Master 1661 Newbury Park, CA | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread mdfahy - 2010-08-04 6:45 PM Question: I heard the swim is very cold and you should use neoprene caps and socks? What are your thoughts on that? The water temp always seems to be the hot topic up to race day; reports of low to mid 50 water temps weeks before but by race day it warms up some and most people think it wasn't that bad. There are certainly many people that wear neoprene caps but most do not. I can't really recall seeing anyone wearing neoprene socks though. If you are going to agonize over wearing a neoprene cap for months you can go ahead and buy one and try it out the day or two before the race. I spent hours (days, months) looking at one on the Internet only to decide to buy it the week before the race and it didn't show up in time. It turned out I didn't need it but I have used it for the Cali 70.3 swim ever since. When the gun goes off the water temp is quickly forgotten; it's those 8500 thrashing arms and legs that are the problem. |

Bothell, Washington | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread This year the water temp was pretty cold early in the week but warmed up nicely by race morning. Adrenaline? I think a neoprene cap would be nice to conserve energy and protect cold water from the ears but with all the people around, temperature was the last thing on my mind. After looking at pictures of my T1, I noticed my face/arms were quite red from being exposed to the water. I was one of the few that wore a sleeveless but I was fine. I brought my long sleeve and even practiced in it early in the week and decided against it. |

Master 5557 , California | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread The water takes your breath away going in but I was ok after that (full wetsuit, no neoprene cap or booties). Make sure you get your head underwater and warm up for a few minutes prior to the start and you'll be fine. |

Veteran 526 Richmond | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Thanks, my neighbor mentioned the water temps were cold here and made it sound like a big deal. He has a neoprene cap that he said I could borrow. I probably won't buy the booties though, maybe I'll add the Polar Plunge in Virginia Beach to my training calendar to experience really cold water!! Ha! |

Ha! I've done the swim twice in a sleeveless and a neoprene cap. As others have mentioned, once you get in the water you will be fine. If you are really worried about water temps, the early season race in Lake Anna is typically about the same temp as CdA typically is on race day. If you end up doing any training down my way, let me know! See you next June at the latest! |

Veteran 526 Richmond | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Hey Doug, I would love to train sometime. I was thinking of going out to Charlottesville to catch some hills, but need to find the time to do that. Headed to OBX this weekend. I think I will sign up for Kinetic Half, which is 6 weeks before IMCDA as prep. I did Rumpus in Bumpass last year, may do that again next year too. I was fine with the water temp for that one in a full wetsuit, but the waves set me back a bit, it was my first OWS. |

Master 5557 , California | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread The other thing about CdA is lots of people swim out in the lake during the couple days prior to the race. So you could do that for a half hour or so and evaluate how you feel before you decide what to wear for race day. |

Expert 1207 Liberty Lake, WA | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread I've spent the last week near Kona without my computer. I was cool to come back and find that our group has more than doubled in the last week. I'm feeling rested and ready to start training for a few fall marathons. |

Champion 10618 | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread I talked to Evan yesterday, and she said it was at 85%. So, you and how-many-others signed up yesterday to bump it up by that 1% to 86%? She also said it would likely fill within a month -- although yesterday's growth spurt suggests more like two weeks! And just as an added bit of info, she thought St. George was at 70%, although she was quick to add that SG is not her race. |

So, you and how-many-others signed up yesterday to bump it up by that 1% to 86%? Not me, I've been signed up since Monday night after the race, I was checking for one of the guys I coach. I believe he is one of them, and I have yet 1 more probably signing up this week. I don't see it open much longer. If it by some miracle is open on 9/13, when IM Moo sells out, it'll be closed quick. |

Had to back out of IM Wisconsin this week due to two broken ribs from a training accident last week. On the mend and will be fired up to get back to training and very much looking forward to the race. Just want to get to the start line this time. |

New user 4 Coeur d Alene, Idaho | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Lots of us locals and people coming into town for Ironman CDA get together in the mornings and swim in the lake right where the start is. Many of us know several 1.2 mile swims along the shore to get you used to the lake. |

Expert 839 Portland, OR | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread I'm in again too - this will be IM CDA #3 for me and I'm excited to see that many of my virtual training buddies from 2007 and 2008 are back and we have lots of first timers as well I used the BT 20 week plan both years and just added some time to the long bikes and they worked awesome! For MrWrite - definitely do a 1/2 IM if you've never done one before. Racing long distance is very different and you'll develop some key knowledge and experience. I've heard Rage is a ridiculously hard race so my vote would be for Oceanside. Like T said, the most amazing and helpful thing throughout both of my previous IMs has been the BT community. Checking in on everyone's training, posting questions, calming nerves, cheering each other on in early season events and finally meeting up during race week. One thing I did in both 07 and 08 and I'll be repeating is doing my final peak weekend of training on the course over Memorial Day weekend. I'll head up to CDA Friday and ride the whole course Sat with a short transition run and then Sunday I'll run the CDA 1/2 Marathon. It's always a great time and if you've never been to CDA it's a good race check on the course just shy of 1 month out from race day. Feel free to check out my blog: speedleopard.com as I chronicled tons of info about the course and the race and training camp etc during both years. Have fun during the next few months, January will be here before you know it - so put some time and energy in the bank with the family and friends as you'll need to draw down that account once April and May roll around |

Expert 1006 Kansas City, MO | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Holy crap, what is our count at for people doing the race in 2011?? Anyone know? Also, my wife and I competed in 2010 IMCDA and I am going back for 2011. However, the wife is embarking on a run at qualifying for the Boston Marathon. That said we will be in Chicago over the weekend of October 10th, any of you competing in the Chicago Marathon this year....? Happy Training! |

Master 1759 Byhalia, Mississippi | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread So with the dam breaking and draining Tempe town lake in Arizona the 1/2 I was going to do is now out (they still think IMAZ will be ok with the new dam and a November lake fill) and I do not think I will do the Boise 1/2 again - so I have to rework my "C" and "D" races to prep for IMCDA better. I guess I really will have to do a few more Mary's and try an Ultra. My biggest weakness is the run with only a "survivor" level swim. In all it gives me the opportunity to get my money's worth out of a course by staying out there a bit longer than most of you. However, I "plan" on IMCDA being the most fun IM I have done yet. Let's all make that happen!!! |

The Original 7834 Raleigh/Durham | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread I checked again- registration is still open. I wonder how many slots are left? Last year by this time it was already sold out. I wonder how much longer it will stay open? I really need to take some time off from the IM. With that said, why do I keep checking to see if it's full or not? |
