Awesome... how did it go? Uhh, not so good. Long story short, it was 28 degrees and snowing at the start and the trails were completely flooded, with half a dozen sections that had 12" - 36" of deep freezing cold water for 50+ yards at a time that you had to wade through on a 2 loop course. And nowhere on their site or on their FB page did they accurately describe the trail conditions that existed throughout the week leading up to the race, so I was totally unprepared for that. I dropped after one loop because I couldn't feel my feet for the last 1.5 hours, I was shaking uncontrollably from the cold, and I thought I'd either end up with frostbite or hypothermia or both. Two words: it sucked. The following Monday, I ran a self-supported 50k on these amazing trails in Delaware and had a bazillion times more fun, and I'm doing a 50k trail race this coming Saturday in Grand Rapids, so that should be cool. This is the 50k female winner. Her face says it all: |

Whoa!! that looks nasty indeed... I can only imagine and you were right to drop. No race is worth putting your health or legs in danger.. hypothermia is very nasty business.. Hopefully the GrandRapids 50K has better footing and weather too.. good luck, let us know how you do. |

Elite 3002 HURRICANE, Utah | Subject: RE: who is doing an ultra this weekend? need a little advice please.....my first ultra is this Saturday a 50K trail run which I have not been able to train trials just fire roads. I got into this 50k kinda on accident as a training run for the 50 miler I am doing in April. My question is what to do run wise this week? I had to take yesterday off due to traveling 10 hours in the car but i managed my runs while on vacation...wasnt hard considering it was at Wrightville Beach and beautiful and Im from Ohio I didnt get out there today as Mon and Fri are off days and just had way to much to do with just getting home late last night and being the end of the year for my business and getting reports etc together yadda yadda. Friday I do teach spin class and my plan is to not teach teach....tell them what to do and coach them while I easy spin to keep my legs fresh. Mileage wise for Tues Wed and Thursday what do you recommend? Please take a look at my blog to see where I am right now and what my "plan" is calling for.....remember my plan is set up for a 50 mile run in APril. Thanks...hopefully my rambling on about stuff didnt confuse anyone I have a little ADD and havent ran since Saturday! LOL |

Thanks...hopefully my rambling on about stuff didnt confuse anyone I have a little ADD and havent ran since Saturday! LOL One idea: Pfitzinger, in Advanced Marathoning, recommends a 20-40-60% reduction in mileage for a 3 week taper, with the 60% of peak mileage being race week. So if you peaked at 57 miles, then you'd run 23 miles in the days leading up to the race. Given that you didn't run Monday and the race is Saturday, I'd bring that number down a bit, say, 8mi Tues, 6mi Wed, 4mi Thu, EZ spin Fri = 18mi prerace. I followed this taper plan for Chicago marathon and felt really fresh on race day. I too have a 50k race this Saturday but didn't want it to interrupt my training for bigger goals too much, so I'm just doing 60% of peak mileage this week, rather than a full 2-3 week taper. An experiment of one, right? GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN! |

Elite 3002 HURRICANE, Utah | Subject: RE: who is doing an ultra this weekend? starting to get a little anxious...dont feel nervous just anxious of the "unknown" I have 3 pairs of running shoes packed just in case case. Weather is calling for upper 40's now so unsure what to even wear! Packed a short sleeve tech shirt with a loose fitting long sleeve then a light weight water resistant jacket that I may not even use in the am depending on how it feels at 8am. Its 2 loops so after 15 ish miles you can have access to your car to drop off and get supplies or you can put a drop bag at the same location....Im thinking about using the car as a drop bag. Any last minute advice? Oh this is gonna hurt LOL but i have a massage scheduled for Monday at 2:30 |

I don't want you to feel "cheated" if it's not quite as bad as you thought . Take the opportunity to revel in how lucky we are to be able to run. As far as clothes, I think the short sleeve tech with long sleeve on top sounds good and you can always tie it around your waist if needed and I'd only use the jacket if there's any chance of rain and you can carry it easily (camelbak etc.). And that's from someone who hates to get cold. |

I originally signed up for the 25 but decided to go for 50. This will be my first ultra.... i'm excited but a bit nervous! That looks like a great race. Course has a bunch of 200'-300' climbs right at the start, so I'd say don't blow your legs out too early, those will come back to haunt at the end. Ooh, and for a kicker there's a long slow climb from miles 26 - 29 that should be, uh, SUPER FUN Downhill for the last 2 miles. Really cool looking course. Pretty big cash prizes for top-3 OA, and it's part of the Montrail Ultra Cup series, so the top of the field should be super fast. Have a great time! |

Elite 3002 HURRICANE, Utah | Subject: RE: who is doing an ultra this weekend? posted a photo album and will try to right a race report tomorrow...Im speechless tonight but in a good way! Got home after no shower and a muddy mess but all I could do is let my OCD take over and mop my new tile floor so I could put things back in order then wash the smelly muddy clothes so I wouldnt have to take care of that in the am....I feel much better then I ever dreamed of and wish I knew what the elevation was. My garmin died at just over mile 28 and up to there in my communitor it tells me we ascented as 14,711 feet and descent as14236.Guess I could break it down by the first 15.8 miles then double it? All I know it was crazy mountains lots of mud and a freaking blast!! On the second loop I did some video commentary cause i didnt have anyone to talk to till I ran into John and we hung and talked for the last 10 or so miles I think. I do have the video's uploaded on FB they are kinda fun....name on Facebook if you are on and wanna take a peak is Jennifer Hatcher....photo is of me in a dark blue dress. |

Master 1883 San Antone, Texas | Subject: RE: who is doing an ultra this weekend? All I can say is WOW. I just had the best time of my life at Bandera. I'm totally hooked on ultras now. I may even put triathlon on the back burner, or at least not as much of an emphasis. Trail running is where its at! I'm pretty sore today, but I can't wait to get back out there. Bandera was beautiful, and the hills were KILLER. Which makes me feel even that more bad! |

Welcome to the dark side.. it is awesome over here.. I did my first ultra and I was hooked, since then I only do ONE triathlon a year just to get it out of my system, this year I will do IM Arizona, but the rest of the time is ULTRAS and trail running baby. It is easier, and a lot cheaper.. I got selected to run Western States 100 this year so I am STOKED.... Don't hang the cleats, but definitely give your running shoes a chance to make yourself awesomer!! |

Elite 3002 HURRICANE, Utah | Subject: RE: who is doing an ultra this weekend? The 50k in the mountains of WV was easier then that! Hell all 3 ironmans were easier. What an experience and will write a race report when I get home. I don't have any desire to do anything longer then 15 miles on a cold dark muddy trail in the nighttime ever again! I have never quit anything I set out to do and each lap I actually "thought" about it on this one. |

I feel a bit underprepared and to make things worse my IT Band has been acting up a bit (think I need new shoes, 350 miles on my current pair, so I ordered some) and now I feel congested and all worn out... just the normal jitters before a big race me thinks! Time to get my head in the game |

It also helped that we had the most fabulous and mild winter in the history of Kansas. Race week is finally here. I'm ready. |
