My running may be derailed a bit.

Two weeks ago (Sun 8/7) I rolled my ankle while running on the trails. I mentioned it and we decided to stay off the trails.

After yesterday's run, my foot hurt like crazy. Didn't hurt while running, but hurt afterwards. Only hurt minimally when I'd push off after stopping for gu, so I wasn't sure what was going on. I went to the dr today and luckily xrays didn't show anything. So that's good, but he feels that there could  be some tissue/ligament/or tendon damage.

His advice to take some time... So, hopefully it won't effect my plans. 11weeks to MCM.

Sounds like good advice (which is why he's a doctor and I'm not ).

pilotzs - 2011-08-15 2:32

The first 1 1/2 miles this weekend, I kept thinking, "How am I going to do 13.1 miles of this off of a 56 mile bike?".

That was exactly what I said to my mate as we were taking our stuff back to the car after the race! We were planning on a HIM next year (and an IM the year after) but we think we might be scrapping that idea for now!

At this point, I am committed. I am getting in some decent training, but I could/should be doing more.I am looking to learn and have fun, so no lofty goals at this point. The good is, with all the training, my bike, run and swim have all improved a lot this year.

Yes, your swim/bike/run has increased tremendously! You're really rocking the training and it's awesome to see Jason!

I'm looking forward to getting back and hammering it out with you next year and have you bring my biking up! You've made some great gains!

No doubt.  If I remember right he is about 2 minutes/mile faster than I remember last year.  And Jason absolutely crushed the bike at Mountain Lakes.  Very impressive all around.

I think he definitely gets the "most improved" award in our group.

Thanks guys!!! I must be doing something right then. Laughing

Still can't keep up with Sands, but I'm aspiring....  One day!!!

This HIM training is not for the faint of heart, so more power to all those folks that train for these and IM routinely.  It's been a learning experience for sure, but definitely worth it.

I'm already evaluating for next season, but I want to see how this HIM goes first.   I think I might dial it back and focus on OLY distance next year, with a goal of getting to 2:30.  Right now, I just want to break 3 hours for Rocketman.

I've also found that the increased cycling seems to have improved my run, so I'm going to try to keep up the biking this winter and see how that goes.  I let it drop back off last winter, although I had good intentions.

You should have been out there last night - oof.  Somebody hit the "haul a$$" button.  On the good side I was happy to see that I had the same power as Chad going up Karl Daly.  Unfortunately I need to lose 25lbs to match his climbing ability...

I'd be pretty surprised if you didn't break 3 by a pretty good bit (awful weather notwithstanding).

The way I see it, you are generally faster than me at the swim and bike and pretty similar to me on the run. If I can manage 3:01 for an Oly I see no reason you can't go under!

Think I'll look into starting a HIM plan even if I decide not to actually do one for now as it seems like a good way to improve my times for shorter events.

There is probably some good in doing this, mainly to increase your volume.  One reason I did sign up for the HIM, was to continue building my volume, and this was my goal to make that happen.  Yes, I want to finish the HIM and have a good showing, but it was also to help me build the volume necessary for me to get better/faster overall.  Now that I know what the volume is and feels like, I feel like I'm developing a "better" base, which I can start building on and start setting more aggressive goals.

My goal last winter was to run more, and I accomplished that for the most part and my running improved.  My goal this summer was to ride more (and train for the HIM), which I'm doing okay at,as of right now.  Next spring, I may focus on my swim a bit more.  Hopefully, this will set me up for next year pretty good, so I can focus on the OLY races next year.

I'm still a painfully slow runner comparatively, so I still have a lot of running work to do this winter.  I think I'm going to do a marathon training plan (or some hybrid) to increase running volume for my Half Marathons and see if I can get closer to 2 hours.

I've picked up a lot in the mentor group, so I hope we can keep this going into the winter.

I can echo the bolded statements above.  The HIM training has really helped my base for all three disciplines but especially the bike.  Long distances aren't as intimidating now and are enjoyable.  Also, b/c of the HIM training leading into the winter I'll be able to do more run speedwork for the offseason run races and hopefully set a PR (or two!).

While I'm not following a HIM I definately think volume is a huge factor. A lot of the OLY programs I've seen have had really short workouts.  I'm sure this is fine for some people but I've seen big improvements in my running when I was running more.

I'm have some serious numbness issues when riding.  Anything over about 45 minutes and my boys are a starting to go numb.  Is this a fit issue, time for a new saddle or something else?

Others know more on this, but I'd say saddle.   A search in the main forum should turn up some discussion on this.

I agree with Sands, search the main forums, as I've seen many discussions on this.

Could be the saddle putting pressure on certain areas.  I guess it could be fit if you are putting more pressure on your front area vs. your sit bones for extended times.

I've got a Cobb saddle, and like it, but I end up with some numbness after a while, although manageable.  I've thought about trying the Adamo saddle, just to see if it makes much difference.  At this point, I'm not messing with my bike fit though, as I'll be changing it all around after the season.

I've gotten bad about updating my logs but I felt like I had a good week.  I got all my workouts in with the exception of a run that decided to skip because I was feeling pretty beat up.

As for those swim times... that's awesome!

Good job everyone.

Good week for me.  Got in most of my workouts and did some good HIM prep with a long ride and brick run.  Had a good 12 mile run on Saturday morning.

Also, got in a nice tempo OWS this past Sunday in prep for Rocketman.  I didn't put up Sands time's, but feel I paced it pretty good (in my drag suit) and felt pretty comfortable.  I think I"m getting my breathing down to stay more comfy on my swims.

Also, if you do some OWS solo, i reccomend getting one of these:

http://www.ishof.org/safety/ssd.htm

First time to use it this weekend, and it worked perfectly.  Didn't even know it was there.

My wife and I are doing the Gator Bait OLY in Vicksburg, MS.  It's the first year for it but I've heard the location is great - and flat.

I have been on the bike a lot, A LOT.  That's the main reason I chose the plan, so I could feel 100% confident about the bike.  But you're right, it is a massive amount of time and honestly I'm eager to dial it back after the race.  I'm sure my wife feels the same.

I understand.  Mississippi should be pretty flat.

Sands and I are headed to an OLY this weekend too, so couldn't remember which one you were headed to.

My wife and kids feel the same about my training for the HIM.  I'm ready to dial it back a bit too.

Good luck on the races everyone. I really wish I were out racing this weekend

I have managed to find a local half marathon and a 5k to sign up for, but I just haven't done it yet.

I did manage to twist my ankle and sprain it ever so slightly. Not sure how really, but I sure noticed it last week when trying to run! I've taken all of last week and part of this week off and it hasn't been fun. I managed to get a 4miler in yesterday, but I was breathing hard and felt way out of shape!

I'm 9 weeks out from the MCM and I've missed almost 2weeks of training... yes I'm starting to freak out a bit! Yikes!
