Couple of random questions for everyone...

1) I'm planning on using a Garmin 500 for the bike and a 310xt for the run since my 310xt has a bad habit of shutting down at 30% power occasionally.  I figure it’s better to be safe and bring both.  Do you think it will be ok to leave the 500 on the bike after the ride or should I take it off and leave it in my T2 bag with my helmet?

2) I know we aren’t allowed to start the bike with our shoes pre-clipped in but are we allowed to leave our bike shoes clipped on the bike after the ride as we enter T2?

3) Last one I promise!!!  For those who have done this race before... any insight on where to line up at the start? I'd rather not be on the inside when it comes time to turn around but looks like there is a part of the wall that jets out a few hundred yards into the swim which could create a bottle neck for those starting near the wall??? (Hope that makes sense)

From  Mike Ricci's recent article on the importance of bricks here on BT...

Full iron distance race simulation example

An example of an iron distance race simulation might be a 4,200 yard workout with 20x200 or 10x400 as the main set. It doesn’t have to be too fast or too hard, remember it’s a long day! Then onto the bike you go while riding around 110-120 miles with a few half iron distance efforts during the ride. Getting off the bike you would be running 8-10 miles and working on your iron distance pace. No need to crush it and no need to do anything but iron distance pace and take in the same calories you’d be taking in as on race day.

Anyone have a workout like this planned?  My Fink Intermediate Plan really has no brick workouts to speak of.  I'm thinking of coming up with one like this in the next few weeks.  And how important or not important is a workout like this in your IM ramp up?

Thanks

I have done one IM before - last year's AZ.  I did ok - 14:45, but did not do a lot of running as part of my training.  last weekend I did a 100 mile ride and 15 mile run.   run was at a 9:30 pace because I was running with a friend, the ride was finished in 5:28.   I took the entire day and I had a big swim 'race' the next day.  mentally, by the time I got to the swim next morning, I didn't have anything left - but swimming is my kyrptonite anyway.  I do hope to knock two hours off my time from last year so i will let you know on the 18th if the long brick is of any use.  :-)

Just a thought.  I volunteered at IMTX this year - my job was reconnecting all the special needs and transition bags with the bikes while the racers were out on the run.  some of the bags were pretty nasty with urine leaking out of them from the very soaked clothes.  to that end, even if you don't get nasty on your own stuff, remember, everything gets picked up and put in big barrels to transport back to the transition area.  --- there are just some things you may not want back.  I have a friend whose mantra is, make all your warm clothing throw away stuff that way you can drop it at any time during the bike or run and not care, and even if you know where it is, you are happy to kiss it good bye.

I have a couple of "race sim" days in my program.  The first was about five (5) weeks ago, and unfortunately after a 3K swim, I was 25 miles into a bike (along IM AZ course) when I wrecked, thus ending my day.  I have recovered and have one more race sim in 3 weeks, with a 3K swim followed by a 112 mi bike (the entire IM AZ course), and a 17 mi run (2 IM AZ run loops).  As the example stated, I will not hold IM pace the whole time, but add in short IM sprints, and instead make sure my endurance holds for the big day.

Sweet, they got it right, I'm bib #1 this year.  OK, maybe not...

1609.  I was feeling lazy today, went short on my swim, maybe this is the motivation I needed to get out and finish what I started.

(Hope that makes sense)

1.  Out of sight, out of mind is my opinion.  It is probably safe to leave it on the bike, but if you instead stuff it in your shoes in your T2 bag, it is less out in the open and less likely to disappear.

2.  If I recall correctly you cannot leave your bike shoes clipped in when you dismount.  I left mine on and took them off in T2, so I could be wrong.

3.  Cut the swim start into 4 quadrants.  #1 is inside left (along the buoy line) - this is where the fastest swimmers will typically line up.  #2 is front right (along the shoreline, or retaining wall) - the second fastest swimmers typically line up here to stay in front.  #3 is back left, behind the speedsters, and #4 is back right, along the dock and behind #2.  I was in #2 last year, and had to adjust my route a little as I ran right up towards one of the docks further down the shoreline.  SO.....if you wanted to avoid this, I would recommend quadrant #3, as you will be along the buoys but behind the fastest swimmers.  Either way, the start is chaos and you will have to enter the scrum at some point.

1576!

By the way, do we know anything about the pro lineup (without browsing all 400 pages of participant list)?  I imagine most of the greats will still be chillaxin after Kona...just wanna know so I can offer anyone with a single digit bib # personalized words of encouragement as I pass them on the run...

I saw a frequent BT poster/pro on there, Thomas Gerlach.
