Hey Tony--I am digging the new avatar.   Love the outfit!  You are FAST, but I agree warming up is key.  I bet you would have gotten your speed goal if you had done some time on the trainer first.  Now you  know!

Reuben--Totally awesome job.  I am glad the fueling worked and your "don't walk a step" strategy seemed to pay off.  Those long legs of yours have even more in them.  This fall, sub 2:10 will be no problem!

Rob--I guess they let Candanians travel to CUBA?

Roni-great job getting out there.  The key is having fun and then performance follows.  You are putting things in the right order.

Where the heck is Steve? and our biggest poster, Trevor?

Suzy

You sure can tell when Tony and/or I are in meetings or lunch ...Post count really drops. Iw ent out for a 10k run. I can announce that finally, spring has come to Calgary. Mid 60's F right now.

Hey guys and gals, RR is up.

Tony, regardless of speed, it sounds like you had a great experience.  Look at how much you learned.  I think having these disappointments and learning from them is totally what this sport is about. it would be boring it everyone could do it perfectly the first time like me Wink

Reuben - half marathon.  WAY TO GO!  I hear ya bro' on progress with running. I am right there with ya. First we conquer the distance, then work on the speed.

Steve - about time you got back slacker. I've had to wait a whole weekend to talk to you.  (see PMKiss

Funny but true story.  (Yes, I haven't completely unpacked from the race this weekend)....so my dog got into my tri bag and ate all the open and unopened GU's that were in my fuel box.  Not only are there stains on the floor, he ate my last supply of the Mint Chocolate GUs they only make at Chirstmas time!  Then the dog had the nerve to fart all night long because of it!   I should drag his butt out for a 6 mile run to make him earn all that fuel he ate!!!!!

Rueben Awesome, awesome on the 1/2. I'm totally where you were as well. Back in October there was no way i could run 1km nevermind 10k.. Like Barry said the half is still pretty large.

And Tracy, I think I  have 3 or 4 mint chocolate GU's left in my bag of goodies at home. What are they worth to you?Surprised

Tracy, I never gave you your pat on the back for your race.  Great job!
And I bet the dog has plenty of energy for a day or two.  Aren't dogs greatSurprised

Tony, my son is 9.  He was pitching against a full-blown travel team (we are associated with out local league).  He was pumped.  He tried to knocked the fence down in game two and three with line drives up the gut.

Barry and Trevor (and all other newbies), it's nice to be around so many others just starting.  I have to honest - I had some serious doubts about 3 weeks ago.  With 1 week left I was feeling good, but still unsure.  Standing in that crowd - there was NO doubt.  I'm ready to go again.  In fact, I'm leaving the office right now for about a 15 mile bike ride to get some blood flow through my legs.

This must be the feeling a meth user gets after that first hit!  ADDICTION!!!!!

Just wait until you do your 1st tri!! Read my 1st RR from March. Its a total beginner report. You get hooked. A year and a half ago, I was a fat, lazy Bast**d. Now I've got 3 sprints, and my 1st Oly in the next 2 months. And this forum is a great place to share the meth.

Stop it... I had a rough weekend!  Let's see: I biked, I ran, I slept, I golfed, I laughed, I read, I played cards, I watched a movie, I drank some Jack and Coke, I drank some wine, I had a few beers, I got a sunburn, I ate A LOT of food (I am starting to sound like ANNIE DUKE from celebrity apprentice!).... I thought about all of you, and Tracy--- I got the down low from Jeremy (through Facebook!)... I knew you did in your race before you did!  Technology is great!

Hey there.  Well, I did it.  I survived my first tri and didn't do awful Smile.  Actually I think it went pretty well.  The swim was a little harder than I expected, the bike was tough but doable, and the run went well.  Race report is up on the RR Forum (sorry I don't know how to link it here) if anyone wants to read it.  I think the hardest part of the whole day was the 3 hour wait to get in the pool - for me and my husband.  But when you've got 800 people lining up for a serpentine pool swim it's going to take a while.

I'm going to take it easy this week (promised my husband I would) and then next week it's back into training.  I've got another sprint in August and it's got a longer and hillier bike ride than this one did, so I need to concentrate on that for the next couple of months along with trying to get enough running in for a decent half marathon in September.

I'll be back later to try to catch up with everyone.  Have a good day!
Janet

BigReub - 2009-05-04 12:10 PM I'm back but ready to go right back to bed.  But not due to the race.  We got back in town last night at 10:30 from my son's baseball tourney (which he lost in the title game).  And then I had to finish a project that I had promised for this morning for my kids' prinicipal.

Anyhow,  13.1 miles - 2:18:17.

Thanks for everyone's input here - especially my recent AM nutrition question.  Ate PBJ at 4:30 and 5:45 and a banana at 6:50.  Then took gels when I felt hungry during the run.

In November I couldn't run a 1/2.  When I signed up 2:10 was my time goal.  My primary goal though was to run absolutely every last inch - which I did.  I never stopped for traffic, drink (drank while running), stretch, tinkle, nothing.  I was slow as a turd, but I never stopped.
This sport is so mental...the brain is an amazing tool.  Had I not overcome my brain early in December I could have never done this.  Actually, the 13.1 was relatively easy.  Physically I was able...and mentally I was in cruise control.

Enough of the sappy stuff...
The start was frustrating because walkers were all over the course so there was a lot of weaving.  The first 1.5 miles is a slow right hand bend and I stupidly stayed on the left side.  I then started paying attention to where the course was headed and shortened the course as much as possible.  Running on the speedway was brutally boring.

So I went from nothing to 13.1 in 6 months.  My wife and I are already making plans for next years mini.

Thanks for all your help.

I'm not running this week - will be hitting the bike a few times.  Then I get on sprint training!

One side note, my garmin and two other garmins showed the course at 13.24 miles.  All three garmins - exactly the same.

Great job on ALL your accomplishments!  That is awesome!

Congrats on finishing your first tri!  Way to go.  As everyone always says, the biggest part of swimming is the technique.  Get that and the rest is just putting in the laps.  Great job overall!  It will happen.

Boy does it feel good to get things back to normal.  I just got back from the pool.  It was my first day back training since my race on 4/25.  I have been going to PT, but it's not the same.  Even though it was only 1000m, it felt real good and I was not even tired!  I love it!
