Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Showered after workout, ate breakfast, got my 2 year old up and dressed, wife decides to go garage sale shopping. 2 year old looks at me and says. "BIKE RIDE". Who am I to say no? 45 minutes on the mtn. bike with me towing her, inlcuding three laps around a small lake as Ella shouts, "Water...AGAIN!!!" She loves riding around the lake. Glad she likes our Wee Hoo tow behind as its a great way to get an extra workout in. - Andy: S 6 / B 6 / R 8 / Rest Days 1 ; Total = 20 ; 14:58'46" |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Charlotte - it's great to see you back in the group. Sorry to hear you've been having a rough time, but hopefully your son will improve with time and the love and support you're showing him. With regards to the run, don't worry about not having done any speedwork. I haven't done any for a couple of months (unintentionally - my running's gone a little awry), but I still managed to do the run at my sprint tri last week with a faster pace than the same one last year (and they'd increased the distance). The slow running may not feel like it's helping, but it is. Chris - hope the marathon goes well. I look forward to reading all about it. Ernesto - thanks for explaining crit racing. I've heard of them, but never really understood what it involves. I'm so impressed that you can do that. The pace and the pack would terrify me (even if I was fit enough to manage it!). I've been on night shift this week, and although I've mostly got my training in I got a little behind on posting on the challenge. I had a short bike ride on Wednesday, long run on Friday and short run (parkrun) this morning. The parkrun is 5k, which back in the day would have easily taken me over 30min. I guess it's progress that I had to jog back to the car to make sure my run was eligible for the challenge They finally posted some of the splits for the monday's triathlon (Kevin still hasn't got his), so my RR is here - Andy: S 6 / B 6 / R 8 / Rest Days 1 ; Total = 20 ; 14:58'46" [edit to fix simulpost with scott] Edited by chapfallen 2012-05-12 10:14 AM |

![]() | ![]() Short report. Kept pace for first 18 or so. Then lack of fitness kicked in. I would have DNF'd but it was basically impossible. Very small race. No medical tents or transportation to finish. So I walked/jogged rest of way not worrying about time. 3:56 something. Achilles hurts now (I'm icing it) but didn't hurt during race until I started walking. Basic problem is that 8 week tapers aren't advisable. Still glad I did it. Tri training (not running!) starts tomorrow. oh. And most of the walk/running was shirtless since my bloody nipples made a mess of my shirt and it was embarrassing. Got that fixed at the medical tent at finish and put on finisher's shirt. Good thing I finished then. I would have had nothing to change into. I had used Vaseline on them, but that apparently was insufficient. I guess next time I have to find BandAids that won't come off. (Most do). |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Chris - Congrats on finishing another Marathon. Sorry that this one was so tough but given your Achilles challenges I give you huge props for keeping at it with the water running and getting to the starting line. Awesome perseverance getting to the finish. Your post just made me think of that Office episode where they do the run and the one guy got bloody nipples. I think I feel worse about that experience for you than anything else. I am lucky - I have nipples of steel! |

I hate to be negative, but I knew this was not going to be such a good race because of the lack of training. Oh well, treat it like a workout. Tomorrow I'll send you the spreadsheet for the next two weeks. Your redemption will come, but now like you said you need to focus on triathlons. Stay cool buddy! Not the end of the world, just a yucky day. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Today I rode with a female teammate (strong girl) that is training for Coeur D'Alene Ironman. Went for 90 miles in 4:55:03 at a very comfortable pace, keeping the HR low at an average 121 BPM. Focused on nutrition and metabolic efficiency. Yesterday was off. - Andy: S 6 / B 6 / R 8 / Rest Days 1 ; Total = 20 ; 14:58'46" |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Today, "long" ride - MAFish 25.4 miles @ 1:33'00". Playing with speed/gear/HR combo to find my sweet spot, so HR a little bit higher than I wanted, but not too bad. Tomorrow a scheduled day off, so I will add it today. - Andy: S 6 / B 6 / R 8 / Rest Days 1 ; Total = 20 ; 14:58'46" |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Chris - Way to tough it out. Give that achilles some time to rest. How about actually swimming in the pool? 3hr brick. The tweaks from the bike fit made a difference and I felt like was about 1mph faster than before. I think I will now be able to hold 21 mph for the entire 56 miles. Off the bike for 8 miles at 8:00 pace. Today was one of the warmest days of the year, which is good for simulating race conditions. HR was way over MAF, but part of the purpose of the brick was to get more comfortable suffering. Mission accomplished. - Andy: S 6 / B 6 / R 8 / Rest Days 1 ; Total = 20 ; 14:58'46" Edited by JoePetto 2012-05-12 2:46 PM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() -Chris, congrats on finishing a tough race for you and am sure the next one will be much better! BTW, your time is still better than the time I did for my Chicago Marathon, so for me its a good time - Charlotte, thanks for sharing your update and hope things get better with your son. We have you in our thoughts so hang in there and enjoy your upcoming race! - Ernesto, great bike ride today, it must be the new bike Today a shorter, easy paced 45 mile bike ride with nice climbing in 2:47 + 30 min brick run. Feeling good for my IM next week! - Andy: S 6 / B 6 / R 8 / Rest Days 1 ; Total = 20 ; 14:58'46" |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good job on finishing that hard marathon while bleeding profusely Chris! Yeah, next time use some tape. I like plain duct tape myself, it is so sticky it stays there. And the time was better than most of us would have training like hell. Good on you mate. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Always love your pics Mark!!! I so miss the ocean but the mountains are a good trade! Chris- Sorry about the tough race but you making it through is an inspiration. I've decided to go ahead and compete in the tri on June 17. It is a long sprint so my goal will be to finish in as close to 2 hours as I can. I know that sounds like a long time for a sprint but it's 750m swim, 17.2mile bike, 3.1mile run. I think I'm giving myself a fair goal. I need to race and I need the experience to "LEARN" how to race... one of my biggest problems is little race experience so I need it to learn how to push myself. |

New user ![]() | ![]() @ Chris - good for you for getting through your race. Sorry to hear about the bloody nipple...is that drink? Sorry, I digress. @ Charlotte - keep positive and continue surrounding your son with love. Sending lots of positive vibes your family's way. Ran my Dirty Girl Mud Run today - a 5K run with 11 obstacles throughout. A bit battered and bruised, but none the worse for wear. Great time and have now signed up for the Warrior Dash in August. First TRI is coming up quickly too - June 23! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good bike ride with a couple friends today after spending the morning at a cheer station for a local half marathon. I would have run the race, but I'm signed up for the Fargo half next weekend and am hoping to do well there.

![]() | ![]() Hello All. A short race report is up. I more or less did what Ernesto said and dropped out after 18 miles, but not because of the achilles. I basically did a "BQ or bust" strategy and busted. No regrets. A 3:31 is no more valuable to me than a 3:56. I didn't actually drop out only because I couldn't see any other way of getting to the finish line other than walking or jogging, but I don't think I caused much damage from 18 to 26 given how slow I was going. So I don't get credit for sticking it out (and I wasn't bleeding "profusely" Mark!). If there had been a golf cart to take me to the finish, I would have happily taken it and not regretted it. If you look at my race report and the accompanying garmin file you'll see it was just lack of fitness. My heart rate steadily climbed until mile 18 where it hit 171, which is probably around my LT. At my last marathon, where I had better training, it took me until mile 23 to hit a high heart rate. Overall, marathons are just a hellish distance. The first half felt just plain easy. I ran about 1:44 for the first half, but I could have easily run a 1:38, even with the reduced fitness. As for recovery, my AT doesn't feel so bad today, but that might just be because my leg muscles hurting are masking it! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Happy Mothers Day. Work made Friday my rest day. I rode my bike to a neighboring town for a High School Soccer tournament my oldest daughters were it.
