Veteran 228 | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club I would like to say I have been warming up on the track and then doing 4 800s with some stretching in between and a cool down. I have been pushing to get faster. I am going to continue to 4do 800's ery week for a while so I can get better than I will bump it up to 5 for a while and continue that. I am hoping this developes fast twitch muscles. Also have a been reading that your neurosystem also has to adapt to the training. I will probably just do 2 long runs a month. my typical 10 mile runs but my focus for running now is track workouts. |

Champion 7495 Schwamalamadingdong! | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club There are slow people here!? i belong somewhere!? Yay! i recently figured out that i've been running too fast all the time, so i had no base, so i couldn't improve. Right now the focus is on running slower on purpose. To keep my heart rate down, i have to But i will be faster. Goals? Well, i ran a half this spring at a pace of 13:44 or so (i'd been planning on running it closer to 13/mile, but it was extremely hot that day. They actually closed the course two hours early because of the heat, so i'm not whining. (Well. That much, anyway.)). i want to run a full marathon this next spring, but... i'd rather not be out there for six hours! We shall see... i'll train as if i'm running the full but i might back down to a half. i have time to figure that out. i'm so glad i've found my people! |

Veteran 169 | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club Hi to my fellow slow runners! There is hope for us all. I started out and couldn't even run a mile. Slowly....or should I say at Turtle speed I have continued to improve. first were the 12 minute miles (with walk breaks of course) then 11:30 etc. I did a half last year and also got passed by two power walkers at about mile 10 (that was discouraging, but even worse than that. ....... They have a full marathon that starts at the same time and finishes at the same place as the half and about 10 full marathons beat me that year as well. I did the same half this year and did 10:13 pace. So I can still be in this club!! I don't get kicked out if I improve to sub 10's do I? I am hoping this is a lifetime club. |

Elite 2608 Denver, Colorado | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club My last 5K was 37:17. What amazed me was that I actually "ran" the whole way - no walking or anything like that. I did not think it was possible to run that slowly but there I was. |

Extreme Veteran 530 Northwest Louisiana | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club Is it too late to join the club? I never thought one like this existed...I don't feel so alone anymore! My last official 5K was about 32:45 mins, but I have not been able to run that since. My training runs (5ks) in my neighborhood are typically about 38-35 mins....today it was about sub-38 mins. I'm trying to run in my HR zone....just trying this out since I can force myself to go faster, but it doesn't feel good. I guess I just run faster when I'm in a race, but not when I'm just training. Am I going about it wrong? My immediate goal is to finish my first 1/2 marathon....the Houston Half in January 2007. I don't know how I'll do, but it would be nice if I can run it with a 12 min pace or less. I'm glad to have found you guys! |

Elite 2451 West Chicago, IL | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club Ok Jackie ... how could you not have told me that there were others like me? HMMMM? The slow ... the proud ... the determined? I'm so slow that it took me this long to find the thread!! Could someone please define this "sub-10 min mile" for me? It doesn't compute in my 12-13 min/mile world. Does it involve booster packs or wheels or something? My job in the race is to pace the trail vehicle!!! |

Extreme Veteran 413 | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club I'm so slow even this thread passed me by for months. I did 5k today in 31 minutes but I was trying to keep my HR below 158 My aim is to get to 10k in 50 minutes by new years eve ignoring HR rate. I don't know what relevant HR related aims are for distance so I'll just hope to improve them from now. |

Extreme Veteran 322 Reston, VA | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club Hi! I'm really really late to this thread but can i play?! Please!?! If I'm not qualified to join, let me know, because I *can* run sub-10 minute miles (very uncomfortably). BUT I just started to really focus on running at a lower HR, and yesterday I found out that in order to "run" in Z2 I have to slow down to 13:45 min/mile or so. My biggest short-term goal is to run 4 days/week, keeping my HR in the right zone. Long-term, I want to be able to do a 10k LSD at a 10min/mile with my HR at the top of Z1/bottom of Z2 (152-153 bpm). Yesterday's HR ave was 158 at 13:44 min/mile. This thread is such a great idea! Edited by cmrey528 2006-11-11 11:42 AM |

Extreme Veteran 530 Northwest Louisiana | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club I'm trying to get back to my running form. I've hit a snag lately, but I'm really going to try hard this week to run at least 3x with a long run. Thought I would post this so that I could be held somewhat accountable. I need to do a long run of at least 6 miles sometime on Sat/Sun this week. My last run was last Wednesday....I know, shame, shame. Avg pace was 11:30...I definitely belong in this club. |

Veteran 123 Carleton Place, Ontario | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club Another slow runner here. I describe my pace as glacial. ;-) My best 5K time was 33:28 but that was a couple of years ago. The best this year was 34:31.8. I would love to break 30 min for a 5K race. It is a dream of mine. My goal right now is just to work on my base. So I am listening to my HRM above all else. Once my base pace improves a bit, I will add in some speed intervals. Above all I have to work on running consistently. If I can do that then I'm confident that I can improve. Good luck to all you other slowpokes in meeting your goals. |

Master 2629 brummie land | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club welcome all the newbies and bye to newadventures. i surpassed my slow buggeryness today by dropping my mp3 player whilst taking to take some clothes off whilst running and managed a 12.10 mile but on the plus side i managed a 5.5 mile run which sets me up nicely for my first ever 10k this sunday! argh!!!!!! how is everyone else getting on? |

Veteran 169 | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club Well I almost fell out of the slow runners club but managed to hang in there. I finished the Stockadeathon 15K in 1:33 and some seconds and the sie said my pace per mile was 10:04 per mile. I'm still in the Club Next up Disney marathon in January.....oh and that pace will be well above 10 minute pace, so no worries. Edited by TC117 2006-11-20 2:36 PM |

Lethbridge, Alberta | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club My running improvement efforts have pretty much gone off the rails lately, but I'm still determined to get back on track. With my earlier high expectations, I'm already signed up for a 10k run this coming weekend. Ready or not, the event is at hand so I'm planning to go easy and just try to finish comfortably. That means my membership in the club here is in no danger any time soon. Congratulations to newadventures and anyone else graduating from our ranks. |

Extreme Veteran 530 Northwest Louisiana | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club Is anyone else out there having a hard time keeping up with their running? I have been having a very difficult time keeping my planned running schedule. Even with a challenge from one of my BT buddies to bloster me on, I'm still missing the mark a lot. I have a half marathon coming up in January! I have about 6 weeks to get ready. I know I'll finish, but I'm worried about my performance and I don't want to just go out there and do it. I want to do it well. I am resolved to try to be more consistent after the holidays. My last run was last Friday and I managed a 11:10 mile. |

Regular 82 Malvern, PA | Subject: RE: slow buggers running club Got my first sub 10 minute mile in today (barely). Went around the track at the local school here for a mile in 9:59.28. I'm definitely still in the club though till I can do under 30 minutes in the 5K. It feels great to have done it! I doubt I could hold a pace much faster than that over a distance. This time I ran two miles at a very easy jog, did the fast mile, then a 1/4 easy. Maybe just keep with that strategy but increase the fast length a 1/4 at a time or something. What strategies are you guys pursuing? Sharona - I've missed all kinds of goals since it started getting dark earlier. I missed keeping up with doing a weekly intervals workout, I'm letting the weights go till after the holidays, I've cut back some just on overall volume. It's really helped me to have some races planned in December and January, so I bet you're on the right track with the half mary. Just don't let the Thanksgiving holidays become the Christmas holidays . Look at it this way, if you keep trucking through the new year you get to scoff at the people out there to work out for a month on a New Years' resolution. Best luck to you.
