I'm going to throw 2 weekends out there (as I'm sure there will be different groups heading out on different weekends as we all have differeing schedules)

June 12, 13, 14th or...
June 19, 20, 21st

*my* plan would likely be to swim the course Friday evening around dinner, then Ride 1 loop on Saturday as well as run 1 loop.

Then Sunday I would probably ride 2 loops of the bike course.

Let me know your interest levels.... my weekends are scheduled very far in advance because of work, so if different weekends work for you personally, then that is fine

Hoping that there could be get togethers.... ie; dinner or lunch. Feel free to chime in.

Hey - i vote for Jun 20 weekend.  A group that I train with locally is planning a trek up there that weekend.

I'd like to be added to the list. I only live 40min from LP so I can make any weekend work. Rather new to tri's but will hopefully have ridden/ran the loops multiple times by then.

Fred....is Eagleman 6/14?

As of now I can do the 6/19-21 weekend.

I'd vote for 6/12-6/14.

Also, Team Placid Planet has their Wilmington-Whiteface road race on 6/20.

I have my kids the weekend of the 20th-21st, and will be in LP the weekend of the 13th-14th.  Maybe we'll end up having two groups... Eagleman and non-Eagleman people.

My tentative weekend plan is to swim Friday afternoon/evening, 112 on Saturday, 13.1 on Sunday.  And perhaps another swim on Sat or Sun.

I'm a rookie at this so sorry if this doesn't work right. I have just recently decided I was going to do IMLP in 09' and I'm starting my 24 week program soon (I'm getting a slot at Florida 70.3 for IMLP).

Anyways, I was wondering if I could get some advice. I've got a tri bike and a road bike, of course my tri bike is a lot nicer of the two. It seems like there is not much time spent in the aero position due to the Mt's on this coarse. What do you guys think about using a road bike instead of tri bike on this coarse?

Thanks,

I think a lot of it depends on what you are used to.  Last year there was a pretty even mix of both.  My better bike and the one I ride the most is my tri bike.  I wouldn't guess the percentage I spent in aero versus up on the bars, but I wouldn't hesitate to bring my tri bike again and I am planning on doing so.  Even with the rain last year forcing me up on the brakes more than I would have liked, I still think I was better off with my tri bike.  There are plenty of miles where it is relatively flat and a lot of the smaller gradual climbs I am fine on the aero bars.

According to last years' race flyer, the road race route does *not* conflict with the IM course.  Here is an excerpt from part of the race notes....

*Note: Haselton Road (the continuation of Springfield Road on the north side of Rt. 86)

is part of the Lake Placid Ironman bike course and is EXTREMELY popular with

LARGE GROUPS of triathletes, especially now, on a Saturday a few weeks before the

Ironman. Multiple "pelotons" of triathletes, many in their aero-bars, will probably be

coming through. Therefore we ask that you do not use that area for your warmup.

I haven't been able to find a map of the course, but it doesn't seem like it will be a significant problem.

Lake Placid is an aero course. The hill climbs are mainly long, but not steep. I would suggest a tri bike, but some of this depends on your comfort and cycling level. Lake Placid is not like Black Bear or other tough 'grade' hill climbs, and gets the rep for being more hilly than it truly is.

Conservative estimate is about 6,000' total elevation gain for the 2 loops. But Even this figure is mis-leading, as not all hills are created equal. Many of the hills at Black Bear are steeper and have you turning sharply just before the climb, so as to kill momentum.

Nothing wrong with a road bike, but there are more than ample times to be aero on the LP course.

Newleaf... looks like you are right, as there will likely be a number of different training weekends. June 20th weekend looks about right for me. I guess that Placid Planet race is on, but my guess is that won't take the whole weekend... probably a few hours.

Thank you,
I have been torn on what bike to use. I have a Cervelo R3 and a Fuji CF1 Tri bike. Looks like I will use the Cervelo for Black Bear (my 2nd 70.3, LP warmup). And the Tri bike at LP, with that being said....please add me to the List

Thanks for the input, looks like I'll be starting the training with the tri bike. I would prefer to use my tri bike anyway.

I plan on doing "Black Bear 70.3".  I did the sprint last year and it is a great race, yet challenging.  I road my road bike with short clip-ons.  It worked well for me...

As for IMLP, I road one loop of the course last year on my Cervelo P2 (Tri Bike) and was able to get aero for a good majority of the course.  As stated above, the hills are long, but not too steep.  I would say that the last 14 miles of each loop are the toughest.

Good luck with the training...

It is not.

An easy way to find out if it is sold out or not, is to go to the race website and see if it says "Sold Out"

I'm doing Black Bear myself. Haven't signed up yet - trying to hold onto my cash as long as possible. I wish Lin-Mark would let you see the current entrants list. They do for the other races.

I just saw this thread...I've been dealing with a hectic move/no computer/hibernation from triathlons. I'm in for IMLP this year. Just started training with my coach. I plan to do a training weekend in LP with him already, not sure when that is yet, hopefully it will coincide with you guys.

Last I heard, Black Bear is about 60% full.

I know LP has more of a reputation for hills than it really is, but nonetheless, is anyone modifying their training to include more hill work? Right now, my plan only calls for simple zone 2 stuff - but I'm throwing in more hills just so I get my legs ready.
