Champion 6107 Out running or enjoying a fine glass of red... | Subject: RE: DOWN for the Holidays! StartingToTri - 2012-11-28 7:58 AM I'm excited: for the first time since about May (which is about a month after my weight started ballooning), I'm back in the 140's. Yes - just barely - but still. Feels good. I expect that the 150's still might make another appearance, but this has really been good incentive to keep up with the healthy eating. YEAH! Way to go! |

Champion 6107 Out running or enjoying a fine glass of red... | Subject: RE: DOWN for the Holidays! Uh oh. I ate fast food today. Fast food is definitely my downfall. I can live without sweets. I don't care much about breads. But throw a burger and fries in front of me, and I am helpless. I've been very very good - even ordering a salad w/ grilled chicken & no dressing when I go to Chic Fil A with the kids - but today I had a whopper & sweet potato fries (that makes them healthy, no?) & a diet coke (even though I've basically given them up). I was out shopping (which I hate more than anything in the world) and didn't have food handy. And more than that, I was ticked off to be shopping - so I self-soothed with Burger King. Stoopid. Stoopid. Stoopid. OK, enough remorse. I will eat a healthy snack in a minute (greek yogurt), drink my water, and have a healthy dinner that I put in the crockpot last night (paleo turkey meatballs). |

Question for those of you with kids.....as you change your nutrition (I hate the word "diet"), do you make changes to what your kids are eating as well? Do you talk to them about nutrition? This weekend I had a chat with my 10-year old niece about health/nutrition and I asked her if they talk about health/nutrition in school. She said "Are you kidding? We have the Dippin Dots (this is kinda like ice cream for those who don't know) truck come to school every Thursday as a school fund-raiser!" I realize schools are way under-funded, especially here in CA (and my brother lives in a GOOD district) but this is just sad. |

We talk to our kids about trying to make good choices and knowing what's questionable. Also we talk to them about the effects of sugar or too much sugar. We know that they are listening. Just last night, our oldest said she had a "good" lunch yesterday. She found out if they get "X" number of things they don't have to get the main course. When asked what she had, she said she got carrots, broccoli, an orange and something else that I forget right now. What is funny is the main course that day was pizza and that is usually one of her favorites. |

Champion 6107 Out running or enjoying a fine glass of red... | Subject: RE: DOWN for the Holidays! My kids eat what I eat - although since I've started eating a little more paleo-ish, I drop in the grain for them. For example, last night was paleo turkey meatballs - I served theirs over spaghetti (whole grain). They're both very active (one soccer, one dance/gymnastics) and so we talk about how food = fuel. We also are very strict on sweets - one or two piece of Halloween candy a day, so long as you eat a good dinner. Halloween candy usually lasts until May or June. They know that too much sugar is bad for them and that it isn't good fuel. Sugar is a treat; real food is fuel. I think they understand this - they know they need to eat before they practice, etc. so it really does seem like fuel. The Dippin' Dots thing is crack. I think that is terrible. And weird. But mostly terrible. Around here they're trying to get the crap out of school...not encourage it. |

Their mom fed them a lot of pre-made food and general crap. We went for lots of veggies and fresh food (still do) and variety. It was an uphill battle but it needed to be done. Proud to say both kids are on their own and make really good choices (for the most part) AND are fit and active. |

in a round-about way, i havent had any soda for over a year now. one of the hardest things i had to do. i got crabby, head aches ect..... so not having it they dont drink it as much, i basically only drink water for thurst. maybe some juice now and then. stopped buying all the snacks, so they dont have it at hand to eat, not that they dont, its just not easy watching tv and grabbing a bag of chips or bowl of ice cream. |

Anyway, I have been getting a box of organic produce delivered to my place and this week I got an acorn squash. We've always limited their intake of "junk". Since January when I started to eat better we have improved on the diet even further. Substituting a lot more vegetables for processed carb loaded dishes. I like my veggies simple, raw or steamed, and untouched and so I'm working to get them there to. We talk a lot more these days about healthy living and family health history etc. As an aside since getting in much better shape I have noticed something that never stuck out to me before. This nation as a whole is getting soft....mostly around the midsection. I honestly never paid much attention to it before but people are just getting way out of shape, and their kids are doing the same thing. I see pictures of my friends "husky" kids on facebook or something like that where they are just crushing some donuts or cupcakes or whatever and pounding cokes 2 or 3 times a day....it just baffles me how they are handicapping their own kids like that. |

Royal(PITA) 14270 West Chester, Ohio | Subject: RE: DOWN for the Holidays! Abbie, I have always heard that shildren are "born" with a particular palate taste. I have an old freind with 3 kids, the oldest would take 1 piece of candy if offered to take from a bag. Her son would eat the contents of the bag if not limited when offered. I don't know how much of that is the personality difference in her 2 older kids vs "palate" (her husband is a chef, these kids learned to like LOTS of food) I keep healthier snacks around, with a mixture of not so healthy stuff......I try to steer them towards the fruits and veggies. But I am dealing with teenagers who think they are invincible. When I lost the majority of my weight (8 + years ago) we didn't change their snacks. We just switched over to the whole grain bread and pasta, brown rice. They are okay with that, in fact my oldest doesn't like white bread or pasta.....or white rice. The younger one is a carb-oholic and eith our family history of diabetes on both sides will likely beocome a diabetic . It is a hard balancing act. They should have the occasional treat as kids....but when there are such bad risk factors and genetics playing into disease potential the families *should* be more proactive to prevent the potential. Unfortunately.....a vast majority of our socciety does little / nothing to mitigate personal healrh risks for themselves OR their kids. |
