Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wanted to wish everyone a happy weekend, and good luck to the racers! I'm doing the Amica 19.7 Lake Las Vegas Triathlon on Sunday, not really excited about it, so it'll be just another long training day, and another notch on races I've done. I did the same one two years ago, so hopefully I'll get some PR, but we'll see. I'm going to try to aim to do good on the bike, but not all out, and leave it all on the run. I only have one more race prior to the HIM, so I kind of need to get that thought process worked out. I seem to always leave it all out on the bike, and get burned on the run a little. Last night, I suffered a minor heat exhaustion (nausea/dizziness/lightheaded) that lasted for several minutes. Thank goodness to the quick wits of my friend. She gave me endurolytes, I got off my bike, sat down, and poured water on my neck, and bounced back quickly. I was very surprised at how quick it can take you down. I felt quite embarrassed because I was the only one that suffered. However, everyone else was a little concerned as well, and after a long downhill, we all stopped by a gas station and got ice/water/gatorade. Luckily, next week the rides will start at 7:30. The heat will be more bearable. I seem to have some sensitivity in the higher heat. So, I'm going to get Cool ties and/or arm coolers. My neck was really hot, as if I had a fever (the heat seems to affect my head/neck than the rest of my body). Rather be safe than sorry. Glad that it was only just a few minutes and wasn't any worse than it was. Best part of the evening was I was able to spend some real good time in the aerobars and it was my fastest Thursday night ride. Go figure eh?! I was SO amazingly comfortable in the aerobars. What the heck was I afraid of?! This morning, at 5:15ish, my fiance woke me up and asked me call an ambulance. He has been vomiting for more than 5 hours, so I ended up missing my early run and taking care of him at the hospital. He's fine now. He was just extremely dehydrated and it was the worse thing he ever felt in his life. We think it was bad salad (I didn't have it) potentially causing food poisoning. By the time we both got home, the temps rose to 105. It's now 108. Bleh! Take it easy out there, and be smart riding in the heat (if there is any by you guys!), and best of luck to the racers! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() On my ride today I saw a mama black bear and her two yearling cubs!!!! Mama was trying to get into a dumpster while her yunguns were trying to climb some nearby trees. At first they were only around 25-30 ft away, I felt it prudent to watch them from a little farther as I had no car to sit behind. By the time I left a nice traffic jam was starting. Understandable as those bears were sooo incredibly cute and mama was BIG! sorry no photos - need to get a new phone! I hope everyone is having a great Friday! |

I was in the past two of Ken's mentor groups - just wanted to drop in and see what was up. My first race of the season is this sunday in Rock Hall, Maryland. Water temp is currently 79, just above wet suit legal. The forecast calls for a drop in outside air temp and some rain, so I'm taking one with me just in case. Good luck to everyone racing this weekend! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Bill - I have Cosmic Carbones. While they're not really "fully carbon", it's just carbon fairing. I asked Mommy for them for Christmas, and thought I would get better/faster. It did make my bike look much more sweeter, but I don't think it helped much with the speed because of all the hills in this area. I do feel the difference when I'm going downhills, just not so much going up. I decided to get Mavic Ksyriums, and got them for a really good deal. They are now my everyday wheels. Personally, I regret asking mom for them (and I did tell her this, and she just basically said, "No worries, just enjoy them when you can, and sell if if you seriously don't want them." What a great mom eh?). SO...if I were you, I would keep the stock wheels, or upgrade to semi-deep (30mm or so), due to the fact that you have hilly rides. When you start IMAZ, it'll be just better money-wise in the long run to just rent the deeper wheels or ask your buddies that you really trust for them. For me, while I wanted to sell them for the past couple months, I have a HIM that's pretty flat, so I decided to keep them because I know they may benefit me much more than my current climbing wheels. Then I'll sell them. Just my $0.4 (rates has gone up) |

I know you mentioned the Garmin pedal based solution, but who knows if that will ever see the light of day. If your 2nd choice is wheel based, you wouldnt want some expensive wheels that you can't use anymore. Great conversation on a good topic! |

Good luck to those who are racing this weekend. I am signed up to do a century ride. I am not ready for it but I am going to give it a go. I am doing it by myself which I think I will enjoy in this case. I don't have to worry about keeping up with anyone or having to continually wait for others and if I end up needing to hitch a ride with the support crew then I can keep that a secret between me and them I hope everyone is enjoying the short work week.
Kathleen - are you doing the Elephant Rock? My hubby did the 100 mile tour last year and I was there with kids to cheer him on. It looks like a fun event - the course is pretty crowded but thins out after the metric century folks turn off - one thing - last year it was REALLY HOT (got in the 90's by the lunchtime) - however I don't remember the wind being too horrible. Steve forgot his Gu's at the hotel and had to live off the course. Unfortunately they only had Nunn's (beside gatorade/water) and he assumed they were similar to other GU type products - probably suffered a little more than normal because of it Have fun - look forward to hearing about it - I sure miss the front range! Hey Robin, Yes, I am doing E Rock. My goal is to get on the road at 5:30 and get as much done as possible before the heat hits. I am glad to hear that it thins out after metric century turn off. I did the metric century a couple of years ago and there was certainly a lot of people! Thanks for the well wishes and I will let you know how it goes. |

If your 2nd choice is wheel based, you wouldnt want some expensive wheels that you can't use anymore. Great conversation on a good topic! Ken, I understand that Vector may just be a Unicorn that I never actaully see. My second choice is the Quarq. It has some of the issues that i have with wheel_based, but not as much. I hate the idea of pairing together expensive options. I assume I'll be switching out wheels and dont want to put extra value in the form of PM on them. Plus, I've had one one pretty hard crash already and all it cost me (other than recovery), was some shifters, but i very easily could have ruined a wheel or two. My issues with the quarq are similar. I'm not fully committed to a crankset yet. I have a standard, but i keep hearing good things about compact crackets for triathletes. Plus, at some point, I'll get a road bike. I guess i can learn how to switch out cracksets, but pedals would be SO much easier. These decisions are giving me a headache :-) |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Awesome day with friends at Tri Sharks Classic. Sprint went well. 5th in age group. 1:21, down 3:30 from the same course last year. 21 mph plus on the bike in strong winds. Swim was good and fun, but chilly. The run was awesome. Very fast for me. I love to race! I attribute a lot of the improvement to lean eating on paleo and strength training with kettlebells with Chris and naturally great bike coaching and overall training plan with Stan Watkins. Swim was better with help from Kevin McCarthy. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi guys,Had a great time this weekend on the eastern shore of MD this weekend.Placed 100 out of 118 overall. Not impressive when you look at it that way, but i improved on my individual performance from last year, so i'm pleased. This is only the second tri i've ever done, so i'm just glad that i finished. Will post a link to my race report when i figure out how to. |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Getting my training started again. After Florida 70.3, I spent another week on vacation with my family. Had a great time but put on a few pounds. Now to drop those pounds and get to work on my run. |

My goal is to get on the road at 5:30 and get as much done as possible before the heat hits. I am glad to hear that it thins out after metric century turn off. I did the metric century a couple of years ago and there was certainly a lot of people! Thanks for the well wishes and I will let you know how it goes. |
