How do you feel in terms of recovery as well as your injuries?

That's not that crazy, assuming you recover well and are in good health and I hate the "dooo eeeet" stuff.  It gives you a little less than a month to keep your volume up and then taper down again.

Interestingly, I am feeling good.  I have/had a bit of soreness in my quads, but nothing that I didn't expect.  My foot also feels good--I am pretty sure it was an orthotics issue and I seem to have figured that out.  Cold is not totally better, but not progressing either.

Hows the new job?

AMAZING

Nice!  So cool when people get to live their dream!

^ This.  I can't remember the last time I hear someone describe their job as "AMAZING".  Too cool :)

Hey Gang,

I have a couple of questions.

1) How do you put the list of Manatees with the links on the front of your training log.  Many of you have this, and I would like to follow suit.

2) I would love to know what everyone's plans/goals are going into the off-season.  Some people have goals listed in the from part of their logs, but it would be nice to hear what people are reaching towards these days, if you don't mind sharing :)

My "A" race is November 10th.  After it I will re-evaluate, but will probably be more run focused.  I am planning a February 25k trail race and before that may do a December HM.  In March I may start a get faster program for all 3 sports, but we'll see.

What are your plans?

ETA:  i will also probably start back with TRX.

That's what I was thinking.  Not all of us are past our A races yet!

Ack, you know, that was really dumb of me.  I'm sorry guys.

I'll rephrase your question to what are my plans/goals for the winter.

After B2B, I plan to take a bit of time for recovery and then start a run focused block culminating in the Myrtle Beach Marathon in February.  Then I'll want to more serious about the bike so that I'm ready for spring riding.  The plans are all a bit loosey-goosey because I'm pretty focused on B2B right now.

Others have listed the following for their goals.

TJ - Run more.  Find another winter half marathon and then train for a Jun HIM. (Nearing 500 miles in 2013 which surpasses the running that she did in all of 2012!)
Chirs - Run.  Get faster.  Build a single speed.
Salty - Endurance and nutrition focus and then marathon training
Yanti - What is this off season that you speak of?
Melanie - Improve swimming, run more, ride outside each weekend, enjoy hockey and TKD, dump some plump.
Ann-Marie - Re-evaluate after Rev3 Venice but likely more run focus including a half marathon in December and a 25k in February.  Also TRX.
Judi - Finish marathon training (and the marathon) and then get back to the gym to strength train regularly, complete a winter bike plan, rebuild run speed, swim regularly.
Monica - Continue to work with Josh the trainer, run through the winter (possibly inclucing some races), swim regularly and possibly join a masters group, bike
Ben - get faster

What about you, Switch?

Super awesome compilation--you freakin rock.  B2B and Myrtle Beach Marathon are two big races. Do you go into these with specific time goals, or do you let the day surprise you?  Is your volume always what it is, even when your not training for the full distance, or do you kinda always have something big going on?  I'm realizing I don't know your racing history :)

My volume varies depending on what's going on.  No, I do not do 15-20 hour training weeks when I am not training full IM!  I'm no Ben or Salty!

I'm realizing I don't know your racing history

The past few years I've had two A races -- a marathon early in the year and an IM later in the year.  I think that it's easier to run through the winter than ride through it and I like riding in the summer a lot more than running in the heat.

And you still have not answered my question - What about you, Switch?

Originally posted by switch OK, I want you to think of a training specific goal.  Try to make it specific--something we can try to encourage you towards

Your build-a-bike goal is AWESOME, btw.  I love this so much!  Maybe we could attempt this at the same time--ooooh--maybe we could set up a challenge!!!  I totally want to do this.  You know who could help us if we got stuck (I'm sure a ton of people, actually), but Moondawg14 (Ryan) is AWESOME at this kind of thing.  He's totally holding my hand as I attempt to tear apart my washing machine.

My LBS will be helping with my build. I will NOT do a time challenge on it, as it will take me a while to complete. I am working slooooow on it, probably undoing and redoing multiple parts of it.  I like to have multiple objectives to a project, ie I need a bike, I need to save money, and I'd like to learn to wrench a bike. Multiple reasons to build a bike = WINNER! However, I do hope the finished product looks gnarly cool, but that'll be judged upon finish, if you want in on that.

Training wise, I am probably going to work on running intensity this winter. I have a few races that I am signed up for and I'd like to set some goals that will push me a bit. That combined with many of you giving me heck about Master's swimming, so that might go on the list.

I'm kind of in the same boat as Ben. I want to get faster.  I went out on a limb in COJ a few weeks ago and laid out some pretty specific goals, but in thinking about goal setting more, I'm not sure that's how I should be framing things in my mind.  What I said it COJ is that I would like to qualify for Worlds in both the Oly and 70.3 distances (I have specific goal times for these in my head, though others have cautioned me against this.  I can't help it.) and qualify for Boston.

Any one of those things would be a significant "reach" for me, but all three would be a coup. I am turning 40 next year, mid life crisis, party of one...

In thinking about these goals more, I am thinking I should reframe them a bit, as I could have good tri races for me, but still not qualify, depending on who shows up.  It would be silly to be bent out of shape about that.  So, I'm going to try to get faster, and hopefully that will result in me placing well in my races--aging up won't hurt either;)

To do this I need to do a few things:

  • Be consistent in all three sports.
  • Be very careful about doing non SBR things that build lean body mass.
  • Be careful with my diet and see where my body weight gravitates while properly fueling for training but not over indulging.  I "think" I would be faster if I could lose 10lbs, but I have never been that light in my adult life and I don't know if that's realistic.  I probably need to do better meal and snack planning to support this goal.
  • I need to be better about my sleep.  I need to make this a priority for recovery, sickness prevention, and stress reduction.
  • I need to remember to have a purpose for each training session.  Salty, this was such a gift you gave me.  Thank you. xo.
  • Try to do these things while minimizing the impact on my family.

1) How do you put the list of Manatees with the links on the front of your training log.  Many of you have this, and I would like to follow suit.

1) Yeah, Janyne rocks.  I just told her that earlier this morning

2)

  • Improve my swimming; hoping the masters program I'm doing will help with that.
  • If it isn't too taxing on my brain/schedule/wallet, I may see a guy about learning to run better.
  • Try to bike outside most weekends (could be tough with hockey).  Otherwise, time on the trainer periodically.
  • Dump some plump
  • Take part in the other sports I enjoy that take a bit of a backseat to tri: Tae Kwon Do and of course it is now ice hockey season!
  • Scatter a few running races throughout the winter just to have fun.  Wait, that's really the only reason I do any of this stuff!

OK, this is a list!  I love that you've thrown yourself into Masters swimming.  I think you'll be blown away by these gains.  Say more about your biking goals-what are you hoping to do with the long rides outside?  As Salty would ask, what is the purpose?

I didn't know you were such a big hockey player.  Damn, there are a lot of hockey playing Manatees!

Dump some plump?  LOL, that's funny.  How many of us are looking to lose a little bit over the winter?  Anyone else?

Yup, I'm a, well, currently THE goalie for a women's team.  Our first game is Oct. 19, woooo!

My biking goals are pretty unspecific over the winter, mainly keep some base and if I pick up any speed or whatever over the winter, great!  The 'getting outside' goal is to make use of the cold weather gear I own.  Biking is my 'best' of the 3 tri disciplines so I like to try to keep it that way.  Most of my bike time I imagine will be on the trainer using TrainerRoad.

edited to strike out the push for Switch to respond...she did as I was typing

#1 - I just look at Jaynee's

#2 - After Oct 27th (which has turned into my A race since Galveston I was injured) I plan to take the month of November off. When I say off I mean cut workouts to probably 5 hours a week just maintaining base. My wife and I hopefully will spend a week in Playa Del Carmen then in December I will start base building for Ironman Texas (my first full) in May 2014. Since I don't have the base for a full I will be mainly base building this winter.

I really like that you went into the bullet points on how you are going to do this. I thik diet/weight/sleep/consistency are fantastic overarching pieces but I do wonder though, about specific goals within the sports like, for example, running: increase endurance (or whatever you believe your weaknesses/thing to build on to be)

I don't love goals like "worlds" because you don't have a ton of control over the "who shows up" variable but I think your little things to do might make it ok? I dunno. Maybe that is even personal.

Ah, another one who's A race I overlooked--I'm sorry.  Good luck on the 27th! Building for your first full is a big deal Do you have a plan picked out? Do you anticipate any part of building that base being particularly challenging?

So, I'm going to try to get faster, and hopefully that will result in me placing well in my races--aging up won't hurt either

I think it was in the Ryan Hall section that Daniels spoke of this a little bit (I've seen it elsewhere too, but we have that one in common). And it was that idea of looking more at the process instead of things like World Champion. It's ok to want things like that, but still put more into the process of training and getting the most out of yourself.

OK, this is a whole lotta info that no one needs to read, but putting it out there does seem to help me with accountability, so thanks guys :)

Yes, within each discipline I have specific goals.  Endurance is definitely going to be key for the run, and building it without injury is going to present the biggest challenge.  I had originally been planning on ticking that goal off this fall, but with my leg thing, I am letting that go.  My new idea is a race in February.  I'm going to go look into Janyne's Myrtle Beach marathon actually...

A BQ should support a good run in a HIM and Oly, but the training, as you know, is quite different.  I'm planning on writing up my plan for the JD group to dissect;) I think on a flat course, I should be able to 3:3xish, while still training swim and bike.  If I could drop 30 s/m off my HIM and Oly runs from this past season I would be ecstatic.  If I work on both my running and biking, this will happen. TrainerRoad and I are going to have an intimate relationship.

My biking is actually where I think I can make the biggest gains.  I haven't done real serious training on the bike yet.  Not having a brake rub in my next oly would be awesome too.  As would not being hung over;) (<--this may or may not be another thing I need to work on)

I think if I can do a swim focus (which I'm in now), and then maintain those gains with 3x/week with a masters group come January, I will be sitting pretty for the race season. I would like to be hitting low 1:3x in my HIM OWS.

Yes, I need to spend some more time thinking about it like this.  Really, that should "feel" better to me, as I have control over it, and not over the other :)

I'd like to actually LOVE to not give two-chits about the other part, but the type A person in me can't let that go.

Hey Gang,

I have a couple of questions.

1) How do you put the list of Manatees with the links on the front of your training log.  Many of you have this, and I would like to follow suit.

2) I would love to know what everyone's plans/goals are going into the off-season.  Some people have goals listed in the from part of their logs, but it would be nice to hear what people are reaching towards these days, if you don't mind sharing

1) Definitely copy & paste Janyne's - she's awesome about keeping everything correct and up to date for us Manatees!

2)

  • I'll be keeping my sessions with JTTD, as well as adding a weekly class that he teaches for a core group of long distance triathlon peoples that will be a mix of strength/intensity/cross-training/crossfit stuff but also make it kind of competitive within the class.
  • as running is BY FAR my weakest out of the three, I'd like to sign up for some races over the winter to make sure that I don't get all lax about running and then have to start from scratch (again) when trying to ramp up for next season
  • keep swimming and maybe start going to the masters sessions at the gym
  • bike when I can, but NO MORE 6 hour sessions on the drainer!
  • try not to gain too much fluff once B2B is over... most likely easier said than done with that last one...

Nice list

OK, so what can we do to help you with your run, my friend?  Is there a fun winter race you could pick out--maybe in a cool destination--that would help you stay motivated?

Masters seems like it produces serious gains for the people who join.  Is there a reason you don't want to do it?  (I really want to join, but my schedule isn't jiving with it right now, I'm hoping I can make that change by January, if not before).

No one should ever, EVER, do a six hour session on the drainer.  *shudder*

So you're in the watching the fluff group too?  OK, I think those of us in this group can help each other with that

If someone could run FOR me, that would be a good place to start.

Okay, okay - I'll do all the hard work myself.  JTTD actually called me 'freakishly tough' today, which I guess was a complement?   In all honesty, I don't know what I can do to get better.  There seems to be a hard limit as to what my reconstructed knee and effed up back can handle when it comes to running.  If I could run pain-free, I might like it more. As for races... we'll see what I can register for.  At the very least, there's a HM in March in Chicago that I can sign up for.

Hon, I'm ALWAYS in the fluff watching group!

Masters will likely happen, I just need to commit to going early Monday mornings once B2B is over.  I should add that I'd really like to see an improvement in my bike times next year.  I feel like I'm on the cusp of being able to make some nice gains, and I'd like to see that happen.  More training on hills and getting a stronger engine in the off season will hopefully help that.

Judi,

Did you ever get ideas about solid food to eat during your long runs?  I have been thinking about you but I didn't respond because I can easily do solid food on the bike but not so much on the run.  Well, not in an open marathon at least  When have done IM marathons I've had pretzels, flat cola, chicken broth, Clif Shot Blocks, peaches (at Vineman) -- basically what sounded good at the time.

What have others had success with (when gels don't do it for you)?

I've used star bursts and mini tootsie rolls during marathons.

I am in paradise! I have a 2 day seminar starting tomorrow on lido beach ( just north of where Chris lives). Hotel is right in the gulf and has 2 pools and a tiki bar. Got here about 3, checked in and immediately put on my suit and jumped in the gulf for a little OWS. The life guards are flying flags indicating the sting rays are out, so had to do the sting ray shuffle. I didn't see. My, but others said they were all around. Just got puffed and powdered after the swim and am about to head to the tiki bar for happy hour. It's a tough life, but I do what I can,

I'm at the tiki bar now watching the sun get lower, drinking an adult beverage and already rocking the beach bum look ( slightly burned cheeks, sun bleaching hair and flip flops). Too bad I'm only here with work people.

It will be boring until I slip out to go to the water . After the seminar there is a cocktail party ( dress is shorts, t- shirts and flip flops) and then I will be taken out to dinner by some of the outside attorneys the agency uses from time to time. Before it begins tomorrow and Friday, I will go for a run on and around the beach. Don't be haters
