What are everyone's Easter plans?

I am doing the traditional thing...I am in Vegas with my wife!

dude.  there is nothing in jewfaq.org that says anything about easter in vegas.   are you sure this is ok?

ha!   have an awesome trip!!!!

edit.  and don't bother going to look for episcopalfaq.org.   it doesn't exist because we can't update it fast enough.

Ok, so I got my regular 5 am swim accomplished this morning and tonight I went out and ran (jogged) 5.6 miles.  My previous longest distance EVER was 3.8 miles.  I stopped and stretched at the half-way point and walked for a short distance once going out and once coming back.  This is coming from someone who has never run more than a mile in her life until a few months ago.  Just wanted you to know!

P.S. Beer IS a recovery drink, isn't it?

recovery?  its an everything drink!   just last night we threw a few back until way past my bedtime.  hit the rack (not kylas rack) then out the door at 6 this morning for a short 5.5-hour ride followed by a 15-minute T run

Let the truth be told...

(GOOD JOB!)

What are everyone's Easter plans?

big girl home from college, with her boyfriend.  We'll go to the sunrise service, hunt for eggs (VERY competitive sport at our house!) and then hubby and I'll do a run (1 week before Big Sur - probably 8-10 miles) and we'll have a big dinner at my in-laws'.  Ham, which I hate, and deviled eggs, which I ADORE.

I LOVE Easter.  For all of the standard religious reasons, and it's just such a feel good holiday.  Spring!!

Oh, and PEEPS!!

OK, who hides and who finds? I was just telling Dave, "Oh s$*#! I haven't been to the store for Easter goodies." He said, "Why bother? The kids don't believe anymore."

I was flabbergasted!! I said, "You mean suddenly we stop hunting for eggs? Is that how your family did it? Cuz it's not how mine did it!" I am so not ready to give up on the Easter Egg Hunt!! And I don't think the kids are either!!

THE SUN IS SHINING IN WASHINGTON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I went out for a lovely, awesome ride with our own Mr. Ryan this morning. He treated me to the 7 Hills of Kirkland (an annual Memorial Day ride around here). Met some new hills and neighborhoods I've never seen (hello, legs!). Good times. For those of you who don't know, Ryan is a super-duper speedy fast cyclist. But he's also a really nice guy. (Not that the two have to be mutually exclusive, of course.) I've been very, very afraid to ride with Ryan. But he was relentless in trying to get me out with him. I was all prepared to ride up hills on my own and meet him at the top, cuz that's how I do it with my friends. But Ryan wouldn't drop me on the hills (no matter how much I suggested that he do just that). He let me set the pace and hung out with me. Good, cuz it helped me not lollygag as much. Bad, because I didn't get to lollygag as much. Ride was hard while we did it, but now that I'm home I don't feel like I did much, darn it!

Just finished baking two parts of the chocolate-caramel-marshmallow-Oreo birthday cake that my daughter requested. It's gonna be an awesome cake, if not a wee bit sweet (just the way she likes her desserts). Made the ice cream to go with it last night.

Have a great weekend, everybody!! I've got a big ole' smile on my face.... Feelin' Groovy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yum, send some my way!!

BTW, I saw a guy on the news living off water and beer, lost some weight and says he feels good too. Drinks about 5 brews a day : )

Very cool about the easter egg hunting.  We're still in the firmly believing stage.  Our son is a much better finder than our daughter so we have set colors they can find.  Hopefully soon we can go the the all out competition.  As kids my brother and I kept doing the easter morning egg hunts after we stopped believing.

As for riding with Ryan, I think that's a great way to get faster.  It's been a humbling year for me on the bike.  I've put in tons of miles but still less than a good portion of the guys on my team.  When we go out I was getting dropped in the first hour or so of the rides (sooner sometimes) now it takes about 3 hours for them to start shedding me off the back of the group.

Seeing a speck off in the distance that was the group you were with is a great way to help motivate you to keep pushing.

Had a massage, a jacuzzi/plunge bath and then a "deluge shower." And NO John, not a golden shower! It sends a lot of water down on you in pulses that feel like they are the size of oranges. Awesome water masssage! Except for tight quads I feel GREAT!

Happy Easter everyone!

I managed to drag myself out of bed this morning and did a 3 hour ride heading inland and up a steep set of hills called "Black Mountain", really beautiful up there and ended up riding in the clouds.

My parents have flown over from the UK and my dad (who nearly died after complications from a heart bypass 12 months ago) has got sick with a really high fever for the past 2 nights. I'm trying to stick to my training but don't want to be a complete a$$hole by not hanging around to check up on him. Life always pulls a few surprises on us!

So Easter's going to be a bit quiet round here, tomorrows the last training day on my program then I'm into the taper week.

Lesson Learned!!

Take it from me...I learned a lesson today.  Went on my training ride on the same course as IronGirl - moderate/hard 15 miles. I know it's not much, but it was a bit hilly, and wanted to gauge on time so I'm not overreaching my goal.

Anyways - I wanted to try some GU Roctane because it has caffeine in it. I got so many for free, so why not, it's just a training session.  Took it before the bike ride, however, throughout the whole ride, I felt like I was making so much spit (not phelgm, but just bubbly spit.  It's either from the GU, or from the milk I had for breakfast - however, I normally have milk nearly everyday, so it never affects me, so it's either the GU or the mixture of the two).

ANNNNNYWAYS - I learned that it's best to spit when your head is pretty much sideways, not just turned just slightly...your wad of spit will most likely end up in your ear/hair.

Take it from me...master your SPIT! :-)

Next lesson - SNOT ROCKETS!

Thanks Kim, just thought I'd let you know he seems to have recovered, fever settled late morning and he seems ok tonight.

Yesterday he collapsed in the bathroom and looked dead when we got in there so that gave us all a fright!

Up until last year he was perfectly well and fit but the had a cardiac arrest whilst having a routine exercise stress test and it's all been downhill from there.

Anyway, thanks for your concern.

Back to tri training now.

I'm thinking about doing my first marathon next year, anyone got a link to a good training program???

I'm VERY good at sticking to a program so once I've decided on a marathon (I'm thinking Gold Coast Marathon 2012) and got a program I'll be committed.

LMAO, at least John knows my role in the group!

David, I will be thinking about your family this weekend.  Very scary when a parent is ill.  Many of us in the group have experienced it.  For the marathon plan you may want to check out Pfitz.  When I didn't have a coach, that was the plan I loosely followed.  His book is a good read as well.

Nothing specific on the calendar for Easter this year except getting the house in order to put on the market. Oh and some longer workouts in prep for REV3 which apparently is right around the corner.

Happy Easter everyone!

Everyone have a great weekend and Easter. My wife has been sick so we usually have family in, but we are actually going to the Cheescake Factory for Easter dinner. Something just does not feel right about that. But she asked me if I was going to cook instead.....this is not my strength....good with popcorn in the microwave but that is about it. So Cheesecake factory here we come....it is a holiday so I get to eat whatever I want .....right?

My kids are all grown in there early 20's but we still hide Easter eggs around the house....instead of candy we put $5, $10, and a $20 here and there in the eggs....talk about motivation ....

Oh and the Peeps....yuck....but my kids still love them.....

Run (in the gloomy rain) and swim today.................

David, good luck with your Dad's health.  Lost my Dad about a year and 1/2 ago and all I can say is make sure you enjoy the time you got!

IM-Moo finally got the volunteer website fixed, for those that were talking about volunteering earlier.  I signed up for a couple of shifts so "Queen" & Kim, I hope you are training hard, I will be seeing you on course!  (course attire still undecided!!)

Staring to look forward to REV3, I need a race in my life!  Have a happy Easter everybody.

I've used the running world plan calculator in the past and thought it was pretty good.  You put in a time from a previous race or run and it spits out a 16 or 20 week (I can't remember which) plan based on your predicted pace.

Scratch that, it seems that you have to pay for their plan creator now, which is a shame because I thought it was a pretty nice tool.

It was actually very similar to the plan that Suzy's running coach used when I had used him to get ready for Marine Corps Marathon a couple of years ago.  Which is another option if you're interested in the coached route.  He's coached a few current and past Mentor group members at this point I think.

I feel ya, Trevor!! Yesterday we had our 3rd day over 55 this year. Today it's supposed to be... (gasp!!!)... over 60!!! Can't get out and ride long, wah, but at least the Little League game will be much more pleasant. I'll have to slather myself in sunscreen -- I might melt!!! At least the rain is coming back to restore equilibrium, ha!

DJ, welcome to my world. I come home from rides with spit all over myself. On my legs, my shoulders... it's just par for the course. I'm usually better when I run but some days the spit doesn't quite make it to the ground. Such a glamorous sport we participate in, huh?

David--if you are interested in a very reasonably priced coach, check out 2lcoaching.com and Lowell Ladd.  He got me my BQ as well as Chet and Kim's cousin.  Very good at what he does--he's a runner, not a triathlete which is why I left him a few years back.  He just ran a marathon himself and won with an impressive 2:32 at the age of 35.  Not that you need to be a good runner to be a good coach, but it looks good on paper .  He's in Phillie, but works with nearly all of his athletes online.  It's his full time profession.

I'll join the miserable conditions bandwagon. Started my run at 5:15 and it was 41 degrees. Wind was in the mid teens which is OK compared to some other days of late. Mile 7 is when the real suck stated as the rain started coming down. Nothing like cold rain. I'd rather it snow. Anyway finished my 9.6 and on the upside recovery week is over!

It's Wednesday! Who's making history this weekend by toeing the line?  The scoop is required!

For the rest of us, what's the most important thing you do to stay healthy? why do you think it works?

No racing this week but I've got my first Oly next weekend....

Any good advice for getting through your first olympic tri and enjoying it???

I've done a couple of sprint tris earlier this year so I've got a vague idea but I'm not sure about pacing, hydration, gels etc.

Thanks, David

PS Best advice for keeping healthy: making exercise part of your daily routine and keeping your weight at the right level

Hey David,  I'm responding as I am catching up on pages, so this may have been covered already.  Olympics are tricky races because they require balls to the wall effort for a long time.  On sprints you go hard but they are short, halves are long enough that you get to slow down and pace yourself, but with the olympics you have to go hard the whole time.  I've learned that people either love them or hate them for this reason.  I really enjoy this distance.  Don't over do it on your nutrition or you'll pay for it later.  Stick with what has been working for you during training.  One little piece of advise that helps me is to make sure your nutrition is solid on the bike and then you don't need much for the run.  If you are cranking nutrition on the run than something was lacking on the bike.  Also, don't fry yourself on the bike.  At this distance the fast runners win the race so save your legs.  Try and keep your cadence high and especially on the last few miles you'll want to gear down and spin up to get the legs ready for the run.  Don't worry about what everyone else is doing and have a great time.  Olympics are a great challenge and you'll feel super proud of yourself as you cross that finish line.
