salt supplement I think is being used generically - sodium isn't the only electrolyte we sweat- how  bout  calicum ,potassium,magnesium... loose to much of this stuff and you're cramping ... not saying that these electrolytes  will eliminate cramping but it may reduce the the chances of it happening. As stated in a previous post, over hydration (with water)  combined with (excess) sweating can definitely knock these electrolytes outta wack.. sometimes to the point where it may effect the heart.

Good point on the hyponatremia (low salt).  I worked the med tent last year and we saw a few with that.  10+ lbs of weight gain which is 22 liters of free water over the course of the day.  Im sure there was some food in the weight gain too but it was alarming none the less.

Look at Lava salts; they have potassium and calcium etc.  One of the reasons I use it.  They are all salts.  I once sweated 13# of fluid on a 90 mile ride (5.5 hours roughly) ..........I had replaced 12# of that and took electrolytes accordingly but I still felt like a wet rag afterwards as that is approaching 10% of my body weight.  Yep I sweat that much.  Its stooopid

I use Lava Salts as well as recommended by my coach at the time when I started watching my sodium intake in working out.

Fabulous advise from Catwoman:

Learn to lie to yourself during training. It will come in handy on race day.

I love it!

Tired today.  Any one else worn out?  Not sure I'm real pleased with IronFit today.  He increased the swim to 3x/wk, AND at the same time went from 2600 yards to 3600 yards.  Added sprints to both the bike and run.  I'm sore, tired, exhausted and just plain worn out.

Well and I was stoopid on the group ride last night and hammered for almost two hours.  I guess I was feeling frisky at first, after that it was just hanging on.

Unfortunately I pulled something funky in my foot on Sunday running around barefoot so I haven't ran or biked since then. I have put in some time in the pool this week so that was nice and hopefully I should be good for a race in three days with the icing and massaging I've been doing.

I hear your frustrations.  My legs have felt like lead this week and I haven't particularly pushed any one thing to hard. First time all year that this feeling has been sustained.  I hope I can shake it for my oly on Sat.  Is an easy pace, "spin out the legs" 2 hour ride tomorrow a good idea or bad idea?

Justin, if you want to race the oly on Saturday, I'd take it easy on Friday, especially if you're feeling fatigued.  Don't have time to hurt yourself.

I think a spin is a fine idea, but I wouldn't do 2 hours.  like 45' to an hour.  maybe a little ice bath after

Buy a couple bags of ice

Good luck!

When my legs are tired from lots of cycling I tend to race well...strange but it's happened quite a few times.

Take a couple of empty plastic tupperwares or cool whip containers or something and freeze them.  They last longer than ice cubes.  You don't need to fill them...an inch of water in the bottom is enough.  And it's FREE!  No need to buy ice!

Hi all, I'm back from my trip to Sweden.  I got a cold, and then threw my back out, so I have had better vacations .  I got in a couple of run (threw out my back at the end of the second one on Wednesday), one open water swim (before I got sick) and a hilly bike ride on a weird european bike (our whole trip we saw about three road bikes, 10 mountain bikes, and the rest were weird with gears hiden in the rear hub (at first we thought they were fixed gear bikes).

We got home last night around 9:30 so we are kind of messed up on what time it is.

Has anyone else had back problems?  I'm wondering about going out for a ride this morning - at first i was planning on doing a normal long right 3-4 hours, but now I'm not sure that is a good idea.  My back isn't spasmin anymore, but it is definitely still stiff...

Well there goes that idea.  I tried to head out for a bike ride - 2 hours max, easy stuff, 3 km in, i ran over something and got a nice big screw in my back tire.  Need to get new tires as I don't think it will hold the pressure any more (read, BIG hole, needed a screw driver to get it out).  I called DH and he came to pick me up.  Guess I'm taking another rest day.  Grrrrr...

Not sure if you believe in divine intervention or purposeful coincidences but perhaps you would have hurt your back more if you did you ride today.  Enjoy the day off!

Sounds like interesting vacation!

Bummer about the tire....only time I did that was after I put new tire on and ran over something with 20 miles of putting it on. Glad your husband could come pick you up so you weren't stranded.

Probikekit.com has tires for great prices and they have a 15% of code currently which brings some Pro3s down to $27 each if you buy the grey pair. Code is PBK15

Hope your day improves..watch the tour...it should be an exciting day!

I've had back problems...for 7 months.  I don't have it all figured out yet, but my advice would be to take the time to heal now so you'll be better sooner.  If you keep pushing, you may just prolong the problem.  I've had two different doctors give two different answers about what I should and shouldn't do, so my new plan is to listen to my body and if it hurts, don't do it.  I had cut back to just swimming, and am reintroducing biking and running.  You can check out my logs since Dec. 28 if you want to see what I tried and how it did/didn't work.  I do recommend keeping moving.

Sundays Welsh National 12hr time trial saw me manage 225.01 miles so I know my biking is on track and with the swimticking over things are deffo looking up Laughing

What kind of back problems are you having?  I recently had some back problems that have now been worked out.  It was like I couldn't stand straight up.  Something was catching or felt like it needed to pop.  (I do go to a chiro).  Turns out I had a huge knot DEEP in the back muscle.   I am now foam rolling and really stretching (hamstrings, hip flexors, soaz, etc) everyday.

Nice job on the 12 hour TT! I've always wanted to try one of those...eyeing a 24 hour race in FL every February but when reality comes and I realize I'd be doing hours and hours on the trainer I come to my senses.

Super you can run 65'....each mile after being off from injury feels like a gift.

I threw out my back (I think by rolling my ankle very badly on a run) while I was on vacation.  for the first 48 hours or so I was having back spasms when I went from laying down to standing up, or if I tried to step too far forward.  Not is is mostly a dull aching pain in my low low back.  Sitting all day so far at work (my first day back from vacation) has not been great.

My hamstrings don't hurt and havent really hurt at all, but they are tight, and the best strech seems to be stretching my hamstrings.  I'm normally the person that can tough the floor flat handed, but right now, I can't seem to make it past 90 degrees without it hurting.  Called my doctor this morning and the earliest I can get in is Friday.  Considering seeing if I can get into a physiotherapist before then.
