and see how that goes for a week or two. I'll stay on a track for a bit too. Oh, and ice and streching, definitely.

Thanks for the advice guys!

Oh and about severity - it's NOTHING compared to the stress reaction. That was an 8 or 9, this is a 2 on the pain scale. I couldn't put my foot down without it making me grimace in November. Stairs were nearly enough to make me cry.

WHOA....I suddenly feel out of my league.  Is this the same area where you had a stress reaction?  Even if the pain is a lot less, I would talk to your PT about running on it.  Irritating an area that has been a problem before doesn't seem wise to me.  Personally I would also NOT roller areas that are sore, only those that are tight.  Sounds like you have enough inflammation in those shins, but that is just my philosophy.

No, it's ok! Really! Before it was bone pain, this time it is just sore muscles. I've learned from my past experience and I'm going to try out some of the different suggestions you guys have made. Besides, I'm a military dependant - they don't issue us PT's! lol

Totallty agree with Kim, do what you have done in training.  What did you do in you qualifying marathon?  I am not a solid food eater at all.  It totally messes with my system.  I used to use Infinit Custom Blend for marathons and have just been experimenting with Sustained Energy unflavored for long bike rides (hoping to see use for HIM to IM).  I think you are smart to carry fluids...the water stops are kind of a mess and if you can avoid them it is an advantage.....I tend to rely on them more 17-25 where I am starting to get sick of my Infinit and just want some cold water.

You're going to have a blast....soak it all in...the Expo, take a run in the park with a lot of other athletes, chat it up on the bus and hear people's crazy goals...and enjoy the long bathroom lines.  I am sure people have given you all the ins and outs of Hopkinton, but if not let me know.  I made a few mistakes along the way the first time around.

Do what you have been doing.  That being said I tried GUs for the first time around along with training and my stomach just didn't care for them.  Switched to Hammer Gels for the second one and it was much better.

There is nothing worse than running, getting to mile 16 or so and needing to use the restroom, you know you still have a ways to go, chances are a lot of others are feeling the same way thus lines, and seeing some people using trees/bushes.

I just found it hard to get back up to speed for me.

The second time around no issues, and I stuck with my pace group the entire time until mile 25 then took off.

At the beginning of the army 10 miler, within the first 1/4 mile there were something like 20 guys heading right for the woods to pee.  Never can figure that one out.  Shouldn't you go before the race starts?

Hah yeah, I think a combo of pre-race jitters and cup or two of coffee that people consume trying to expedite the process can work the wrong way for some people.

The craziest thing I saw was a lady in her 30s at mile 15 (after it stopped down-pouring) do a complete change, sports bra and all into dry clothing.

velcromom - 2010-04-15 11:38 PM Time to start second guessing.  Do y'all eat during a marathon?  I'm planning on running with a fuel belt and using sustained energy, but now I've started re-thinking......

My first marathon I saw three guys hit the trees just before mile three.  I thought it's gonna be a long day.

Linda - you're a pro.  Stick to what you have been doing.

At the beginning of the army 10 miler, within the first 1/4 mile there were something like 20 guys heading right for the woods to pee.  Never can figure that one out.  Shouldn't you go before the race starts?

how about the trees just past the start of the marine corps marathon?  were those packed?  i had a lady squat next to me.  there's a picture floating around somewhere.  and yes i went before!!!

Don't remember, it was dark when the race started so I might not have noticed.

SSMinnow - 2010-04-15 5:48 PM I tried FORZE bars when they first came out, bought a 12 pack and I threw away about half of them.  They fill you up, but they left me feeling like I ate too much fiber.  Taste is ok, not great.
Good to know! I see them every once in a while and always wondered.

Delicious.

Nice Ryan...  nothing like starting to drool over beer at 8:00AM on a Friday - that sure does look yummy...  mmmmmm.....  beerrrrr.........

Blasted! I am ni a bummy mood because I have a huge gross ingrown toenail on my right foot (I am sure you all were just dying to know that). Normally mine work themselves out but it looks like this one might actually need the care of a doctor. Anyone know some good home remedies or how long this little sucked might sideline me for.

And other random question while I am at it; On the bike, have you ever just felt like your legs had no power in them? This happened to me on Wesdnesday. I am sure part of it is a bit of overtraining/not having an appropriate rest day last week like I normally do. but I am also wondering if my seat being too low would cause the major loss in power. Typically I average 15MPH on my road bike on this particular course but this week all I could eek out was 14mph. I know my seat is low and needs to come up but I just wanted to see if anything though a low seat could be the cause of power loss or if I should ust attribute it to poor rest.
