Sydney was AWESOME!!!!  The foot was taped and I ran as hard as I dared in cold windy conditions with 85,000 of my closest friends.  It's a great run, basically climbs for about 11km with a 3km downhill into Bondi Beach and the atmosphere is party central.  I had a great time with Nicki and Alan, we ate and ate, when we weren't running.  Pulled up fine afterwards, hammies a bit tight this morning but foot is fine.

Alas no running shoes, the expo was rubbish with a few New Balance but nothing else so online we go.  I know which shoes I can wear - Asics Kayanos or 2170's just the cheapest site to find now!

Robbie alas didn't quite make the Channel crossing - got pulled 2miles from the shore, the sea turned ugly and after 12 hours he didn't have the strength to fight it, if he had continued it could have been another 7 or 8 hours.  He had a grand time and isn't disappointed at all.  Out of the four so far he got the furthest and is considered the 'worst' swimmer of the bunch.

He has joined a relay team who are doing a double crossing next year in October and asked if I would join....I was tempted for a nano second, only have to swim maximum of an hour at a time (how many times though!!!).  BUT I don't have the annual leave to spare as i'm already going to Europe in July.  Plus it's an expense and the nail in the coffin for me - i have to gain 10 kilos (22lbs) er no thanks!!!!

Thanks for all the enthusiastic well wishes - love being a part of this pod!  Olympics is now over, I have nothing to watch at all.

Sounds like a great time! Visiting Australia is definitely on my bucket list. My brother in law was there for the olympics.  So cool! Glad you had a good race, make sure you find some shoes before you do too much more running.

so my last Channel swimmer is off and swimming - he's about 40mins into his swim, Go Richard Keir.  I will update you all!  Coach Johnny's words of wisdom to him were it's all about the last 5km, if you really want it this is where it counts most.  If you really want it you will get through the last 5km.

Looking forward to being back at squad tonight.  Life feels normal today!

Yanti-  Hope you are feeling better, stay in bed.

I'm with Ann-Marie not a big fan of cockiness, if you are that good you don't need to be cocky.

Great Job Felicia and Ben!  That's awesome yall have something to share.

OK, so I've been contemplating joining a masters program.  I was at my normal pool (near work) last week and picked up a flyer for the masters group that meets there.  I looked online and there fees are $86/mo for 1 day a week, $150/mo for 2 days a week and $192/mo for 3 days a week.  Now as much as I'd like to improve my swim that's just CRAZY!

So the pool close to my house has flyers up for the masters program there.  Their fees are $40 per month for three 1-hr sessions per week, only one per week with a coach on deck.

Thoughts?

Ouch!  My Masters is at the Y--I'm not a member, so it is about $180 for 6 weeks for 3 days/week, so those first fees seem a little steep.  I have found that just having a group to swim with is helpful (motivation to get to the pool, and a little 'push' when I am feeling lazy)--so even though your local pool only has the coach for one hour/week, I bet  it would help your swim.

That is a good point.  Also, once I get more in to my HIM training it would make 2-a-days easier if I get my 3 swims out of the way in the mornings. Ew, but cold pool water at 6am? Undecided

Another good point! No scrounging for a lane during high school swim season would be nice.  If I actually go all 3 days per week the fees are actually less than just the entrance fee to the pool...

I think just having a group to work with would make a big difference -- I know it would for me. Having the hour of coaching a week might be enough to give you something specific to work on with your technique in the other sessions.

Your post reminds me that I want to ask our resident swimming coach(es) if we could start some kind of Masters/group swim a couple times a week and and youth swim club. I'm looking at the Y as a possibility for the boys, but it's 30 minutes each way, and there is no Masters group -- the closest one to me, the last time I checked, is 45 minutes away. That's hard to justify in my time-crunched life.

Well I think Yanti set the tone for my weekend. It had a strange McDonalds theme.

On Saturday after we had wrapped up working an event we went downtown Portland to do our long run. I was STARVING but there was a ton of traffic and we didn't get a chance to stop. Finally we get downtown and the only semi-fast place to get food is McDonalds. I ordered Nuggets, dumped them into my bag and did my long run while eating them.

Then on Sunday when my friend dropped me off (my SO was picking me up) in a McDonalds parking lot of all places. I noticed the bushes smoking. At first I thought it was mist from a sprinkler then I realized it was smoke. I ran over to find the beauty bark was on fire. With my catlike reflexes (and the help of a homeless gentleman) I stomped it out.

That first option is just nuts! The second is very reasonable and if for some reason after a session or two you don't like it, you're only out $40.I guess I'm really lucky, my masters program costs $60/month for unlimited sessions. If I wanted, I could get about 14 sessions a week, including 3 OWS. The coach is always on deck. The pool is heated for the winter.

I'm back from Fantasy Land, aka New Orleans, we all survived- the house we rented mostly survived, one of the partiers kind of took out a koi pond.  I'm still not entirely sure how one does that, it was an inground pond, even though I saw the aftermath.  I did the red dress run on saturday morning, 5k through bourbon street with like 3500 people, so more of a stroll, while eveyone was wearing a red dress although I was the only one from the group so I was hammered way early on saturday, and yes I got a dress to wear no pictures thoguh.

Sounds like an exciting weekend, and the run sounds like a lot of fun. I like to mix it up a little, too - I'm trying to talk my whole family into doing a 4 mile Monster run near Halloween. Everyone is expected to dress up -- it takes place after dark on trails in/around El Dorado (where I did one of my Tri's this year, so we are all familiar with the trails), and hiding in the trees/bushes are "monsters" who will jump out at you as you run/walk along. That's just too much fun to pass up, and my 5 year old loves to be scared, so it will be perfect for him! lol

Training Question:

I have one more tri this season -- September 8 (I think), then I turn to a run-focused schedule. I need to get back to building up my run mileage after our trip to Colorado, so here's what I'm thinking. How does it look?

Swim 2-3 sessions a week (30-45 minutes each) -- 500m lake swim

Bike 3 sessions a week (two 12 mile and one 15-20 mile) -- 10-11 mile route.

Run 6 sessions a week, following the Barry P 3-2-1 principle -- 3 short; 2 medium; and 1 long. -- 5k

Once September 8 is over, I will throw the bike on the trainer and ride inside a couple times a week for 45-60 minutes. I want to continue swimming 2-3 times a week because it feels so good, and I don't want to lose the little progress I have made. I will stick with the Barry P 3-2-1 plan, slowly increasing mileage every other week.

Weight Loss Question:

My weight has been really stagnate this season -- holding at about 138. I almost died when I saw my race photos from this weekend. I mean I know -- I've had three c-sections; I am 51; I'm pre/peri menopausal. My body is changing. I get all that. But I used to way 30 pounds more than I do now, and I swear, I look horrible. My middle is HUGE. I tried to comfort myself that everyone looks bad in a one piece tri-suit (especially in an aero position on the bike), but seriously, I could see my c-section "ledge." (scar tissue junk.)

I understand that it's difficult to lose weight while you are actively training, but I really need to try to lose 15-20 pounds this off season. Advice? What's the best way to approach this. I know how to eat heathfully, but I also need to fuel my run workouts (especially). What do you all do about nutrition/weight loss during the off season?

I'm watching team synchro swimming right now.

Those chicks are HOT and those moves are insanely difficult.

That's how I feel about Team Rhythmic Gymnastics I watched yesterday.

Also, I might have a girl crush on Allyson Felix.

Ben finished his race in 34 minutes -- 18th overall in the pups. I finished in 1:19, 88th overall in the dogs. My run was 28 minutes and change and I averaged 17.3 on the bike. Everything keeps getting better. No medals for either of us, but we got to run together for half a mile, so that was great. More when I get more details, but Ben is hooked. He had a blast.

Great job!!

Glad your foot is ok and you were able to race!  That sounds really awesome.

I'm watching team synchro swimming right now.

Those chicks are HOT and those moves are insanely difficult.

That's how I feel about Team Rhythmic Gymnastics I watched yesterday.

Also, I might have a girl crush on Allyson Felix.

I have watched the ribbon gymnastics before but never saw the ball routine.  Wow--I think I just happened to turn on the TV when the World Champ was on, but it was absolutely amazing.  I couldn't believe the moves she was doing, while throwing, bouncing, catching the ball.  Some serious athleticism!

Dude, you ate McNuggets for your long run nutrition and you are bagging us?

Yes.

I love you.

BTW, tried the Clover coffee at Starbucks yesterday!  Soooo good.  I have a friend who really wants to buy one for his kitchen.

I saw her first. Stand in line behind me. I even told my husband, "I really like Felix." She's so awesome.
