Go get 'em Roni!!!!!!  8 hours of running, ugh Cry  You are such a studdette!

I hear you about the snow.  In North Carolina they shut down with a prediction of snow - whimps.  But I won't complain about the extra time off that's for sure.

So John, I guess wool arm warmers and cold gear Under Armour are off my list of gifts for you for x-mas?  Guess I'll go to the fallback plan of a lifesize nude cutout.  Keeping it simple.

SWEET!!!

I have a question for the group, especially for those of you who have lost weight while training/racing. I am actively trying to lose weight again and it is going really well, but I'm a little unsure how to handle the few days leading up to the race. I want to have the fuel and energy to be able to race well, but I also don't want to gain back the couple pounds I've lost in the last week.  So, do I continue to limit my calories, increase them a little, or what? What effect does this have on race day. This has been a big struggle for me and is part of what has led me to gain back some of the weight I lost before training for endurance events. In the past, I have just eaten with abandon in the days leading up to a race, and while I have had no issues with bonking, this tactic is clearly not working for me in the long term. Love to hear your thoughts!

Thanks Tracy! Hopefully, I won't be out there near that long. OK, so I guess I have a little bit of a time in mind

all ya'll - love all the snow stories!

My 2 cents is that you don't worry about your weight (gain or loss) over this whole weekend... maybe not even for a few days post race either.

You're going to burn a couple calories on a 50k run, no doubt.  But if you try to limit your food intake right now then you'll lose out on the necessary nutrition that your body is going to need during the race.  You'll also need the proteins and carbs post race to limit the amount of muscle loss and/or damage.

I don't have to tell you that you're going to do an endurance event.  You don't want to crash during the race.  Carb load (whole grain / complex carbs) 2 nights before the race and go easy on carbs the day before.  You will burn off most of the excess and glycogen stores in 30 miles.  So don't sweat a little weight.

Even if you do put on a few pounds over the next week, take the time to recover properly and then jump back on the weight loss wagon.  Your body will thank you for taking care of it.

I think Jeremy said it pretty well - don't fret too much, you should burn like 5k cal on the run...  Most of the fluctuation in weight will be water anyway.

Oh yeah - GOOD LUCK!!!  and most importantly - HAVE FUN!!!

Remember to be careful.  Don't change anything from your routine!  If you have been training w/ XYZ, then race w/ XYZ!  I would say not too worry about weight, but I wouldn't go overboard with the food intake.  You don't want the feeling that people feel post Thanksgiving dinner... Weighted down, no energy, and feeling like puking!  Stick w/ what you know, and how you feel!  Jeremy is right about carbo loading.    There will (or should be) a pretty substantial amount of food on the course so if you are feeling depleted (sp?) on the course you can suck some calories down out there.  Are you running w/ a bottle, or a camelback?  Stash some SOLID foods in there!  Remember this.... IT is "ONLY" 4.86 miles further than all the marathons you have done!  PIECE OF CAKE!!!!  Remember at mile 22---Your now in the single digits!  only 9, 8, 7, etc miles to go!  EASY CHEESY!!! Please ask the DH (or whoever will be your jockstrap) to take lots of pictures!!!

Hey everyone. I posted this in the NC foru, but thought I would share it here. There is a new event in NC this year. The American Tripe-T, which started in Ohio is coming to White Lake, NC October 8-10. Its 4 triathlons, 140+ miles, in three days. You can compete as an individual or a two person team. Friday afternoon is a super sprint, then Saturday is two (2) Olympics, followed by a Half Iron on Sunday!

It sound like a lot of fun and would be cool to do as a team. Unfortunately for me I am doing Augusta 1/2 IM 9/26/10 and will not be recovered enough to do this event this year.  Frown Maybe next year. Laughing

Maybe a Swmbkrun MG event for '11!

The SRAM TT900 is the way to go!  I just went TT900 on the Brakes, and TT500 on the shifters, the go w/ the S975 SRM Powermeter Crank.....

The Dura Ace is strictly for show!

Roni--- GO GET EM!  Have a great adventure!  Enjoy SUNRIVER!!!  One of my favorite places... They do a race there every year (called Pacific Crest Endurance Weekend)... I will be going down to do the 1/2 Iron next year!  LOVE IT DOWN THERE!!!

Seriously? that electronic group set is a fortune compared to the regular one...are you kidding me or you have it and love it?  My bike guy is not a fan of SRAM so why do you like the shifter?  Picking out this stuff makes me feel really inadequate...I know nothing.  He also wants to mix Shimano with Campie...heresy?

Suzy:

What is your bike guys reason for mixing up campy and DA? I rode campy in the 70's and early 80's. It was the cream of the crop back then. My Road bike is all DA and I really love it. My Tri Bike is SRAm. It is lighter. I wish I had the return to center shifters. Other than than that I love the stuff. The deraillers are a dream and easy to adjust. The only complaint I have is the noise when I apply the brakes hard, but I think I just need to tow the brakes more.

I respect campagnolo, but they really are not the leaders in technology they once were. As to electronic gears, I am not an early adopter. I would rather see them in competition for a couple of years, see a few companies vie for market share and hopefully see prices fall.

Hope this helps. I am curius as to your guy's answer/reasoning.

Mixing Shimano and Campy?  Not sure about that one!  As for the SRAM stuff, I really like how the shifter's feel.  When I am down in aero it is nice smooth shifting.  A little wider shifter as well.  Easy to reach.  For the brakes it seems as though they are a tad bigger than the profile design I was using prior to this.

The electronic shifters..... Just joking- A novelty if you ask me?!  Columbia High Road Racing used them at the Tour this year, but not many others have....

Honestly I was thinking of the same thing.  My 3 y/o would love it because it would be like 'what daddy wears' when I run.  But for the times when we're out in public... not to sound overprotective, but you just need to be careful.

I like the idea.

New work digs sure takes away from posting on here!!

Roni I wouldn't worry about a few extra lbs. Like everyone else said, you'll probably burn a few calories going 50k. I hear you though on the weight issue. Sometimes I think its hard to practice endurance sports and try to lose weight at the same time. Its about Fuel.

Andy- look back a few pages. Tracy was talking about the RoadIDs for her girls.

I don't think anyone has said it yet so I will - Nice Avatar John!

Roni--the team has summed it up very well.  You will regret messing around with calories before a long distance race.  I would also second the idea of calorie reduction for the week after the race. Your immune system will be depleted and your recovery will slow if you do not eat well....well to me is an alkaline diet to include lots of fruits, vegetables and lean proteins.  Start calorie counting a week afterwards. Your body will thank you.

Doug-I think he was talking about the crank, but I will ask him when he is here tomorrow.  He is very picky about product quality and dismisses a lot of the popular brands (e.g. zipp wheels, profile aerobars) based on the materials that are used in production.  He is also aware of my size and how it limits some purchases that others take for granted.  I usually get suggestions from people like you or Steve and then we talk through them.  That is my intent tomorrow.

Trevor--you are way behind...I gave John high fives on the avatar privately!

I have two Road IDs. one that goes around my ankle and one that can be slipped onto shoe laces.  I am not as diligent about wearing them as I should be, but I do think they are useful, especially if you have a malady that people need to know about like me.

Sorry, I went x-mas shopping over lunch.  Okay, RoadID.   I bought the size small wrist bands and they should fit around their ankles.  I thought they would be good beyond riding - for example.  Tony and Sam at Disney. I would have my girls wear their ID's for safety reasons at a place like that. Then I don't have to worry about them forgetting thier info.

Thanks for the input on race nutrition! I feel pretty comfortable with race day; I'll be using my amphipod with infinit, and carry some dried fruit/pretzel mix. I won't worry about calories that day at all, as I know I will burn off plenty during the run. The days leading up to race day are a little more difficult for me though. My body is an expert in fat storage and I can easily gain 5 lbs in a few days of mindless eating. Unfortunately, I have used the "don't worry about weight" as an excuse to binge in the past. I guess the key is finding balance; don't limit my calories, but also don't stuff myself (as Steve said "the after Thanksgiving feeling").

Steve- My DH is running too and we don't have anyone else coming, so pics will be a little difficult. We'll try to get some before and afters. BTW- Pacific Crest is on my "to do" list, unfortunately this year it's on the same day as IMCDA.

As to the above-statement, beware that the "materials" change from year-to-year and model-to-model depending on the part. When he dislikes a part/brand/model, how much data is that based on? His personal experience? If so how many failure/problems per total number of units? If on data from others then where is it coming from?

I am not saying he does not know what he is talking about, but rather I am leary of broad statements like that. When I give you my opinion it is based on my own (limited) experience, otherwise I will preface it with "I have heard..."

Tiger Woods is so rich that he owns lots of expensive cars. Now he has a hole in one.

Q.Why was Tiger in such a hurry at 2:30?

A. He was late getting to the next hole.
