Caleb, nice job! How awsome to get that first race done!

Julia, congratulations, lady!

So I have barely been on the boards the last few days as I have come to realize that my first tri has a slim chance of happening. My injuries are bigger than I originally thought. My PT finally isolated my knee pain. It is my lateral meniscus rather than ITBS. I do have some tight IT bands as a separate problem. I am almost positive that the meniscus problem was from poor squat form. A day late and a dollar short. My hip flexor on my left side is fine. The pain I have had in that area is impingement from femoral anterior glide syndrome. Same thing that I used to get on the right side all the time but was misdiagnosed. My plan (I love a good plan!) is to rehab my injuries and work on the weak areas. Then find a run coach to help me with form and injury prevention. Now that I have a plan hopefully I can stop crying. I am off to go lick my wounds. Be careful with strength training and listen to your bodies!

Edited to fix paragraphs.  Stupid phone! Everything just gets lumped together instead of doing paragraphs.

Really sorry to hear about your injuries.  What's the plan to rehab them?

Thanks for the well wishes.  I sure could use a nice trip like Suzy's right about now.  Tongue out I don't have a solid plan yet.  Going to see a doc about my knee on Wednesday.  Seems like rehab for meniscus injuries is to strengthen the quads down by the knee.  Mine are weaker on my injured side.  The injury doesn't seem bad so I can't imagine I need surgery.  Just need rest to get the swelling down.  Hopefully strengthening up my right leg and getting my IT band stretched out will stop my knee from collapsing in when I run.  As far as the hips go, the PT and I still need to discuss that one as we ran out of time when she discoverd it.  From my research it sounds like I need to address glute strength and activation.  I know from experience that the pain will subside with a few weeks rest from running.  Also, I just spoke to a facility here in Tucson that can do a very in depth run form analysis.  I will do that first thing when I ready to run again.

Take care, everyone!

RR is available as a short distraction for those who may have to work on President's Day (or anyone who wants to read it).

As an aside, I had my first ride outdoors on my tri bike today.  It was a little tricky in the wind, but otherwise enjoyable - certainly better than the trainer.  The complementary fit I got with it is going to need some adjustments, but otherwise I'm good to go.

Congrats to Caleb, Julia and David on your races!!

Trevor: glad to hear that you had a better cruise experience than those other folks that were in the news last week.

Margo: good luck getting it all sorted out.  It may take a while, but you will end up with a stronger, balanced muscle base.

I have very little to report from the land of the beautiful.  Paul and I left the condo early to do our favorite hike and the closer we got to the trail head the more it started raining.  By the time we got out of the car it was pouring and the canyon was totally fogged in. Got back in the car to drive to our favorite beach where it was clear an hour earlier and the winds were now a gusty 35mph and it had started raining.  Back in the car to the condo to ponder the day.  I did sneak a swim in the unheated kidney shaped pool, but that's about the extent of the excitement.  Had lunch, shopped for a new swimsuit for the man and called it a day.  Of course now, it' sunny, but still very, very windy.  Here's to tomorrow.

PS. No complaints, it's still nicer here than in Madison!

Thanks, I was looking for this disclaimer.  Rain into snow here last night and currently 18 degrees with 24 mph winds this AM.  Windchill is about Minus 8 and every road is pretty much a skating rink.

Now, what about that beach?  Laughing

Hi gang,  Greetings to those who know me and have wondered where the heck I've been.  It's a brand new year and things seem a bit more manageable.  I am week 3 into my new HIM training plan.  So far, so good.  Looking forward to some revenge on the James River and a new PR this summer.

And hi, to the newbies in the group.  In a very short synopsis, my name is Samantha D'Alessio.  I live in VA just outside of DC and have been doing tris for 5-6 years and as well as a bit of endurance running.  My big goal this year is a big PR at Rev3 Williamsburg.  I have a super supportive family.  Tony (my husband) says hi.  He has been part of the group and tris in years past but focuses on bike racing now.  We have 2 kids (9 yr boy and 6 yr girl).  They are super supportive too.  Both kids have done some tris and we try to run a 5k or two as a family each year.

Sounds like another round of stellar swbkrun weekend results.  We expect nothing less in this group.  ;-

Julia - can you come swim for me in Williamsburg.  Congrats.  Sounds like great cross training for Heartbreak Hill.

Chow for now.  I should try to get some work done.

Dude, there is no beaching it right now.  I'm sitting here at 5:33am and it is pouring.  We have friends arriving tomorrow night and I would hate for them to be in the land of lovely and sitting inside the condo.  When the weather sucks in HI, it sucks. Enough said.

Welcome back Sam!!!!  I have every faith in you and I am sure Julia would be happy to give you a swim tip or two for your HIM!

SAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So nice to see you here!!!

Checking in from the sunshine in Arizona (don't hate, Suzy, it's supposed to rain tomorrow here). All's well during the kiddo/grandparent vacation. So far we've done lots of R&R, which suits everyone just fine. We've hit up my fave Mexican restaurant once, and I plan to get back 1-2 more times before we leave. I'm working on a knitting project that I've wanted my mom's help on, and we have a hike on tap later this afternoon. Getting in my runs and enjoying some sunny, dry weather. Had a fabulous 7-mile run with my daughter yesterday. One more long run for her before her 15K on March 3. Life is awesome.

Congrats on the fabulous race results. How are our injured peeps holding up?? Take care of those bodies!!

Cheers to all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah for good times with the family!  I don't hate you for having sunshine.  I hope you have it the whole break.  Believe it or not, it is sunny at the moment!  I had a con call at 6am and another one at 9am HI Time and then I hope to hit a beach even if it is in 30mph winds!

Kyla, if you are in the Tucson area, we love El Charro for mexican food.  Can't remember off the top of my head where it is since we now have one in our little town just south of Tucson.  Good stuff though.  Sorry it is gonna rain for you.  AZ is the only place I know of that can rain when the sun is shining.  Tongue outWe get some awsome rainbows out of it.

Suzy,  bummer that you are having bad weather there!  Hope it gets better soon so you can enjoy your trip.

Samantha, hello!  Nice to "meet" you!  Smile

Here is a funny image for you all.  My DH was getting ready to go out for a bike ride.  First time out with his new Road ID.  I got him a red one for his birthday to match his red and black gear. He was excited about most of his ensamble finally matching when he realized that his bicycle gear actually goes better with his motorcycle than his bicycle.  He then starts talking about riding his motorcycle in his bicycle gear and drafting off of gigged out cyclists.  Man, I would love to see that!

Enjoy your runs, everyone.  I friggin' hate not running.  I should be swimming but am gonna take a nap instead.  How's that for lame?  lol  Things are starting to feel a bit better.  I am sure it will still be a few weeks before I can run.  Maybe I ride my bike sooner.  Will see what the doc and the PT say tomorrow.

5 mile run for me tonight.  I had some pain on the top of my left foot toward the end of the race Sunday and it reappeared about 2/3 of the way through my run tonight.  These two runs are the only time I have felt this and the only runs I have done in compression socks, so that seems to be the most likely cause.  I'm thinking I will try an easy run again Thurs/Fri without them just to check, hoping it's nothing more serious than that.  Anyone else had a similar experience with compression socks?

Where on the top of your foot? are we talking a sharp pain?  I wear compression socks and have had no issues like you describe.

Today the highlight was a monk seal!  This is the first one we've seen this trip.    I took some great video of her sliding down the beach, rolling over and rubbing her belly.  Posted on on FB if you're interested.  So cute.  There are only about 1100 of them in the world today, all native to HI.

About half an inch behind my fourth toe.  It is sharp when I run, but lessens if I slow to a walk.  It becomes more of a discomfort, or dull pain, once I am off my feet or just walking around within an hour of running.  At this point (5 hours later) and without socks, it feels more like a bruised area and had gone away completely from Sunday before I ran again tonight.

Make sure it's not a metatarsal stress fracture, might need a bone scan?

It's that time of the week again....Who's ready to show us what you've got this weekend?

I know, from our introductions, a lot of us have some sort of weight loss goal.  How's it going?  What are you doing to stay on track?  What are you going to do to get back on track?  If you're already at your ideal weight, what's your secret?

David - I've had similar pain when running with my shoes tied too tightly, or when I have new shoes, which tend to be too tight for the first few runs. Did you tighten up your laces for your race?

I am not racing this weekend. Good luck to those who are.

MY weight loss is going slow and steady. I am not really worried about the numbers on the scale. I just want a healthy lifestyle. This for me includes trying to eat healthy and stay away from eating processed foods. I give platelets every two week and love when they do my vitals and pulse. they always ask if I am an athelete 115/60 and pulse mid 50s. That for me means I am accomplishing my goals of being healthy. I would like to see the 180s on the scale just not sure if that is doable but no big deal.

I have been dealing with some minors injuries as of late. The first has been my hip, when I ride it aches but running is fine and swimming is fine not sure what its from. Then last Thursday toward the end of my swim my shoulder started hurting. thought maybe i tweaked it. took most the weekend off and yestersay could barely lift it. I have an appointment today so hope the news is not all bad and they can look at both issues. The hip pain only happens on rides and aches slightly after i have finished. I am stubborn when it come to goin to the doc. I just dont want them to tell me to not do anything. that means i would loose all the progress i have made thus far.

That's precisely why I asked the question.  I had a 4th met stress fracture on the bottom of that area a few years ago. Top is more likely than where I had it.  I've also had a bruise after stepping on a piece of metal.  They do feel exactly the same.  If it is painful, when you run, stop.  Don't test it or poke at it.  David's right, the only thing that will show a break for sure is a bone scan and most doctors don't want to give them as a first course of action.  they'll want to start with an xray which is useless unless the bone has started to heal.  MRI may show nothing when indeed there is an issue.  I would wait it out for at least a week with zero running.  If you run again and it still hurts at the same level, head for medical insight or wait another week to see what happens.  Don't dismiss either way.

I'll show you what i've got this weekend!  Wait, what! Do you mean racing? Cool

I fall within the ideal weight and body fat %, but I'm not currently at my racing weight.  Between less volume and just eating to my IM training level (or close), I put on some extra lbs. in the off-season, roughly 3%. It has happened every year and I am "ok" with it. I have moved from a person who trains to eat, to one who eats to train.  I won't limit calories and sacrifice a workout.  That was a big change for me.  I still eat about 20% fun stuff and 80% good stuff.  I also sleep 7-8 hours and take vitamins.  I believe all of it produces a healthy body.

I recently (like on the plane to HI) read Matt Fitzergerlad's, Optimal Racing Weight, not so much for diet advice as for fueling/recovery insights and I found his advice on nutrient timing helpful.  I plan to incorporate it into my final marathon build as well as IM.

Yes, Julia, I did tighten the laces before the race.  I am praying that and the compression may be the cause.  It feels much better this morning, although still a little sore.

Suzy and David, that is my biggest concern.  I will cut out the running until next week, then try again without the socks.  If it's still hurting, then I am off to the doc.

Thanks for the info!

jfought - 2013-02-20 7:11 AM It's that time of the week again....Who's ready to show us what you've got this weekend?

I know, from our introductions, a lot of us have some sort of weight loss goal.  How's it going?  What are you doing to stay on track?  What are you going to do to get back on track?  If you're already at your ideal weight, what's your secret?

No racing for me.  My weight loss from last year (about 30 lbs) has held steady without too much attention over the past 6-8 months.  I'm starting to focus on it again in an effort to drop 30 more before Augusta in September.  I used the Lose It app last year and it worked great, so I'm going with it again this year.  I found it more forgiving and easier to stick with than the My Fitness app.  The competitive side of me treats it like a daily game to make my numbers come out where I need them to be.  And keeping track of everything really does help with my decisions.
