Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey everyone. Happy Father's Day to the dads in the group. Once again, sorry for not being around the last few days. The internet in the barracks is down, again, and we didn't get to the computer labs because of our schedule. Race went ok yesterday. I had a horrible swim though. It was pretty bad. But I did ok on the bike and run though, all things considered. It was a lot of fun though. A couple of the guys in my class did it too and it was their first race. They had a blast and are talking about wanting to race again and buying new bikes and all stuff, so it was a good time all around. Last week, I started getting some nasty shin splints, so I've eased off a bit this past week, and I'll probably take it easy this coming week too. I don't want to go home injured because I have a lot of work to do to get ready for CajunMan. Only a week and half to go and I'll be home!! Hope you are all doing good. Hopefully I'll be able to get back to normal once I get home and try to get caught up on everything that's going on. Until then, have a great rest of the weekend! |

It wasn't a PR but I didn't expect one since this was a really, really hilly race! I did better than I expected, though! ![]() Great job! Way to conquer the hills!! |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey everyone, I'm quite busy at work today but wanted to get a quick post in. I just got my race report in for the race I did yesterday. I felt aweful during the race yesterday and just as bad making the report :-P It was definitely the worst traithlon performance I have had thus far. All I can say is that it gave me the experience I need to get prepared for the next one. Now that I'm back from vacation and this damn ear infection is about gone I'll get back into things. I am going to take today off to recover and then I am going to do a bike time trial tomorrow, swim wed and thur, run friday and saturday and a group ride sunday. |

Oh no! Recover quickly. Don't hesitate to scratch the TT tomorrow (are you doing it as a test on your own, or is it an organized TT). Racing and TT at the tail end of an ear infection is tough on the body. Congrats on finishing yesterday despite not feeling well |

![]() | ![]() Hey everyone! I had a good Father's Day. I got a cool tie from my kids (wife actually) that has my son's picture on it. So, of course, I had to wear it to work today. I started my training plan for the MCM too at the end of last week. The Stride intervals and strength work seems to already be paying-off somewhat. I felt really good on my run last night. Great job on the races everyone! Boston, how'd you cut-off 4 minutes on the swim? was it the same course? that's a huge time difference. Jeremy, where was your swim in the pool or OWS? |

Sensei ![]() | ![]() Lauren, Saw in another thread that you split the long run and bike up during the week. That is one reason I did NOT pick a certain plan. Long runs on a Thursdays seemed tough to get in, especially when they get up to 3 hours. You say that it has worked out for you, though. Could you give any more thoughts? I had aprehension of doing a long run the day after a long bike, but even more issue with trying to get in 2:30 to 3 hours on a Thursday night.... |

Well, for me, it has a lot to do with the fact that I was injured all spring and so doing the long runs with as little fatigue as possible (i.e., not having a long ride the day before) is most ideal. My longest run before IM will only be 2 hrs, though, so it's a little less of a challenge (that said, with all the stretches, active warmup, massage, etc., I have to do before my long runs, it takes more nearly an hour to get out of the house). I did my long runs the day after my long rides during HIM training, and I found them not to be as good. Granted, overall fatigue is a lot greater during IM training, so you're not starting these runs feeling totally fresh (at least the legs aren't very fresh), but you are better hydrated, fueled, and rested than you are the day after a long ride (at least I found). So, overall, I am not as "tired." I can just focus on the run, and there's no thoughts of feeling so tired from yesterday's long, hot ride. Planning is tough. I am in bed by 8 p.m. the night before my long run. I usually ride the night before, so two days before the long run, I get my fuel belt ready (stick in the fridge), buy my ice-bath ice (stick in my parents' extra freezer...they live around the corner), and lay out my clothes, etc. I also have my dinner cooked for the night before at least a day or two in advance. All in an effort to save time and get me to bed on time! I do my long runs in the AM, but I always train in the AM when I have just one session. The PM would be hard since I can't ever really guarantee how well I'll eat or hydrate during the day (work), and I would need to make a lot of, um, pit stops Also, it helps in not having two crazy days during the weekend. Mentally, that's been nice these past few weeks (you can see my blog from yesterday to see how sometimes this long stuff just really plays with your mind...the constant solitude of the weekends). The only weird thing about the long run midweek is that you have that long-sesssion "hangover" to deal with two times a week. I always find that after a long session, no matter how well I eat and hydrate, I am never 100% the next day (feel a little run down); it always takes a day or two to return to normal. So, it's weird feeling like that twice. Edited by LaurenSU02 2008-06-16 1:39 PM |

Sensei ![]() | ![]() shiggy - 2008-06-16 1:54 PM What about doing the long run the day before the long bike? Is this an option? For me, the run takes a lot more out of me than a long bike. At least for the HIM. I felt 80-90 percent the day after along bike, but not nearly as good after a long run - the legs hurt the next day (I'm hoping ice baths may help that this training cycle). I would choose NOT to do a run the day before a long bike, as I know that it may be very hard, or next to impossible to get myself on the bike for 4-5 hours the next day. But that's just me. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hmm... you get Friday afternoons off, right? How about a Friday/Sunday Long bike and long run with an easy day between? Edited by shiggy 2008-06-16 4:26 PM |

Probably a long run on Fri, long bike on sat (need to stay out of the heat as much as I can) .... Could be the ticket! Thanks! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() GomesBolt - 2008-06-16 12:52 PM Great job on the races everyone! Boston, how'd you cut-off 4 minutes on the swim? was it the same course? that's a huge time difference. First, the water was 65 not 55 degrees, big difference. Second, I swam a lot the last month. Third, I stayed to the outside so I didn't drift inside off course an extra 100 yds. Lastly, I didn't do the breast or side stroke for half the race. Amazing what actually swimming the crawl will do |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So I attempted to change a bike tire for the first time last night. It's hard!! Once I got the hang of it, I was able to get the tire off OK, but I had a really hard time getting the thing back on. Do you guys have any tips that you use to get it back on? ![]() | ![]() Anger works... I haven't seen the new Hulk Movie, but whenever I need to open a jar, lift something, need to break off a piece of something, I always go "HULK SMASSSHHH!!!" and it works. Mostly I do that because it cracks my wife-up. Seriously though, when I've changed tires, you gotta use the paddles and you just continually try to work them from outside-in. Hardest part is getting the last few inches of the tube over the wheel. Sorry I couldn't give you a more technical response. |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() vball03umd - 2008-06-17 9:35 AM So I attempted to change a bike tire for the first time last night. It's hard!! Once I got the hang of it, I was able to get the tire off OK, but I had a really hard time getting the thing back on. Do you guys have any tips that you use to get it back on? Congrats. The first tire change is always the most difficult! Trust me, it gets MUCH easier. I do lots of tire changes, so I have a pretty good system (just hope if a flat happens in a race, I can keep my cool to change it quickly). You'll want to put a little bit of air into the new tube, either by using small hand pump or blowing into it. It shouldn't be inflated, but enough air that it's not totally flat. Then put the tube into the tire. Once it's in there, put the valve through the rim hole and start putting on the tire. Most people find it's easier to but one side of the tire in first and then other. I have found that with some tires and rims, it's easy to just go around the tire putting both sides in at the same time. Find what works for you. I usually start at the valve and work outwards in both directions. I also find it's easier if I put the tire back on while sitting down. I sit with my legs out in front of me and knees bent a little. Just rest the wheel horizontally on your knees and toes. |
