High Five

I gotta say - I'm struggling with the short distances, so just hearing you've done that... for the SECOND TIME... with improvement to boot, it's really inspiring.  Way to go, Darren!

Maybe no ice tonight, but perhaps there's a massage in your future?

Hope you're feeling great and relaxing with the fam!

Great Job Darren!!! I think we have all been lurking waiting for your post.  I can't even drive for 6 hours straight... Lowering your time by 25 minutes is awesome!!  And for what it's worth after a frozen 50K, the only ice I would want was around my bottle of champagne while getting a massage.

Congrats!

Anyone else here use a Mac that can help with this?

I have a race schedule question... I know some people have made comments on my log but here is the full picture...

Its getting towards the end of the season here and there are three more events Im looking at:

1) Sydney Harbour Swim 1k or 2k option - March 1

2) Challenge Cronulla Enticer Triathlon - 400m/10k (hilly)/2.5k - March 8

3) NBN Triathlon (would be a road trip and overnight stay) - 500m/15K/4K - March 15

I have a friend up for the 1k swim and CG is doing the Enticer race (and I will be going as cheerleader if nothing else)... the NBN race is just a touch shorter than the sprint I did a few weeks ago so would be nice to see how im going when Im not running around after 13 women and wearing myself out pre-race...

But NBN is a bit of a committment because of the drive north/accom etc

Any suggestions on whats best?

After this my season I guess will be basically over and Im looking at doing:

1) My first 100k ride (April-ish)

2) 4k or 8k run event in May

3) Starting race season again late September...

Thoughts, opinions, random musings???? Im just after some outside opinions on what I could/should do.. bo matter what they are!

Depends on time and money I suppose.  I am not a big fan of travelling, have only done it for one race.  If you like it and you will have fun then I say go for it though.  You only live once right.

Oh, so they are super close together.  I mean the 1 or 2k swim, no biggie right.  Although....I guess if you really race it, it will hurt.  Stiff shoulders for the next couple days, but we like the pain right.

Also, you know, 3 races in a row to concentrate on would likely give you a rest from your long rides, although I suppose you could do one on the March 1 weekend.  Ideally you need a break from your long rides, but probably not any more than a one week break.  So, as long as you can put in a longish ride on Feb 28 or March 1 after the race, you can do another one, maybe a 40-50 k on March 8 after the race, then take the weekend of the 15th off, as you are travelling.

I am probably over analysing it though.  If you have the time and money do it.  If it is a stretch, but it means a lot, then do it.  If not, then don't.

If you've got a couple folks for the swim and the local tri, I'd say go for it!  Won't you have a hard time going to the tri as a spectator-only when the last one you did was spent watching over others?  And the swim being a week before should be ok-- I don't usually have problems with recovering from a long swim... but then again swimming is my fav thing.  How long do you take for recovery from a long, challenging swim workout?

The road trip would be fun, but a lot to think about, including arrangements and expenses... if you had an enthusiastic travel companion and some money in your race budget for it, away games can really be fun.  They can, however, be a little lonely without a race-buddy or entourage, though.  I did a 10k in San Diego (about 3,000mi/4,800km from home) while on vacation last spring.  Beautiful run, but I got really overheated and didn't come close to my goal time, which would have been ok with another runner to hang with at the finish or a cheering squad but I had neither, and the crowd was dense enough that I couldn't spot the few nice folks I chatted with briefly on the run.  I ended up hightailing it back to the hotel without any significant post-race socializing.  Might have been different if I had a satisfying run, but I don't always and I didn't that day.

Anyway, my vote's for 1&2.  You're going to be at the shorter local tri and you should do one for yourself, regardless of whether or not it matches the distances of the last one you did, and the hills on the bike will be a good challenge if you're working toward a Century ride.

Wanted to pop in and say hello. I've been entertaining the family this weekend and haven't had much online time.

Congrats on a great race Darren! I love the comment in your RR about letting the people in front pack down the snow for you. Why be the snow plow when others can do it for you.

I hope everyone is having a good start to their week.

I vote race 1 and 3. You should be able to recover from the swim and an overnight trip to race is a great way to close out the season.

Good Afternoon everyone.

So for me, I am looking at a rest/do whatever I want week.  So we will see how it goes.  Going to get a couple runs in, some Karate, maybe a spin on the bike, maybe a swim on Friday.  Lots of maybes.

I now don't have a race until August 2 so that seems like a lot of time.  I should have April-July to train for it.  I still want to work on my running.  I am thinking that is key for a good result at my HIM.  The way I figure it, 3 hour bike, 30 minute swim, 2 hour run.  The swim is in the bag, I think.  The bike, I will have to work on a bit but not too too much concidering my full iron was 7 hours.  The stumbling block is that run.  It just hurts so much.

Last year at this 50k I did 7 hours, and I did 7 hours at my HIM in June that year.  hmmmmmm.

Anyways, take it easy this week, crank it up a bit for the next, then the baby comes and I get a month to consider things.

 Have a good week everyone.

I think you could do 1-3. The enticer race w/o being mother hen over everyone would be more enjoyable and let you focus on you.

#3 is great but more costly which I'm not sure if it is a concern over.

You've trained and getting 2 more tris in before the end of the season seems like a real positive for you.

Running and cycling events after tri season I see them as cool things we do with our fitness. What ever excites you, do!

Definitely the swim, you rock that!  The enticer race would be good with CG for a shorter distance but the somewhat longer one is a good comparison to the last ace you did.  Factoring in travel fees and food again with the race fees that may be the deciding factor.  Travel races don't come cheap when you look at those issues.  The century will be great, you love your bike and a run alone race will help build confidence on the run issues
