Hey guys, as the only female rider in a group of men (one of which is my husband) I am about to call your bluff.   Yes my men frequently have to wait for me at the top of hills, or when they decide to get macho and race each other down the long stretches, but you know what,  YOU GUYS WANT US CHICKS ALONG FOR THREE REASONS.  1) WE ARE YOUR EXCUSE TO STOP, TAKE A BREATHER, AND PRETEND TO BE WAITING FOR US 2)  HOW ELSE ARE YOU GOING TO GET A WOMAN TO STARE AT YOUR ARSE FOR 3 HOURS STRAIGHT and 3) HOW ELSE ARE YOU GOING TO GET TO STARE AT WOMAN'S ARSE FOR 3 HOURS STRAIGHT?!?!!?!?

And for the record, I HATE BRICKS!!!!!

Things have converted to an every-other day schedule for my training.  Trying to balance working full time, being a mom and a triathlete is tricky.  Tonight I spent 2 hours assembling Valentines Day cards (remember those?)  Then I watched UNC spank DUKE.  (Officially I am a Kansas grad so I hate both UNC and DUKE).  I know I should have been on the trainer while I watched the game, but.......

Lastly, why do cats always feel the right to climb on your lap when you are on a laptop?!?!?!  Don't they realize how difficult this is to type with a cat accross my arms? And what's with the claws out kneeding thing.... I don't get any softer!!

So I am going for a long bike ride with my wife today.  This is a good thing and a bad thing.

Good because I love to get out and train with her.  Bad because she is soooo, sloooow on the bike.  I read an article once that said triathletes trained on the bike at a talking pace too much.  meaning if you can have a casual conversation while riding you aren't riding hard enough.

I don't keep it at 300+ watts but I do like to get moving when the trail allows it, which many times means that I am sitting there waiting for her at intersections clipped out of my pedals and feet on the ground.

Going to try to be on my best behavior today and just ride at her pace.  Though I did temp attach my new Powertap to my road bike so i could test it out, so will have to do a few sprints to see how my watts lookLaughing

SPANK! I ride with my husband and I am faster than him. Sometimes, I treat part of the ride as interval training.  Go as fast as I possibly can for some period and bike back to him for recovery.  Of course, the other option I use is to go have a nice leisurely ride with the man just for the hell of it.  There is more to life than speed .

Here is a picture from our hike today.  Note the lava vent and the sulfur steam pouring out of it. The eruption happened in 1959 and it is still cooling all these years later.

Yesterday, I went for a run with a girl I used to work with. She's arunner...done some 1/2's and marathons. We got talking about the husband/wife thing we've been talking about here. Her hubby is a hardcore Ironman guy. She HATES training with him. She says whenever they get a chance to go out running together, he is so much faster than he'll get ahead of her and turn around and run backwards basically taunting her! So she tries NOT to work out with him, he's not very encouraging, etc.

So yes i look at it as well as a blessing that wife is on the same page as me living the healthy lifestyle and encouraging each other not competing.

And Kim & Mr. RedKnight this is for you....Hmmmm, what color should I type the final sentence of my post in??? And yes that took me 5 minutes to do!

cadmus - 2009-02-11 11:18 PM It's a sad, sad day.  I was hoping to score a new ride this year using our tax return.  Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it is going to happen.  Looks like another year on the cyclocross bike.    Oh well, I guess there are worse problems to have.

Not sure what kind of budget you are talking about but have you looked into putting one together yourself?

It takes a bit longer than just going to the shop and picking up one allready built but a lot cheaper.

There is no way I could have afforded my bike if I went out and bought one with comparable components.

Even cheaper if you buy a used frame.  I have seen Specialized Transition frames on Slowtwitch sell in the 400 range.  There is also a guy here on BT selling a Tri frame for something like 200-300 bucks.  If it wasn't way too big for me 58cm I would have picked it up just because the price was so good.

If this is something that might work for you let me know.  LOL I am getting bored at work now because I have all the parts for my build, so I haven't been combing e-bay, craigslist and forums all day looking for parts.

The easiest way to deal with fonts and colors here is to go to the Control Panel link near the BT logo in the top left and near the bottom you will see this

"Use rich edit box when composing messages?"  Change it to TinyMCE(Experimental)  And you get a toolbar similar to MS word that has a font button.

LOL!

A very high priority in a race is #3!  Finding a nice fast pace booty is essential in the enjoyment of races! Cool

Good luck trying to balance everything and stay sane!

OK, this made me laugh this morning!  DH has the same problem, especially with the kneading thing.  All 3 of our cats do that to him (none do it to me) and he always says the same thing - it's not going to get any softer!  Of course, they also follow him all around the house, even into the bathroom.  He definitely has a way with cats.

Now for the possible bad news.  Has anyone here ever had a stress fracture in their foot?  I think I may have oneFrown.  I was lucky enough to get an appointment with my ortho this afternoon (he squeezed me in at the end of his day) so hopefully I'll find out then if this pain is serious enough to keep me from training, or if I will just have to tone it down for a while.

Stress Fracture?  ECK!!!  He will say to stay off it for a while to let it recovery!!  No running... Ask him about biking, swimming, and the elyptical (sp-can you tell I don't use one?) training.  All seem to be very low impact on the foot area?  Keep us posted!

Nice work Kim!!! The world is your oyster now!

Hey Matt.....Have you looked at buying something up here across the border? Like the whole 20% exchange rate would be nice for you I bet. As well checkout pinkbike.com...I bought a 3 year old Cervelo p2(aluminum frame) from a guy here in Calgary for $500. I saw retail on it at $2k.

It does show some US bikes as well...But i'd bet you'd get a better deal driving across the border.

I see what you mean. A whole cornocopia of colours. A plethora of paints. A riotous rainbow of radiance....etc etc

I bought a new set of collapsable aero bars today. Can't wait to get them set up on the bike and try them out. I can use them on my road bike and when I need to hill climb the arm rests flip up and I can grab the top part of the handle bars for more power. The best of tri and road bikes put together.

Ran with my wife tonight...I was sooo proud of her. She ran 6km without stopping. slower paced at 43 minutes, but was happy. She is only just getting into running, and it was nice to run together. Kids are at Grandma's!!

I got my bike rental reserved today for Vancouver. I was thinking of taking mine out there. But $100 to fly it, and take it apart twice, and put it back together twice, I thought forget it. I have a Giant OCR rented($84 for 48hrs). Its a road bike, so even its totally uncomfortable I think I can handle 20km on it. Getting excited 3 weeks tomorrow i head out there!!

I'll keep an eye out.  Though I found from looking that when going to a tri-bike they tend to be smaller than you would get a road bike, so you might want to get a smaller frame.

I used this chart for the planet-x

S(48) M(51) L(54) XL(57)

Rider Height - Less than 5′5″ - Go for the 650C Stealth Pro Carbon instead

Rider Height - 5′5″ to 5′9″ - SMALL

Rider Height - 5′10″ to 6′0″ - MEDIUM

Rider Height - 6′0″ to 6′2″ - LARGE

Rider Height - 6′2″ to 6′6″ - X-Large

Great idea to do it that way!  Good luck!  I think you'll like that Giant.  I've rented an OCR before in Chicago, and I've seen them at a number of places.  They're versatile, and comfortable!

Once you ride around a little bit on it, you'll do just fine!

Morning everyone.  I got good news/bad news from the doctor yesterday.  Which do you want first?Smile

OK, bad news first - no running for at least 2 weeks, possibly as much as 6.  It will depend on the results of my bone scan next week.  X-rays didn't show a sfx (but they rarely do) so he wants to get the bone scan to rule it out.  I'm in a boot for now although it may only be for a week - again it depends on the test results next week.  If it does turn out to be a sfx, no running for at least 6 weeks.

Now the good news - he thinks it's more likely that it's just a strained tendon and not a sfx because of the location of the pain.  It's the top of my foot that hurts, not the bottom which is where it would be if it was a sfx in my seismoid bone.  If I do have a fracture, it would be in my 1st metatarsal, which is very uncommon (he said he's only seen one other person who fractured that bone).  If it's just a tendon strain, no running for a couple of weeks and some PT should be all I would need to do.

Now for the really good news - no matter which one it turns out to be, I can still swim, bike and do the elliptical (I hate that thing but if those are my only choices, I'll have to learn to like it).  All of those are OK because they're low/no impact.  So I'll still be able to keep my fitness up.

Race-wise - the 10k on the 22nd is definitely outFrown.  The half marathon in April and the tri in May will depend on test results.  If it's a sfx, those races are out also and I'll have to wait to do fall races.  If it's just a tendon strain, I should be able to still do both although I would end up walking more than I would like in the half marathon.  So please everyone pray that it's just a strained tendon!

Janet

Sorry to hear that Janet but let's hope it is not a sfx and you will be back on track.  I will keep my fingers crossed.

Happy Birthday to your son Tony.  It sounds like you have a fun day planned.

As for me, I am laying low and getting ready for the half on Sunday.  I am excited and proud of my wife.  She is going from having a child to a half marathon in just over 7 months.  Not too shabby.  I have been trying to figure out a good target time for the race.  I drove the course last weekend and read a few articles on how tough the half course is.  The first 3 miles are straight up hill and then you turn around and head back down.  Miles 6-9 are somewhat flat with small rolling hills.  Miles 9-12, however, are up hill as well with the steepest climb from 11-12.  Yikes.  Apparently, this course sets up well for full marathoners to run a negative split but that does not help me out too much.  I plan on taking the first 3 out very conservatively and then push 6-9 a little and see how I feel when I hit the hills around mile 9.  With that said, I am looking at something around 1:35 - 1:38.  I think I could do better but we will see.
