Someone may have touched on this before, but what minimum shape should I be in before I start the program?  My season is over and I haven't done much at all as this is my busy season with work.  What are the minimum physical requirments before I start?

Thanks in advance

woo hoo! ready for Jorge's Sufferfest v. 3!

I have used this plan in my spin classes for the past 2 years and it is easily adaptable to anyone, riding just about anything.  You basically get out what you put in and only you can determine what that is.

I would add a towel or 2 4  to the needed equipment-1 for you, 1 for the bike, 2 for the floor!

I also managed to train for a winter half marathon while using the program over the past two years. Just cut the longer weekend rides in the 4-6 weeks before the race.

Last chance - if you want IN the power tap group order shoot me an email ASAP as I'll send details tomorrow. All PT models are considered on the discount and some even will include the new Joule 2.0 instead of the yellow CPU.

This is a once time opportunity as I am a coach not a dealer/sales guy!

I got the email and I am in.   I have the 310xt.   What would be the downside of using it for the computer?

PennState - 2010-09-29 7:32 PM Just an FYI, Jorge is one of the true experts on power training and coaching with power.

I am a relative veteran on BT and would highly recommend him for this program or as a coach.
Honest guy with knowledge and integrity.

Best of luck folks!

Followed his plan last year. Saw huge improvements
He coached me for my first HIM, huge improvements

Jorge - I'm really looking forward to this!  Any thoughts on when you'll start yet?  I presume that you'll wait for those buying new power meters to receive them?  (I'm just an HR guy at this point).

Thanks so much for doing this.

From what I gather, the biggest drawback would be number of displays (4 compared with 8 for other computers) and lack of ability to view trailing 30 second averages. This way if you aren't steady through the pedal stroke you will see fluctuations that swi g pretty big. But it does collect all the same data for post ride analysis. Just looking into this myself the past couple weeks so may no have covered it all. Thanks Jorge for going out of your way to set this up

A 310xt is fine for doing Jorge's plan. I used one last year.

I suggest you use a display with 4 numbers.

Instanteous Power- Lap Power- Lap TIme - HR. (or cadence, or use a second screen)

Every time the lap starts, press the reset key and try to keep the Lap Power on target.

The instantaneous power will jump around but it's the lap power you are trying to keep on target.

I will also be following Jorge's plan this winter so I just bought a trainer and used it for the first time.  To get the feel for it I tried out the first couple days of last years plan and I'm using a HRM.  HR is good for runs or rides that are steady in pace but I've realized it's quite hard to use doing intervals since it's so slow to adjust.  Is this jut how it is with HR?  Or am I doing the workouts wrong?  For example, 30sec at X% and 30sec rest at X%...is that continuous or do I let my HR get down first then time the 30sec?  This is my fist time using HR and am just trying to get used to it.  I know training with power will solve the problem, but can't afford that at the moment.

Tim,  I'm in the same boat.  Will be using Garmin 310xt and HR.   I haven't tried any of last years workouts yet, but that's a good idea (where are they?)

I think that it's something that we're just going to have to get used to.  I haven't been using the trainer long, but have found that over time I have got better at using experience and perceived effort to gauge where I am with respect to zone.  I even did some workouts where I deliberately noted gear and cadence for five minute intervals and cross-checked against heartrate on Garmin Connect.  It's not perfect and obviously not as instantaneous as a power meter, but I'm guessing that Jorge isn't going to go postal on us if we're occasionally a little over or under in our zones!  Smile

Look forward to comparing notes when we get started.

Thanks Roger!  I figured I'd just have to get used to it.  I like your idea using the gears and cadence, I may have to do a session and take note on those too.  Here's last year's tread http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=186131&start=1

If you can dial in the consistency of the tension on the trainer and you have both a cadence and speed sensor, you can get pretty close using the gear and hold the applicable cadence/speed.
