Sometimes I wonder why our legs can't understand that they have to recover faster then that :p |

I can typically do 25-30 or so miles in a trip, I don't really call that a long ride, it's my regular training ride. I get in one short off the bike break, usually to pee and also just stretch, maybe munch on a treat. I typically get my nutrition and hydrate while riding. When y'all get into longer rides, how often do you stop? I see people talking about 50 milers + and wonder are folks stopping once, twice, getting lunch? Are they quick stops, long rests? So I am curious what is a long day ride is for you and how do you handle food, and how often do you stop (rests, breaks, to use the john?) I want to start doing some longer rides when my school schedule clears up and just was wondering what folks did. Personally I only stop about once during a long ride (50-60 miles). I'll stretch the legs, eat a little bit, and pee in a cornfield if I have to. I usually try and consume just liquid calories while I'm riding and save the eating for my break. IMO, I don't think its a bad idea to take more frequent or longer breaks if that suits you better. Really, unless you are doing a time trial or something the breaks shouldn't matter too much |

Pro 4343 Olney, MD | Subject: RE: Powerpuff Girls 2 - Double the Power, Double the Fun I've done several 40 milers a few 50 milers and one metric century. I consider these as endurance rides where speed and overall time is not too important. On the supported rides there will typically be a rest stop every 12-18 miles and I generally will stop at them all. On my own I usually keep a similar schedule. My stops tend to be fairly short: bio-break, snack, stretch and go. I find if I stop too long I tighten up too much. blujay65 - 2009-04-22 8:12 AM I have a bike question for folks- especially for anyone who does over 40 milers. From my log: 2h 33m 05s 42.00 miles 16.46 Mi/hr So much for an easy ride with the wind at my back. The wind blew in my face or at my side the entire ride. I was anticipating two hard climbs on this ride, but I forgot about one. The second climb is a double, first a really mean climb, then a plunge back into the valley bottom, then climb back out again. Thought I might have to walk part of it, but I made it! All things considered, I should be happy with my speed, but I'm disappointed. Wow! I think that looks like a great speed for having to deal with headwinds and hills. Great job! |

Thanks, Robin. I was disappointed because I wanted it to be a nice, long, easy ride; instead I had to work the whole time. Glad you are feeling well! |

I haven't needed a potty break, even on a 50-mile ride. |

I want to start doing some longer rides when my school schedule clears up and just was wondering what folks did. When I first started doing longer rides (in the 50+ range), I usually had to stop at least once, sometimes twice, to just get off the bike. These days, I have no problem going 50-60 miles with no stopping. At IMFL, my first stop wasn't until special needs around 50 miles. After that I had a couple of brief stops to refill my water bottle (tech difficulties with the on-the-fly refills) and once to pop a couple of Tylenol (for some reason, I couldn't dig them out of my pouch). For calories, I usually fill up one water bottle with Endurox and then a flask or two of Hammer Gel. I might stuff something special in my back pocket. On training rides in excess of 60 miles, I do usually have to stop to refill and restock, at least once. I hate carrying too much with me. |
