Subject: RE: C'mon, was 80s music REALLY that bad?Long a hater of 80s music, I finally realized I was just listening to the wrong 80s music. Here's a list of records that converted me because A ) the songwriting from beginning to end on these albums is great no matter what era they were recorded, and B ) each record is a leap forward in terms of what pop music is capable of doing (yes, the list is very similar to the bear's, and likely many others ):
Elvis Costello/Imperial Bedroom (1984 )
Bruce Springsteen/Nebraska (1982 )
Joy Division/Closer (1980 )
R.E.M/Reckoning (1984 )
New Order/Power, Corruption & Lies (1983 )
Tom Waits/Rain Dogs (1985 )
Talking Heads/Remain in Light (1980 )
The Smiths/The Queen is Dead (1986 )
U2/The Joshua Tree (1987 )
The Cure/Disintegration (1989 )
Prince/Purple Rain (1984 )
The influence of 80s music on current trends in pop music cannot be overstated. Listen to Pains of Being Pure at Heart, M83, Vampire Weekend, The Killers and many others, and you'll hear the next 2-3 years of what's coming to the radio. |
