Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() One hour on the bike (4x8' Sweetspot intervals) followed by a short brick run on the treadmill. Foot felt better than the last time I ran. So excited to think by spring I may be putting regular miles on the run again. Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just got back from my Phys Therapy appointment. The therapist really worked my IT Band and calf. Introduced me to the foam roller and then some yoga poses for stretching better. Anyone have experience with Foam Rollers and an opinion on their worth? Voodoo science or best thing since sliced bread? Mitch I've been using one for a couple of months and they are absolutely worth the money and effort. It was actually recommended by my doctor for my calves and IT band issues. There are also quite a few folks in my local tri group swear by them. I really notice a HUGE decrease in recovery time from runs if I use it immediately after the run. The CSI(Cardio-Strength-Intervals)Class I started back in November also uses it frequently, mostly after a few days of picking on our legs. The instructor has specifically told us to never roll out the lower back. She said it could cause issues with the lower spine. With that being said I LOVE rolling out my upper back, I think I have fallen asleep a few times form being so relaxed. I picked up my rollers on Amazon for around $40 and it came with the knobby-deep massage and the regular smooth foam roller. Stay away from the solid foam as they tend to collapse with repeated use. Both of mine have the PVC core. Edited by sawyer1206 2015-02-20 1:28 PM |

Mitch - I am surprised that you of all people have never used a foam roller!!! like Dennis I use one and have done so for four years, it was recommended by my first coach as a good post workout massages and used it every since - if you can stick out the first two weeks of pain each time you use it you will come to love it. I even upgraded to black firm as the white wasn't doing it anymore. I have never had injuries (touch wood) and I always use the foam roller on my legs post workout. I don't do excessive miles - always use same shoes with ortho inserts and stretch well after workouts. I prefer dynamic stretching for warm ups. Is the roller the reason I am injury free? don't know but I 'feel' i benefit from it and will continue to use it. There are time I notice a 'tight' spot and it hurts like hell to roll it but as you breath through it and continue to roll the pain eases as the roller does its magic. it also works the shoulders nicely as you support your weight. I highly recommend them. |

I had had tightness in my ILT Band and started using for that. I love it for my hamstrings and gluts. PT had daughter #2 start using it when she was having knee issues. She loves it too. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by dgconner154 I also use a lacrosse ball for my glutes/piriformis, scaps, shoulders, etc. I mostly use a lacrosse ball. It is harder and can penetrate deeper than the foam roller - also cheap and long lasting. It is great for working the glutes and TFL - I say that because glute medius and the TFL are the two muscles that connect to the ITB. They are the usual culprits for me when I have pain down around where the ITB connects to the tibia. Got called in again on Sat morning, I sort of go into survival mode when I miss so much sleep. Hoping to get back to normal this week. I hate winter! |
