ChrisM - 2009-11-02 1:28 PM Sax, if you want a local comparison, ride San Vicente from Ocean up to 22d or so.  The Beeline is longer, but that's about the grade.

As for cassettes, I ride the same routes as Sax and rode a 12-27.   Not sure which gears I used, or whether a 12-23 would have sufficed.  It's all a trade off, check and see which gears you lose with the 12-23, and determine whether you'd miss them with the 12-27.

As an aside, my entirely unscientific and based on one IM opinion is I'd rather have gears and not need them than need gears I don't have.  I think jeepfleeb ran a 12-27 on IMAZ when he did it.
Very true, Chris. IF it's windy enough that it's a grind going north, the tail wind going south needs to be considered so you don't spin out. I don't think a lot of folks would spin out using a 12.

I certainly didn't

bryancd - 2009-11-02 2:23 PM  And using the April '08 race is a bad example as the wind that day was SO bad. That wind would have made a flat course a very difficult. We are not likely to have winds liek that in Nov.

LOL! I was standing at the turn around cheering you all on and a gust hit so bad it blew the timing mat up in the air! That day was such an wierd one for weather and it was approproate it was the last April IMAZ as it had all the things that made April a tough date: wind and heat. I think you experience with the hill will be very different this year and you'll get the last laugh!

I'm a late joiner to the party, but am happy to have stumbled upon this resource.  Better late than never.  Two questions I was hoping someone could shed some light on that I didn't see in the last 45 pages of posts (although I may have missed it):

1) What type of bottles are used for the water and gatorade on the bike course?  Are they sports bottles that have a squirt top or are they the normal twist off caps?  Trying to decide whether to use the aero bottle or my aero bar mounted cage.

2) Is it is a mistake not to stay at a hotel in Tempe?  I have a reservation at the host hotel but there are some nice deals a little farther away in Scottsdale but I'm wondering how much of a hassle it will be driving in on race morning.  I have a bunch of family traveling with me so I can have someone drop me off on race morning and won't have to worry about parking.

Thanks in advance.  Hope everyone is enjoying their taper!

When onsite last year volunteering we had no problems with parking. That said, we are staying at the host hotel despite the cost so that it's an easy walk back and forth from the venue for the family. Gonna be a long day and for the wife, kids, and my parents it will be more convienent for them to be able to come and go throughout the day.

I'm staying at our house in Scottsdale - maybe 15 minutes away from the race site but I think I'll actually be happy to get away from the madness. Still plenty close to get over there when needed. My family won't leave during the day to go back to their hotel but downtown Tempe has so much to do, eat, etc that they can amuse themselves shopping and eating in between athlete sightings.

Officially kicked off the taper today and I'm glad it's finally here! Tomorrow I load the car up and the dogs and I head south to Arizona!

They are sport bottles with the squirt top. The volunteers will remove the paper cover over the bottle and cellophane top, so when you get it, it's ready to drink.

From an earlier post someone had suggested starting the bike segment with one of the same type sport bottles. That way you can jettison it at the aid station, get a new one from the volunteer and repeat as needed. That's going to be my plan. 3 bottles of 2x infinit and one course water bottle swapped at aid stations as needed.

Was going to clarify, they are sport bottles, but not bike bottles as some IMs (at least) used to do.   The water bottles did not fit well into my bts cages, had to jimmy together some tape to keep them from falling out backwards

I've been brushing up on drafting and passing rules this week. After seeing so many drafting calls made in Kona I need some clarification with IMAZ being a 3 loop course and there being a larger potential for drafting to be an issue.

If I am in the process of passing another racer and they speed up to keep me from passing could I get called for a failed pass or drafting? I believe Keat was called on something similar in Kona and I'm looking for clarification.

Yes, if you start to pass you have to finish it, cannot drop back.  If not it's drafting.

Yes is true, however if you are being passed, you need to drop back, if not you might have a penalty for blocking.. So if you are going to pass somebody you ahve to complete the pass.. If you are being passed as soon as you see the paser, you must drop back and let him/her pass you. You can pass him/her later and he/she must drop as well.
That is a big issue for women pro, many good age groupers catch up to them and they are constantly being passed and dropping back because those are the rules..

While racing this summer I found myself in a situation where I was passing a racer. I had nearly completed the pass and was getting ready to merge back to the right when the racer took off and repassed me (on the right). There were no draft marshalls at this point but it was my understanding that he was in the wrong as he should have dropped back and then repassed me.

Not when you "see" them but when thier front wheel overtakes your front wheel, you are required to drop back.

October's totals:
Bike:36h 40m 33s  - 685.76 Mi
Run:19h 46m 11s  - 137.81 Mi
Swim:12h 00m 08s  - 35756 M

Not too bad considering I actually started tapering for IMFL!

I hope I am reading this correct... are these totals from Day One of training until the end of October, or are these totals just for just the MONTH of October?  I'm hoping its total from day one, or I am in trouble.

Hey,  don't worry about it..   remember,  this is a personal thing and we all are different.   I learned this and I don't look at other people's volumes anymore.  I just do what feels right...   So, don't sweat it... you will be fine.    We are stronger than we think we are..    really,  I know!!

Why are you kidding with me, I actually started to believe you for a second. There's no way you guys are averaging 137 mil of running in ONE month. (that would be a marathon a week and then some)

i was thinking i hadn't run enough at 155 miles in october. this is an ironman and this was our last build month.

im serious. this is a serious event. you need to be prepared (or you will potentially suffer badly). we aren't joking with you.

volume is important but you may not need that much given your foundation.

No kidding--check my logs, and I've had higher months than that...if you do a 18-20 mile long run on a weekend, and a couple o 6-10 milers during the week, it adds up.  I'm at something like 1175 miles for the year...

Everyone is different, and their bodies are capable of doing different things, but for long course Ironman training, I don't think my numbers are anywhere in the realm of being "high"....my goal is to go race it as hard and fast as I can--yes, "finish" is the goal (it is my first IM) but really, "race strong" is the plan---my personality is to be as prepared  and competitive as possible, and thus I've trained hard.  Life has often got in the way and I haven't even done everything I was scheduled to do--but that is tailored for my personal goals AND my capabilities.
