Spokes - 2009-02-26 10:38 PM Except for Rush, some New Wave, and a small amount of hair bands, the 80s completely blew azz for music.

So then "blew azz" in your vernacular is a good thing? You know, as opposed to Rush...

Dude, Rush=Chum in your vernacular. I post the word in reference to music, and its like tossing bloody hamburger in the water - you show up within 2 minutes like a shark. Cool

Actually, it works for all things suckage. It's just that Rush tops the suckage list.

Maybe so in YOUR universe but I'm honestly curious - besides Rush, who's the Top 10 on your suckage list?

Well, maybe they don't top the suckage list on merit alone, I'll give them credit for being a third or fourth tier band, certainly not the end all and be all that their terribly misguided fans would have you believe. I'd rank them somewhere behind Aerosmith and G'n'R, limited success, completely overrated, fairly lengthy careers, but God knows why...

Off the top of my head, others on the suckage list in no particular order: Kansas, Asia, Creed, Three Doors Down, Celine Dion, Shania Twain, Limp Bizkit, Kiss, America, Styx...

Man, I could go on forever, but so much carp spread over so many genres it's difficult to focus.

If it was played on the radio in the 1980's last 35 years it sucked.

Fixed.

Radio sucks.

Edited.

I <3 Pandora

Last.fm is much, much better. After about 45 minutes Pandora starts to play more and more indie music that isn't really relevant to what I programmed the station with and that no one's ever heard of. And the fact is that a lot of indie music is obscure for good reason: it's terrible. Last.fm seems to have been programmed at least in part by actual people whereas Pandora's programming is based on characteristics of the music that take into account everything but the art. It's like trying to analyze poetry by counting and analyzing the distinct words.

As to all or most of the music from any era being "bad":

Every era/style of music is an overreaction to that which immediately preceded it. This applies as much to 18th century classical music as it does to western popular music of the past few decades. It comes down to this for me: 90% of the overall output in any art form isn't very good. Of the remaining 10%,  half is barely acceptable and at most, maybe 1% is really good.

While most of the output of any art form isn't really worth listening to/viewing/reading, it's always worth the effort to create it.

It's not so much about an era as it is the notion of the least common denominator. Radio is all center and no edge. It's a predictable, homoginized commodity. The dial is pretty much the same anywhere in the country (the knuckle-dragging "classic rock" station, the "office music" station, the "kddie pop station" Progress always starts on the edges, the center has to  try to catch up. It never does. I have not tried Last.fm, but it sounds like something worth looking into.

Long a hater of 80s music, I finally realized I was just listening to the wrong 80s music. Here's a list of records that converted me because A) the songwriting from beginning to end on these albums is great no matter what era they were recorded, and B) each record is a leap forward in terms of what pop music is capable of doing (yes, the list is very similar to the bear's, and likely many others):

Elvis Costello/Imperial Bedroom (1984)
Bruce Springsteen/Nebraska (1982)
Joy Division/Closer (1980)
R.E.M/Reckoning (1984)
New Order/Power, Corruption & Lies (1983)
Tom Waits/Rain Dogs (1985)
Talking Heads/Remain in Light (1980)
The Smiths/The Queen is Dead (1986)
U2/The Joshua Tree (1987)
The Cure/Disintegration (1989)
Prince/Purple Rain (1984)

The influence of 80s music on current trends in pop music cannot be overstated. Listen to Pains of Being Pure at Heart, M83, Vampire Weekend, The Killers and many others, and you'll hear the next 2-3 years of what's coming to the radio.

I'd say throw in post-Gabriel Genesis too, but someone always quotes American Psycho when I do that.

Double that number. I would gladly put together a Journey and Boston album burning event somewhere.

I usually dont get into music or religious decisions. And why I broke this rule now, God only knows (heheheh, get it)....

For me, almost anything played on commercial radio sux. It only got worse when Clearchannel took over the air ways.

Anyway, for a few years I have been enjoying the songs that are sung by the songwriters:

Lucinda Williams (just saw her live, excellent show)

Ryan Adams (NOT bryan)

David Grey

Richard Buckner

Casey Chambers

and lots more...

I just got home from a Tanglefoot show. Not a rock band by any stretch, but a great Canadian  band nonetheless.

Wow - it's been over 20 years since I've seen Headpins mentioned. A friend in high school was a huge fan, along with Chiliwack and Loverboy. They be "suckage" but those Canadian names made some great tunes.
