For some pre or post race carbs, make sure to go to Free State Brewery on Mass Street.  Cool place and good beer.

Going to be in Kansas City Feb. 24th thru 27th.  My wife has some work training and I'm taking the opportunity to run/ride the course over those days while she's in class.  Anyone in the area want to meet up? .  Hopefully no snow or ice.

Does anyone have their hotel reservations for Kansas yet? If so where are you all staying. I'd like to stay in a hotel but then move to the campground on Saturday evening. Anyone know when those sites will be available?

BEst guess on the camp sites should be about any time based on when reservation announcements went out in past years.

swgtri,
Thank you for your perspective.  I shared it with my wife.  Very helpful indeed! Congratulations to you and your husband for successfully completing Kansas 70.3.

I just noticed that HyVee Ironkids is in Lawrence the day before the Kansas HIM.  Perfect timing!  Kids can do their tri on Saturday then watch their parents on Sunday.  What an awesome family tri weekend it will be!  http://www.ironkids.com/

Hi everyone, brand new triathlete here.  Doing this race with some others to raise money for the Blazeman Foundation for ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) research.  Very glad to have found this site.  For those who've done this before - what sort of wet suit should I be looking for (assuming temps permit them)?  I've poked around online, and I see many different styles--long-sleeve, short-sleeve, no-sleeve, full-leg, partial-leg, etc.  Any guidance would be much appreciated!  Coates

As a newbie who bought a wetsuit last year on-line.  I wish I would have looked for someplace local so I could try them on.
I purchased a sleeveless because I don't generally like sleeves and I don't plan on doing any terribly cold swims.  I also chose a full-leg to help keep me more horizontal in the water.

If you're looking to re-use this wetsuit for other races I would go with the full-sleeved/legged wetsuit. You get the maximum buoyancy this way and in turn the maximum advantage. For this specific race, last year's water temps were on the warm side but I still used my full length wetsuit and had no issues with over heating. I know some prefer the sleeve-less for easier range of motion with their arms and to avoid getting too hot.

Being a June race in the Mid-West, I know it's going to be hot.  How have you found the aid stations?  Have they run out of supplies before a slower back of the packer, like myself, come through?Laughing

I am planning to picking up a race/hydration belt for extra fluids for the run.  I need one for my longer training runs now, but I am not sure how which system I am going to select.

Yes chances are it will be steamy! Last year I think it only (only, heh) got up to 89 degrees but the day before it was hovering at 100, and it sure felt like it was near there on the parts of the run without shade. Tough stuff.

IMO, the aid stations are FANTASTIC! I am fairly BOP as well, and a slow runner, but never found anything to be lacking at the run aid stations.

Now if they could just get some more interesting POST-RACE FOOD, I'd be a happy camper.

Welcome to our world

A few weeks ago we had a 95-degree temperature swing in the span of 48 hours.
Set a record low of -17 degrees, and then turned around and set a record high of 78 degrees.

It be crazy!

Yeah, I reserved mine months ago.  Got a room at Springhill Inn and Suites for Fri-Sun night.  I got the rooms at 70.00 per night with Military Rate

Sweet. A bit of a change of pace from previous years by having to go through Active.com to get the campsite reserved. It's cheaper already without Active's convenience fee on top of everything.

Oh, and I just checked out Chrissie's blog - she's scheduled to come back and compete in this race again.Cool

Do the campsites sell out pretty quick? A day? A week? At all?

Thanks for the info too.

Well that Kansas weather is something else. I managed to get 53 miles of the bike course in 32F weather with drizzle. Last part of the ride felt a little like hell.  My helmet had ice froze all over the top. I think the course director picked out every hill in Lawrence.   Mean person.  Thank goodness that run is pancake flat.  On my journal I tried to document the best I could the bike course.  It is definitely doable.  Better start training for hills.

Last year they did sell out. I want to say it was sometime around April - but I might be misremembering here. I did notice that they're charging on a per day basis (something the park probably does on a normal basis) whereas last year I paid just one flat rate and got the whole weekend/3 nights.

Oh thank you for the info. Is it Campground #3 that I want? Or will I have a choice? It looks like the campsites are pretty large too. That's nice.

Is anyone interested in coordinating a BT camping contingency? Since you can put (what did it say?) 3 tents on each site, I know I will only need ummm. 1/3 of a site - anyone else in the same boat and want to combine? It's been fun in years past, to have a buncha the BTers all together, or at least know where everyone is.

Read your narrative on the bike course...Awesome!  Thanks for posting.
