Congratulations! Welcome to the club! Did we warn you that it is addicting. Your time was good especially for using a mountain bike. Good report too. Just a couple of things based on your report. -Xterra usually has a promotion on their wet suits through this site. I bought a full length long sleeve vortex for $150.00 and my daughter bought the sleeveless for $120.00. If you buy off of ebay, don't buy from a salt water state, Salt water turns the neoprene brittle. -A road bike (even a cheap one) will add about 2 mph onto your speed and bike shoes 1-2 mph. You can find some good used ones, especially in Colorado. I bought mine off of ebay. -We all suck at swimming. I had a swim coach tell me I swim like a barge. Keep practicing, you will get better. |

Sam - Congratulations. Your first one is in the bag! Great job!!! Agree with Jim's comments. One of the areas that I think are key for swimming is time on the pool. I've read extensively and am starting to buy in to the thought that while technique is very important there are large gains to be made from swimming a lot. yes, if you hace glaring technical problems you should fix them, but the fine tuning of a stroke is not going to yield huge gains when compared to getting to the pool a lot and swimming a lot. My concern is that CF seems too much like weight lifting and regardless of form those deep squats with 180lbs looks like my knee will blow out! comments .. .? I have never done CF, but I do strength training a couple of times a week. Primarily, because I have a son who is about to turn 14 and is naturally filled with testosterone and HGH, and he wants to do strength training. We use a bowflex with a high number of reps and lighter weights. I am not looking to put on bulk only strengthen and I don't want to damage his growth plates, so no heavy lifting. Also, I wanted to control it and make sure he uses proper technique and is smart about it. So, I choose to do it with him. Plus its 45 minute on just him and I doing something physical, it has turned into good bonding time. As for legs, I don't do squats. Even when I was younger and lifted heavier weights they were never comfortable and I was concerned about damaging my back, so I just don't do them. For legs I do hamstring curls, leg extensions and calf lifts. I know ever triathlon workout plan seems to call for squats, I just never felt comfortable or safe doing them. I prefer to focus on core work back, abdominals, chest, and shoulders. |

I know I need to do strength to prevent injury and improve all round, but can never find the enthusiasm/time/commitment; seeing a CF offer on groupon made me consider it; but those big bulky looking guys doing deep weighted squats concerns me more ... Hmm ... guess i'll swimg by the gym tonight and check it out/talk to the coaches. |

Expert 2811 | Subject: RE: Consistency Equals Success Since Mark H. brought it up, and everyone, except Mark Z is going into the off season, is there some other type of exercise/physical activity being done other than the big 3 swim bike run. If so what are you doing and why? Is it to improve a specific area of weakness, a mental break from S/B/R or is it just for fun? As, I said in a prior post, I started doing strength training with my son, and in December I will start playing indoor soccer (that's for fun). Just wondering what we have going or planned. |

Jim- The wife and I have discussed going to Yoga classes for the winter at our local Y. I am really hoping to focus on my core muscles in the off season in hopes to reap the benefits in my swim. I still plan to S/B/R with more emphasis on the run since I have a half marathon in January and March. I am down to 220lbs but would like to see another 10lbs come off in the off season. I just can't seem to rid myself of this damn muffin top so I'm hoping the increase in running and a cleaner diet will help me lose it before next season. |

I prefer to focus on core work back, abdominals, chest, and shoulders. X2 I never really felt comfortable with squats either. Back in my younger days when all I did was strength train I always skipped the squats because I could feel all the pressure going straight to my lower back and I was worried about doing some major damage. I have taught my 16 year old son the same lessons your teaching to your son Jim. I thought it would be so cool to have a 350LB chest that I worked out 5 days a week with heavy weight and I have regretted it since. When working with heavy weight my appetite was out of control and I got HUGE! Not cut, no definition what so ever, all I cared about was bench pressing 350lbs. I tell my son this story a lot to discourage him from lifting heavy weights. Just my 2 cents!! |

No off season here Jim, you are right. Since I live near the water, kayaking is my choice. I just love being on the water and doing some upper body workout at the same time. Weights don't motivate me much, only occasionally I would pick them up. I'm also thinking of picking up yoga again. |

Expert 1109 Guatemala | Subject: RE: Consistency Equals Success Sam, congratulations on becoming a triathlete, well done and get ready for lots of fun! It took me almost a week to recover from my China trip and a cold that I developed during the trip, so having a hard time getting back into training shape. However I do need to step it up quickly as I have the NYC Marathon in just a little more than a month. I was really bummed out to hear about the cancellation of IM Lake Tahoe and feel bad for friends and the other athletes that were ready to race. I almost ended up doing IM Tahoe and bailed at the end b/c of my China trip and am glad I did. I already had the 2012 NYC Marathon cancelled on me the day I arrived and it is the worst feeling. Adding 2 x 7 mile runs, 1 x 19 mile run and 2 drainer workouts
