I am also very competitive with myself. And I train alone -- I like the alone time. If I were running or riding with someone, I would feel compelled to talk or chit chat. Wow, I sound really anti-social and introverted. :-( I feel the same way. And it's only anti-social and introverted if you are like that all the time, not just training. Ahhhh yes, well, you are both correct. When I train with people, I chit chat. A lot. As in AD, A-dizzle, Addy (or Salty or whatever they choose to call me that day) WON'T SHUT UP!
i like that! |

Member 892 England | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - FULL POD wushunut - 2012-04-19 8:20 PM The last time I barfed was during track practice in highschool where our coach/sadist imposed the "4min mile" workout on us. (I was a sprinter). I puked hard after practice, along with several of my team mates. It was miserable. I shudder to think about an effort like that again. If you're wondering what the 4min/mile workout is (good speed work), it's like golf where 4min is par. 800m warm-up Time yourself at an all out pace for 400m. That's your starting time. Then do intervals of 100m, 200m or whatever. Your total distance should be 1600m and total time should be 4 minutes or less. You jog one lap (400m) between intervals (this is your rest, which you don't count as part of your time or distance). So say you do your first 400m at 60seconds. Congratulations, you're at "par" That means if you elect to do 4x400 then each 400 has to be 60 seconds or less to stay at par. I hate that work out.
I do to and i haven't ever done one. |

Member 892 England | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - FULL POD Tripopo - 2012-04-19 8:28 PM Finished my class early enough that I was able to get my open water swim in, apparently it was field trip day at the county park at the beach I went to so I got some odd looks emerging from the changing rooms in full wetsuit. The weather sucks today (so 1100 was close to what I'm expecting/hoping for on saturday) but I rather enjoyed swimming with the wetsuit once I got used to it/figured out that if I let some water in through the neck I could breathe a bit easier. Although I need to work on my bilateral breathing, Had planned a 20 min swim ten min down the beach then back. When I could see the land my sighting was awesome and my speed was decent- not so much otherwise. My pace put me squarely in the 30-40 min range for a 1.2 mile swim. Hopefully I'll be on the smaller end of that as I will be able to sight off of my left side the whole time, that's my preferred side for breathing while swimming. Good luck on the TT today Keye, try to leave a little bit of yourself on the course! Prepping the race checklist tonight, fixing up the bike etc. Has anyone had a problem swimming in the desoto 400 mile shorts? Those are my planned shorts for the HIM but it is a fairly bulky pad. Any things I should look to make sure I have for race time? Besides the regular expo there is also a tent sale at the local tri-store down the street so I might be able to pick up some last minute things.
Allen I'm looking forward to racing with you just in different venues on saturday Good Luck and have FUN!!
ETA: My awesome spelling got me again! It's an honour to be running alongside someone doing a HIM. Have a great time and look forward to your race report. |

Lots of people swimming around and lots of pee in the water. Just like the real deal
Oh nononono, it is waaay too cold for Southerners to get in the water, especially in the rain, they were shell searching (or I secretly believe that the teachers were just letting them run so they'd calm down). It's odd even with mid-80's temps and sunny people just don't get in the water around here until May, it was cool but not uncomfortable and some surfers were out but not the childrens the looks I got were from the teachers/chaperones like I had lost my fool mind getting into the water... Something we all aspire to/ are working towards |

Elite 4435 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - FULL POD rrrunner - 2012-04-19 12:54 PM I like the structure of those swim plans! I usually get in and do 100 drill, 100 free, 100 another drill, 100 free etc because the coach I had (for 2 weeks in January) had us do it that way. Okay... what is sculling? I've heard it helps you "feel" the water. Is this something I can learn to do w/o a coach? You can see the scull drills on Youtube - definitely don't need a coach. |

Extreme Veteran 536 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - FULL POD I did it! I made myself go for a run when I wanted to come home and read on my deck, AND I had a really good workout! I think the bike interval work at my computrainer class plus the coached track workouts with my running club have really improved my speed in a short 3 1/2 months! I started out "easy", which is usually around 10:00 min/mile, but today it was 9:45. Then for my second mile I was running an average 9:15! That is so good for me! It's like last week, at track, I was shooting to do my 400m repeats at 2:15s, but each lap I came around and I was at 2:08. I said, well if the legs feel like running an 8:30 mile, who am I to stop them! Now I need to teach my body to maintain that pace, because I felt like I was going to puke a little (that lovely feeling when your stomach says "stop or I"ll..." fill in the blank as to what it threatens, lol). And honestly, I thought about all of my fellow manatees and all the killer workouts they've been logging, and that's what got my butt outside to log some miles today. Thank you for the inspiration!! |

I certainly wouldn't take it too hard getting passed by the guy who normally wins the thing! It's about you and your own progress anyway. I know...hard to think of it that way when you are competitive. Whatever though, 22.36 on tired legs is amazing! Every-day yer shufflin' Edited by Asalzwed 2012-04-19 11:08 PM |

You were passed by the guy that usually wins, probably wearing the TT outfit. And he probably didn't have tired legs. Nor did he swim that afternoon. Or run the day before. 22.36 mph on your road bike in the early season is a number I'd loooove to see. Heck, I'll take it at any time in the year Although I get the feeling that you did not lose your lunch, so there is that to work on. This is great, I now have a variety of goals: Swim like Jo, bike like Keye, run like Adrienne. If I ever hit one of these goals, I'll be smiling like a kid locked in a candy store! |

Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - FULL POD Brie - great job getting out there and getting a workout in even though the lure of the deck and a book tempted you. No, deck, no! Bad deck! Adrenne - that sounds like an awesome, fun, 'sick' day and that you and your mom had a very nice time. That is very important. wushunut - (sorry, your real name isn't coming to me) - super job on your TT! Like the others said, don't be ashamed of your results with tired legs and having done a swim earlier in the day. And like you said, now you have a reference point for yourself and now have a time to beat for the next time you do this later in the season, hopefully without the tired legs! Just having the courage to try a new challenge such as that is big in my book. We have one tough pod of manatees! Edited by melbo55 2012-04-20 7:09 AM |

We have a party at the house tomorrow with some friends, I'll be smoking a pork butt and shredding it up. Yum! And a long run on Sunday, from the church to home. And some pool time squeezed in there as well. I had an epiphany this morning while sitting at my desk avoiding work. I was going back through the calendar and trying to update some equipment when I noticed that times and speeds have changed since last year. And in a good way! WooHoo, this stuff seems to be moving in the right direction! What a great feeling. I was starting to feel like I had hit a wall and this just renewed my efforts. Now, if I can get my eating under control, I'll be quite happy. Ah, who am I kidding, I'm quite happy now. I'll be even happier when (not if) I get the food intake under control. |

One thing at a time, one thing at a time--congratulations on your amazing progress from last year to first, which I have had the tremendous joy of observing too. Building endurance (even what it means literally!) is a long-haul prospect, best viewed from a lens of year to year rather than where you're at right now, and, as always, seasoned with circumstance. I think I'd be quite happy to shuffle down the street and back right now ... I might. |
