David:

Congratulations on the baby!!! Awesome. Now your training will get thrown even more out of wack.  Believe me, with two toddlers and a five month old, I'm trying to figure out time to run and bike w/o neglecting my daddy duties. But it's so worth it, despite being sleep deprived.

Congratulations again, and don't beat yourself up if you can't train.  This is just a season which will pass.

Jeff

Thanks EVERYONE for your support!  It was a great day!!

So much to say!  My parents are in town so I am spending as much time as I can with them before they leave tomorrow.  Working on a race report...

Very, very impressive. Congrats!

Congrats on an awesome race, Rene!!!  Great times all the way through!  I am looking forward to the RR.

Sorry, I have been so MIA lately.  I'm still running and building toward a consistent 5K.  I finally bought a bike today and am looking forward to my first ride tomorrow.  And last, but certainly not least, I became a dad over the weekend.    Life is good!

Congratulations, David!!  Life is indeed good.  You will get so much joy and inspiration from your kids.  Heck, my 8-year-old daughter completed her first triathlon the day before I did!

That is awesome!  Good stuff!

Great race, Rene!  That gator pic is crazy.  Gator bites can interfere with your training!

Hello everyone!  Hope you are all enjoying the long weekend! Ours ends this evening - back to work tomorrow.

I went north to the site of the race and attempted to ride the bike course - I am a navigational nightmare!!!  I basically rode half the course in the wrong direction :S  Was pretty annoyed about that as I don't think I'll have another opportunity to go up and I couldn't do it today.  But they say the first and last portion are the worst and so I did the last bit yesterday and the first/last 10km today.   Hopefully the middle is undulating   What I do know is that it was freaking hilly and my legs were SO TIRED.  But I think I know of some hills in the area that I can use to simulate the ride on the weekend so that's good.

I do have a question - when I look at the bike volume in the plan it seems to start to decrease from this point onwards - there are two more weeks of solid bike but then the volumes are lower.  I kind of like my longer rides now that I have the volume base built and so I'm wondering - when it calls for a 2.5 hour ride on a flat to rolling course - knowing my race is a hilly beast - should I do 2.5 hours hilly?  Or can I go long with a ride that simulates race terrain?  What are your thoughts?

Hi Chava - I think the goal is to increase your volume by 10% each week with a recovery week every 4 weeks.  Otherwise you may risk injury.  I've done spurts that are higher % but it is tough on your body.  Listen to your body, how long it takes to recover and you should be able to gauge what is a good amount of increase.

Bumped into Bobby this morning at a local 5k/1miler running w/his kids and wouldn't you know it? Speed runs in the family, his son took first overall in his age group. Go figure

Congrats!

Hills will make you stronger rider. I would tailor the plan to match your event.  Therefore go with the hills.

Bobby & George!

The clock is ticking!!  :-)  Some MAJOR building is going on!  Remember this...

"I don't expect success, I train for it. "

Everything you do now affects how your race will go.  This your last weekend before the big taper?  Make it happen!!  Best of luck to both of you on this final push!!

YOU CAN DO THIS!!  YOU WILL DO THIS!!

Happy Friday Group.   Anyone racing?  Any big weekend training plans?

I'm gradually starting to taper for IMUSA.  Taking it pretty easy this weekend with probably just shy of 5 hours of EZ SBR.  My last real workout will be Tuesday when I go up to Harriman State Park one last time for some short, but fun climbing.  And then it's TRUE TAPER time for 12 crazy days.

Rene - Awesome Race Report!!  So funny that I saw your OA time and splits, and I immediately thought that you had a nice smooth race.  Then I read your RR and I was shocked how many obstacles you had to overcome. Very inspiring.

hi everyone:

hope all had a great short week and looking forward to this weekend. It will be scorching hot in LA.

My next race is in Sept LA Tri so I'm gearing up for that, it's my "a" race of the year and in open (ocean) water.

I have a question, I have a tri swim workout book and part of the exercise is to get a T1 pace.

I'm doing the 3 x 300 test.  Can someone tell me how to do it?  I did it once but I'm not sure if coming out with the right result.

Thanks

I've never heard of the 3 x 300 test, just the T-pace test.  The T-pace test is to do a 98% all-out 1000 yard swim and record your results.  Your 100 yard pace is now your T-pace, and your swim workouts will be based on that pace, something like:

400 WU,  3 x 100 @ T-pace minus 5 10" rest, 3 x 200 @ T-pace plus 3 15" rest, 200 CD

Like everything else in tri training, there are a whole bunch of variables that affect your swim performance like time of day, amount of sleep, nutrition, etc., so it's just a guideline.

I'd hazard a guess that the 3 x 300 is something similar...just average 3 hard 300s with a few seconds rest in between.  That will probably wind up a little faster than "T-pace" but the point is to figure roughly where your LT is when swimming, which is pretty hard to do 'cause you can't wear a HRM.

3rd DNS in a row this weekend...good times, right?

Headed to NO CAL later this week for vacation...spending three days in Sonoma County, two in San Fran, and a couple down near San Jose.  We're going to do all the touristy crap...Alcatraz, Ride the Ducks, Fisherman's Wharf, and the Amusement Park Pier down in Santa Cruz.  We're taking our daughter...so is so stoked!!

Bobby, I can't wait to read your blogs during your taper...you're going to go NUTS.
