Went for a 50mile bike ride in Glacier National Park Saturday, elevation gain of 4301 ft. The scenery was beautiful and I was really impressed by how well my tri bike handled the long uphill and a section of dirt and gravel road. It was slow going for awhile, but that was me not the bike Thing is I've done this ride for the past 3 seasons when they have the road closed to cars. First time (before I started training for tris) I had to stop more times than I can count and only made it up about 2000ft elevation. Last year I stopped a couple times on the way up, but I didn't really need to until about 3500 ft when I couldn't go anymore. This year I didn't stop until the drift made me and could have kept going. It was alot of work but very doable. Now I just need to work on keeping a good pace up that sucker Here's a pic at the top. There's more in my albums if you want to see them. It's a beautiful ride!

I got an open water swim done this weekend.  It was a lot of work.  I got terribly sunburned too.  I really need to find some sunscreen that really does stay on in the water!

I'm getting nervous about the big race!  It seems as if I have come down with all sorts of aches and pains all over my body.  I think it's stress.  I'm also trying to get lots of work done before we head out of town.  I'll be heading to the lagoon again this weekend for another OWS and wetsuit removal practice.  I'll also go for a leisurly ride.  The running is at a minimum right now since my shins hurt so bad.  Those suckers have got to heal.  I hope everyone else is doing good.  Cheers!

Tracy, are you icing your shins after every workout? Taking anti-inflammatories?

I've got a 4 mile race coming up on Monday morning. I've been doing the distance off and on for a while so that's not an issue. It will all come down to how my legs are feeling during the run and how hard I can push it.

The race is through the local Road Runners club, as part of their "low key" race series. All registration is done there on the day of the race ($5). I wasn't even sure there'd be race numbers, but I just found some pictures from last year and there are. I don't know if they do age groups, awards, etc.

Do you have orthotics? The only other option is rest, and we all know that's not going to happen right now!

I'm resting as best I can right now.  I'm doing a little bike ride and OWS this weekend.  I don't have orthotics.  I've never had problems until recently.  Not sure what's going on.  I've been running MUCH less distance than I have in the past.

Any plans for the Memorial weekend?  I'm sticking around home.  Maybe do a little yardwork.  Nothing to strenuous, though.

40 mile ride scheduled for tomorrow and my race on Monday. Otherwise taking it easy at home.

The water temperature at Boise 70.3 is projected to be in the mid 50's!  They are allowing booties and gloves and neoprene caps.  Should be interesting.  I felt fine in my sleeveless wetsuit last year at Pacific Crest in 63 degree water.  I should be ok with a little mental prep.

I was up early today for my 4 mile race. It was put on by the county Road Runner's club as part of their "low key" race series. There were at least 230 runners.

My pace was just insane! I've never run that fast over this distance. A PB for sure!

I looked down at my watch about half way into the first mile and it showed a sub 8min pace; I couldn't believe it, but my legs kept it going. I kept wondering when the wheels would fall off. I guess it started in the third mile. The last, ALL UPHILL mile was just about trying to bring it home. That was hard!

Everyone was crazy fast; I didn't pass a single person!

  • Final time: 36:24
  • Pace: 9:04/mile
  • Finish position: 171

I don't know if they will post age group results.

Good fun!

I did another open water swim today!  I'm glad I did it, too!  The water temp was about 55 degrees!  (Air temp was about 55 degrees, too!)  I tried some neoprene booties with my sleeveless wetsuit, silicone swim cap covered by a standard rubber cap, and silicone ear plugs.  I didn't wear gloves since my shoulders are prone to injury.  I didn't want to risk it this close to the race.  After a little while, I threw the booties into Brett's kayak and swam with naked feet.  They were creating to much drag and wearing me out.  I was in the water for a total of 30 minutes but I only swam freestyle for a short bit of that time.  I'm glad I did it.  Now I know how I'm going to feel at Boise in that cold of water.

No worries regarding water clarity!   The lagoon I swim in is really, I repeat, REALLY murky!  I forgot to mention in my last post one little detail.  Brett said I missed one hella huge trout/steelhead jump clear out of the water just in front of me while I was doing some freestyle today!  He told me that my pink swim cap must have scared it!  Hee hee!  I wish I could have seen it!

Nice job on the OWS Tracy! You've confirmed my feelings about the booties too, which will save me the money of trying them. I hate swimming with something on my feet (unless they were fins ), but I'm not sure what to do about the run into the lake. I did an OWS over the weekend in the lake my tri will be in and I was warm enough with my full wetsuit, but I'm a little worried about all the rocks since it's a beach start. The lake has a lot of really jagged sharp rocks that were painful just to walk in with, I can't imagine running over them. Any advice?

water is really clear here Shaun of course it's also really cold. There is a lake about 40minutes from me that you can see the bottom even at a depth of about 30 feet. It's really cool, but never gets above about 65 degrees and is usually much colder.

So what's on schedule for everyone? I'm heading to the gym for a swim and then hitting the road for Grand Coulee until Thursday. I'm going to stop in Spokane along the way at my favorite sushi place for my bday dinner. Turning 38 today, and I feel better than I did at 28! woohoo!!!!
