What sort of start time is 2.00AM???? Also what is 'In and Out?' Good luck with your race and let us all know how it went. Did you actually ask that??? Only the best hamburgers in the world. I also crave their chocolate shakes. Fortunately, the closest one to us is about 1000 miles away. lol So I have an In and Out about once every three years. i guess the closest one to me must be 5000miles away, guessi'll just have to wait. ALLEN! It must be terribly early where you are. I was just coming by to WISH YOU LUCK!!! Oh, and that's the second time I've heard "do a Yanti" today TO BE CLEAR in reference to getting hypothermic during a race. How very odd. Must think about your attire ... it's 8.45 pm here in the in britannia. Got to be up at 5am. cant even find that on my clock. |

Master 9705 Raleigh, NC area | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - FULL POD ukweeble - 2012-04-21 2:54 AM Ok guys and girls. Need your advice/comments cause i have no experience in this area. I have checked the forcast for my race tommorrow. I race at 8.00 am. At this time the weather will only be 44 degrees with a 50% chance of rain (possibly including thunderstorms and hail) and a 10mph wind . I guess that if anything is going to 'Harden The Frog Up', it will be my first race! First off, 50% chance of rain also means 50% of no rain, right? Let's hope for that. This is what I have in my notes:
Since this is racing and not training -- and be cause you are not a girlie man/frog, I would skip the capris and just have tri shorts. Do you have a running or cycling vest that you could pull on over a long sleeved T? (Yes, I know Salty will say, "What's with the vest?!" but I'm not Salty.) Edited by jmkizer 2012-04-21 6:50 PM |

Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - FULL POD Kirk - super job on your race, can't wait for all the deets! Chris - I'm still totally jealous of your day of 'smoking' Adrienne - those. shoes. ROCK!!! I love the customization of AD KNOWS, the take off of Bo Knows. Way cool! Yanti - what can I say, you lead the most mysterious and fascinating life and have the best attitude ever! Allen - those conditions sound, well, brrrr! I hope the good advice the others gave helps and you stay warm and have a great race! Hope the hail stays away. There's no gear for that, except maybe hockey equipment, and that's not really aero I had a very fun day working a local road bike race in the morning/early afternoon, then coming home to take a nice 25 mile bike ride with my neighbor. He surprised me by asking me yesterday if I wanted to ride. I was a bit nervous, just not knowing what to expect, but I think we both had a good time. I'm thankful we were riding the direction we were when the speeding, crazy, BMW-driving guy came flying down the small, windy, (rolling) hilly, country-ish road near our house and almost wiped out. He was easily going 60 in a 25 and the car rocked side to side a few times when he took the corner too fast and when he saw us. He nearly rolled the thing. I think we freaked him out a little even though we were headed the other direction. If we were going the other way, he probably wouldn't have seen us and we'd both been dead. The wind really picked up strong about 2/3 into the ride, rolling in before the cold front and rain. Man, that made for a not-so-pleasant return seeing as we were head into it most of the time. But hey, it was still a great ride (we went to one of my fav riding destinations, the winery - no, we didn't stop or partake ) |

Master 9705 Raleigh, NC area | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - FULL POD KansasMom - 2012-04-21 9:55 AM Oh, boy. I hope the weather turns out better than they are expecting. Wear something warm under the jacket -- you may want to spring for something water proof, but I don't necessarily think it needs to be super fancy or expensive. I second wearing gloves -- full finger gloves. Remember, you lose heat primarily through your head, feet, and hands. Your legs will actually probably be okay. I wear something over my ears (and yes, it does look dorky); in your case, I would probably opt for smart wool socks, even on the bike (I don't usually wear socks on the bike at all, and am actually transitioning from wearing them at all on the run, as well). Oh yes! I have a Pearl Izumi headband that covers the ears and has tiny holes on the sides that you can slip sunglasses in -- not that Allen will probably need sunglasses tomorrow but it's a nice feature for longer rides in cooler weather. [quoteOh, and remember to bring something dry to change into. That will make a huge difference in how comfortable/uncomfortable you will be. |

Master 9705 Raleigh, NC area | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - FULL POD rrrunner - 2012-04-21 11:10 AM As for my race it is a relay called Baker to Vegas. It starts in Baker, California and ends in Las Vegas, Nevada. It is 120 miles and each team has 20 runners. I am leg 17. This is my 3rd year on this team with this leg and I enjoy it. I run from 7.5 miles out of Vegas to the very edge of Vegas so I get to run toward the Vegas city lights for most of my run. I enjoy the 2 AM temps as compared to the folks running today (our team starts in about 2 hours) who will be facing 90 - 100 temps. Each runner is followed by a support car and those of us running at night wear a blinking vest. It's not a tri but I enjoy doing it. The teams consist of local, state and federal law enforcement from all over the US and around the world (last year I got passed by a guy from the Canadian Mounted Police). Sounds fun! Enjoy! |

I just so happen to live in that 44 and raining climate. I always feel like the more non-waterproof layers the worse off you are. I have found that it just soaks through and makes you colder. I tend to wear the very minimum. Especially because even the things that are deemed "waterproof" only are to a certain extent. "Waterproof" also means sweat a lot -- so you are still wet, just from the inside and not the outside. |

Oh and what's a capris? I dont own a vest so i am going to have to go with standard T under long sleeve T and ultra lightweight jacket for the bike to keep my arms a little warmer on the bike then down to T for run. Tri shorts for the legs. |

If they don't though, enjoy it all the same--it will still be fun! I just (okay maybe an hour ago or so) finished a 6 mile run--made my goal of 1:10...Not bad considering its HOT! 88+ degrees today and yesterday...I am NOT ready for summer yet...though on the bright side, this means more water in the lake, and said water will also be warmer. Tomorrow, it will be time to hit the pool for some drill-y swim stuff. |

Master 4452 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - FULL POD I had a fantastic day today! Got up and went for a short run before work. Beautiful morning, sun shining. My legs felt like cement for first half of run, but loosened up for second half. Went to work where I had a great day. All our patients were nice (no biting dogs or naughty cats), got to work with some good friends, the day went quickly because it was very busy. Had a 2 hour bike ride to do this evening and thank goodness it was still nice out--cloudy, but not raining. I have been nervous about going out on a long ride because the last time I did I got a flat. I wasn't about to waste the nice weather though. I headed off to a big park about 10km away that has a 5km trail along the perimeter. Sometimes I will do a few laps there. Got there, and decided to go on to the Golden Ears Bridge, about 10km further on, then went over the bridge and turned around. I just kept telling myself if I have a flat, I will just deal with it. Never had one. Phew! Anyway, got in 41km and built some confidence. Felt great! But the best part of my day? My little baby Elektra (she is 3, but she is the baby of the family) got her Agility Trail Champion of Canada today! (She had to 'pass' 15 different courses in 4 different disciplines--it took about 20 months). My partner gets some credit too of course. Well I guess most of the credit, since she did all the training. But I picked her out of the litter! I'm so proud of them. Hope everyone else had a great day too! Can't wait to read the race reports. Salty- Those are fantastic shoes, and the brewery that makes Son of a Peach is RJ Rockers so you can keep an eye out. Yanti-Why were you hiding out from the cops? Mostly just curious... Thanks all for the well wishes and inspires, we ended up getting third in every event for the relay but ended up 4th so no podium but we were close and I think my friend is going to try a sprint tri with me this summer! Here is the race report http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=436334&posts=1&start=1
I will say that although I was close to puking by the end, mostly because I decided to hammer it home, I think I would have been good for the run had I trained for it mentally speaking. I had a lot of fun on both the swim and bike. At one point right after having the 2x caffine espresso love GU my coworker who was in the support van drove past me and I screamed at him... so he turned around and said I had waaay too much energy for mile 43 and should be peddaling harder. Which I did.
Catching up on house work today but will be looking for the UK contingent of the pod to sound off on his race. |
