My running plan for the month is slow but steady but half my miles will come in one weekend. That is the beauty of Goofy- half mary Sat, mary Sun. I'm doing it with the same two guys as last year and we had a great time.

BTW, it is NOT necessary to have run a standalone marathon prior to your first Ironman. They are totally different beasties. My first IM was Lake Placid 2002 and first mary without the warmup was Ottawa 2003.

I SO want the Goofy Medal some day. It just seems appropriately named.

Personally, I'm just lucky to live in a spot where I can get a full Marathon and a full 2.4M IM swim, and a good HIM early enough to not affect my IM in November. My head tells me that I don't need them. My gut still isn't convinced

Hi Everybody!

An "L" team - very cool! Conveniently, my name is Leigh so it looks like I'll fit right in.

Hubby and I are training for a 1/2 mary in April, so my (slightly sandbagging) goal is 65 miles. I did finally learn to allow for an extra rest day now and then.

First run of 2008 is scheduled for this evening. We'll be gritting our teeth and runnin' in the rain. BUT, dinner is Mediterranean Lamb Curry and it's in the crockpot right now. Mmmmmmmmmm!!

Happy New Year to everyone!!

Hey, Leigh... welcome to the team.. :D

If by hysterical you mean CRAZY then yah, I'm right there with you!  How could you run with this sabe??  You and my wife could run together, she likes ABBA and Paul Simon when running.  I'll send you some CD's with some GOOD music.  Hope you get better quick, take it easy.

On a side note I knocked 12 miles off of my 70 mile goal.  And now I am paying for it!  Good luck everyone!!!

Hi L.E.M.

I am the new guy ! The name is Torben, and I am coming to you from Iceland. My goal for the month is 135k. This will be a new monthly record for me, and what a time to do it, could the weather be any worse ? I am planning to do my first IM in the beginning of September, but I thought it would be a good idea to do a Marathon first, the longest I have ever run is 23k. So I really need to get running

What IM are you doing? I'm doing my Marathon for the same reason. I just want to know what it's like to run for 4 or 5 solid hours before IM Arizona in November.

I will be doing the Cologne IM in Germany Sep. 8th

I also really want to run for 4 hours straight before doing the IM, just to make sure I can do the distance

I try to get my runs in outside, as I really really hate the treadmill ! Unfortunately that is not always possible.

Also agree that having to run a marathon before an IM is not really needed (or encouraged for first timers at each distance unless they are reallllyyyy far apart).  Your focus to be able to even run the IM marathon should be on monster bike mileage, not worrying so much about the run.  I'm a 3:12 marathoner and I still ended up walking almost the whole marathon at IMFL because I was undertrained on the bike.  Oh, and I also ran another BQ marathon just three weeks out from the IM, which probably wasn't the brightest idea in the world ....

Oh ....... and knocked out another 15.2 this morning.  Puts me at 30.5 so far for the month with another 13 on the schedule tomorrow .......

I couldn't quite figure out how one would run with it either - I just kept laughing - I think it'd be kind of like running to the  theme song to Sponge Bob Square pants - LOL

I don't know ... lucky, good genes, good running mechanics, none of the above, all of the above???  Not sure why, but I've been relatively injury-free for the last 3 years since taking up running again (with a 1,200 and two 1,400+ years).  I'm certainly not complaining!!

Although this is going to be my highest volume month ever.  In '06 I had about 3 months in a row where I was at or above 200 miles for each month training for my first BQ attempt.  The only problem was that my cycling and swimming virtually disappeared out of my log because of that.  I'd prefer that was not the case ......

I used to do 60 plus weeks when I was in high school and college.  I know a lot of people who can pound out major mileage who just startedd running a few years ago. Maybe I should have waited and started when I was older

I ran in high school (junior and senior years) and while I was in the military, but stopped in '92 and didn't start back up until '05.  However, in the meantime I was a fairly competitive local cycling road racer ('93 - '98).  I did go around 5 years with doing absolutely nothing though after '98, so that may have given me a few extra years of body pounding that I'm making use of now.

I think running tends to eat the most time of the three disciplines if you want to get good at it. Swimming is so much technique that there are laws of diminishing returns if you spend too much time in the water...

blasphemy!

If I think that really hard, will it be true? Of course, I guess I could actually get IN the water once in a while...

Don't ever tell that to the hard core swimmers. Those guys are NUTS. My daughters have been doing 5 hours a day over the winter break, just for high school swimming.

I also swam for close to 18 years. In High school we would have double workouts and be in 5 hours a day - In college my husband (now) could tell when I had swam because he could smell the chlorine on me.  Eau do chlorine

Okay, guess I'm assigned to this team!

My goal for the month is 250 miles.  I've got over 300 scheduled but I know that I'll more than likely not hit every mile planned on the schedule, so 250 is a more realistic number.  Regardless, anything over 210 or so will be a new monthly record for me!

I'm trying to go for a sub-3 marathon in the beginning of March with an aggressive plan from Advanced Marathoning by Pfitzinger and Douglas.  Assuming I hit all the training milestones (and can recover from the next 8 weeks of hard training) I should be in a position to go for it!!

Holy Cow! Now I'm feeling like my goal is somewhat understated and that seldom happen. **runs off scratching his head**

Unless I'm reading your 1/2 marathon race report from last year wrong, you're in the 30 - 34 age group???

Jeez, what does that make me in the 35 - 39 group ... ancient??
