Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm at 733 miles of running this year and 3088 miles on the bike. I'm pleased with how this season has gone. With a history of running injuries that have left me sidelined in the past I'm pleased to make it to taper healthy and uninjured (knock on wood). |

It may not look it, but I've focused a lot more on the bike (2289 LY) and less on the run (925 LY). |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm so disappointed with my run volume this year. I'm at 750 and that includes 2 injuries, not nearly what I was hoping for. Just read the article in this months Triathlete magazine about the IM run and I am feeling so undertrained for the run, and it's the part that hurts the most. I know there's nothing I can do now, just venting to those who kinda understand, LOl |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() phatknot - 2009-11-03 12:19 PM i was thinking i hadn't run enough at 155 miles in october. this is an ironman and this was our last build month. im serious. this is a serious event. you need to be prepared (or you will potentially suffer badly). we aren't joking with you. volume is important but you may not need that much given your foundation. Come on don't scare the $hit out of us.... There are two things that will kill anybody's race... Nutrition and Pacing. I have known people that have been able to FINISH an IM with minimal training, FAR below what most of us have done here. It is better to go under trained than over trained and with big expectations of yourself, specially if this is your FIRST IM. As I said somewhere, we are stronger than we think we are.. So if your goal is to finish, don't worry about it. Just go and have fun and I am sure you will finish, we all are if we don't make mistakes in pacing and nutrition. Take care of your feet (blisters are not fun), and enjoy the day. Edited by velasqu7 2009-11-03 5:52 PM |

I learned this and I don't look at other people's volumes anymore. I just do what feels right... So, don't sweat it... you will be fine. We are stronger than we think we are.. really, I know!! I am at 1460.05 for the year... anybody else? LOL! You posted not to worry and compare volume and then ask what everyones volume is! Mine is 1331.48 Miles not that it matters. ![]() Sally, you will be fine on the run. Yes, it gets very hard but you have great run fitness and speed already, you are going to be fine. ![]() Avoid a lot of the "Noise". Edited by bryancd 2009-11-03 6:04 PM |

Run Less Run Fast (FIRST) is a marathon etc running program about intensity not volume. I followed that for my first mary and did great on <40 miles a week and many weeks <35/30. |

Running is only one of three events in the IM, if you see my swim and my bike volumes, those are laughable compared to some of you... I do make fun of myself all the time... ![]() |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I will be honest. I see high volume and wonder if I'll be ready, then I think back to my training and my plan. I trust my plan and my prep. I have a race plan and am sticking to it, this has helped me stay grounded and somewhat calm in these last few weeks. I would guess that some of us are a little nervous and seeing posted volume from others doing the same race can cause us to second guess our own training program. Each of us has our own plan that meets our individual needs . Hang in there, if you've put the training and followed your plan you will be ready come race day. Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm not even close to those volumes, but I think it's great all of the awesome training you guys have done! I can't wait to see some of you crush that course. I'll be in the back...getting the last drop out of my entry fee. :-) I'm actually really happy with what I've been able to accomplish this year. It's been a busy year, and I'm healthy (finally) and injury free. I can't really ask for more than that. And I get to see my new husband at the finish line!!! |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() phatknot - 2009-11-02 7:28 AM wow thats scary. and you are fortunate indeed! some simple and good words from my coach for this point in the game when the anxiety starts to build "just focus on the race and what you've done... you can't control the weather or what others have done to train... you have done the work, stay focused and do what you know how to do...which is go long!" Great advice! |

When I use the trainer, the garmin cadence and speed sensor tells me speed and lenght of the effort. Cateyes or Blackburns will do the same. I don't know if anybody else agrees, but freaking trainers are "drainers". |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I get mileage on my power tap computer head when Im on the trainer. I'm ok with my trainer but for only up to 3 hrs. After that Im about ready to check myself into an inpatient facility. The important things are to take breaks as needed, have a good fan/temp going, ample drinks, and have a tv that you can crank up. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() the few times I have used the trainer, my Cat Eye has a cadence monitor... The sensor is attached to the rear wheel so I can track distance that way... I stay off it at all costs, if possible... Too many dish towels on the saddle make for an altered ride... But a pillow on the saddle for my butt is too much! Edited by TriBabe2006 2009-11-04 6:32 AM |

Stress fracture in June.....no running until about 2 weeks before IMKY. I did a bunch of walk breaks and was able to run more of the marathon course this year then last year when I did not have an injury! Been having nagging foot pain leading up the IMAZ....once again crummy run volume. Nothin I can do about the training now, just want to be healthy on 11/22! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So there was my race strategy for my first half Ironman back in 2005... I guess it applies to IM too... or not? ___________________ My goals for the Steelhead Half/iron distance triathlon August 6th... Since it is only a half ironman I have decided to race twice as hard. My goals are to finish strong and do it in way that it will reflect my possible full ironman time…. My overall strategy will be as follows… In preparation for the tri I intend to ride the whole course the day before... hard so I know what to expect. I also want to run inmediatelly after the bike to get my legs used to the effort. But the real strategy will be the day of the event and I hope it will be as follows... The swim I intend to start in the center of the pack… and will go as hard as I can for the first ½ of a mile… then I will settle in a comfortable pace…. and since it is my best event I intend to go all out the last 200 meters or so.. I hate when the googles get foggy.... so I decided not to wear any. Sometimes is hard to navigate with them so I assume that without them it will be easier navigation.
The bike From the swim, I will go sockless… too long to try to put socks on… Since I am not putting any bodyglade on (hate the stuff), I am sure I will take a couple of more seconds to get rid of the wet suit. I will start fast taking advantage of my fresh legs, will start with a big gear and will get into aero position right away. Already got rid of my water bottle cages (too heavy)… I will rely on the two water stations they have on the course. I think that two drinks of water will be enough to sustain me for the 56 miles. As soon as I get comfy on the bike, I will drop a gear and just pedal as fast as I can to pass as many people as I can. I am sure my heart bit will be up, but only slightly. Many people have suggested I should take some sort of nutrition on the bike, but my question is where will I put such thing. I thought of a bento box, but it will ruin my aerodynamic form thus gave that idea up. A Gel, maybe but since I won’t be drinking too much water I am sure I will not be able to stomach the heavy consistency of the gel.. so why bother. I heard the temperature will be high in the 80’s, and I just got this black racing suit… it will be hot but it looks cool. The Run… As soon as I get out of the bike, I will try to get some water down…no much since I don’t want to stop anywhere to pee. Just a little to moisten my lips… If I drink much I will become heavy and I don’t think I want a full stomach for the run. I just got this brand new shoes which I hope to break in the half marathon. They are supposed to make me faster (their web site says), I have never heard of them but they are pretty expensive so I got them and I am sure they will be great for my run. Sockless again, I don’t think I want to lose time putting on socks. When I leave the transition area, my goal is to go fast for the first 21 minutes… I think I will try to put my best 5k ever at the beginning of the run.. Then I am sure I will get comfortable and try to maintain a good form for the rest of the run. Water stations, I will get some water every other water station…. Who needs water or Gatorade every mile… I cannot stomach the Gatorade so water will do for the whole race. My main goal is to finish strong, I am sure that with this strategy I will be done and ready for more. I have trained a lot and this is just a small brick workout…. _________________Pretty decent strategy huh? |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm pleased to report the road trip went as well as 10.5 hours of driving can yesterday and I'm so so so happy to be in Arizona!!! ![]() My coach has me planned to ride 2 loops of the course this weekend. It sounds like the bike lane is shot to hell and I should avoid this. Are there any other good local routes that simulate the flat/climb of the race course well? The goal is to sorta nail down my pacing/watts for race day. Thanks! |
