"Had to" is probably the wrong choice of words - I made the call to take the actions. Having to stand in front of 100+ people on my team and own that decisions was tough, but if you can't take it, then you aren't ready to manage people. The only solace is that they were treated with dignity, received generous severance, have hard skills to be successful elsewhere and are entering a better job market. Still sucks and lots of anguish on my part.

I know where your coming from Joe. My job as a General Foremen often has me supervising a crew of 25 to 40 electricians at any given time. When the jobs wind down its my responsibility to tell grown men who have wives and children at home that they no longer have a job. Its never easy and after 6 years at this position it still weighs on me to lay people off. Its the nature of our business and an important part of our job to keep the jobs running efficiently.

Thanks. Appreciate the empathy.

Sorry to hear that. I fought the same thing last year and once it settled in my chest it stayed there for almost a month. Wishing you speedy recovery!!

It is pretty nice Dave, thanks for asking. Seriously though, we will pay dearly starting around May down here in Southeast Texas. Right now you guys are on the trainers and treadmills being held prisoner by all that nasty white stuff. We will have our turn on the treadmills from mid July to October when it becomes extremely HOT!! So hot that even an OWS will become uncomfortable through August and September. But until then I will enjoy our two weeks of spring!

Silver lining in the clouds though, we are vacationing in Maine this year to attend a family reunion during the second week of July and it will be a much welcomed break from the heat and humidity.

Adding in Saturday's 2 hr trainer ride and Sunday's Sufferfest Chrysalis - trainer/treadmill workout.

In terms of HIM training, I think this TR ride is the best I have seen in terms of training in that perfect sweet spot for the 56M ride. Very consistent pacing with the appropriate amount of stress to keep you close to fatigue.

http://www.trainerroad.com/cycling/rides/1681007-Golgotha

SF Chrysalis is another tough, but really cool brick training. 8' ride near threshold, :30 transition, 4' run @1%-3% incline with pacing between HM and 5k pacing. Repeat 4x. You need the bike and treadmill right next to each other. Only 66' long, but it kicks your really well.

Catching up from the weekend. Saturday started with an 8 AM group run. Some target HR intervals but overall easy due to the extreme cold conditions (negatives!). I went to the other extreme that afternoon, going for a swim at a local club that was raising money for the domestic violence shelter. They keep their water at 88 degrees, so that was a warm 50 minute workout. Saturday total = 1:50:00.

Sunday my tri club got together for swim, incorporating lots of drills with some distance. Sunday total = 1:00:00.

Today I hit the streets for a 50 minute run. I was going to stop at 48:12, when I hit 6 miles, but figured I run a tad bit more to pull me up to 50 even. Hoping to either get in the pool or on the bike today. My training plan hasn't had me on the trainer enough lately, and I think I need to do more to incorporate the bike. Anyways, after three days, I am adding 3:40:00.

I searched for a 1hr threshold ride today and did Gayley. It was only when I started into the first of 4- 8min@100FTP intervals that I realized that this was basically an FTP test. The first round went well so I bumped up the intensity by 2%, second set went fine, bumped it up by 2%. That also went fine so I did the last set at 106% and came through it just fine. It seems that my FTP has certainly increased. I snowboarded for 4 hours after that as well.

I learned one stark reality when I lived in Atlanta. The Southern Summer stinks as much as the Northern winter. Neither is pleasant to go outside, you really can't do anything you like. The only difference for me was I wanted to go outside in the Summer when I lived in the South and would quickly regret it. In the North I have no desire to go outside in the winter.

I forgot one thing, my pipes never froze in the South

50' run yesterday and with some knee pain today an easy 30' spin on the drainer. Wife and I were successful in getting into the Broad Street Run in Philly in May. Largest 10 miler in the country with 40,000 participants. We will be supporting challenged and wheelchair athletes so it should be even more fun.

Adding 30' Aero bar training ride. I started to trust them around turns today.....SLOW turns!!!

Bah! must be nice to be outside. With the windchill it was -40 here today.

We got another foot of snow here last night. I'm literally running out of places to pile snow. I've never seen a winter like this in the Boston area!

I agree completely James. I've lived in Maine and in Texas and have experienced both extremes as you have. The cold is just in your face, it flat out just hurts, but you are fully aware of it and can be prepared to handle it if you choose to go outside!! The heat down here is tricky and will sneak up on you if your not paying attention. The mornings can start off somewhat tolerable but can turn hot real fast! This reminds me of the fellow who passed away from heat stroke on the run portion of the triathlon I did last august. Sad story but we do need to listen to our bodies when in these extreme conditions!

Your training plan is a guide but you don’t blindly follow it. You shouldn’t know exactly what you are going to do until the day you are to do it.
