tri-dg - 2010-07-26 9:52 PM 5 weeks out. I have a question on what i should do this weekend. there is a century ride on sunday in my area. I am planed to do a 5:45 ride that should be about a 108 miler for me on saturday and on sunday Im supposed to do a 4 HR 1 HR brick (74 miles and 7 miles). should i do the brick on saturday and do the century plus some on sunday or do the long ride saturday and then do the 70 mile option at the century ride and a 7 mile brick? Im also supposed to do a 3800 swim sunday.

Normally I don't think it matters very much if you switch the weekend long stuff every now and then, but I don't think I would this time.  That looks like a key workout weekend to me, and it's probably important to do it in that order.

You are going to be tired come Monday morning.

It also states that this week in Louisville is supposed to be "cool" and the high temperatures are 5-7 degrees above normal. I am also hoping for the almanac to be correct for race day, but it has been a might off this summer on its predictions.

I'm back home from running the San Francisco Marathon on Sunday.  It was my girlfriend's first mary and we ended up around 4:25 so 10:xx pace.  Good times; tough course.  It was a lot hillier than she expected.  Temp at start was 54°  and probably only warmed up into the mid 60s by finish.  With my fitness level I was able to throw in the marathon at her pace without any problems.  I ice bathed after the race and then did my scheduled 90min spin the next day.  Today I was back out for an hour run as if nothing happened.

That's what I was hoping for.  I honestly don't put anything into this, but after looking at it, it was right on for the winter here in the south.  Maybe it is because the past is always easy to "predict".

This is what I'm curious about. I hate swimming, but feel confident and comfortable enough doing it during a race. I understand that ideally I would be swimming 20k-30k, but I just don't like doing it as training, so I try to make up for it on the bike and runs.

Can anyone relate, and is my logic that I made up for the fitness enough to make it through?

Sidenote, the 10,000 meters is a 3,800 / 3,000 / 3,200 -- so I am doing long distance swims.

i would at least throw in 1 more swim per week. do some threshold or interval work. Just get the training in and make it count.

i have done 3x per week this year for a half and training for louisville as well as 3x and 2x last year for 2 separate half's and times were same. so i would think that 2 x per week would be good

You are looking for advice from a lazy slacker swimmer?

I'm your man!

I get really bored with swimming, and it takes a lot of determination to get my swims in.  I tend to really slack off until the final 8 weeks and then I try and hit the pool like crazy.  Try for 6-8,000 meters a week until we are one week out.  You need to get in the pool asap if you want a good race.  The swim sets it all up, and if you are tired coming out of the water it will impact your bike and then your run. Think of it like this:  The swim is the easy part.  How good is your day going to be if you are tired after the easy part?

So how do you get yourself in the pool?  Jedi mind tricks.  First, set your goal for the week, and then tell yourself that you can not swim or bike at the end of the week unless you are on track to meet it.  You can skip today's swim, but you'll just have to add a swim in somewhere.  Try and create an attitude where you feel like you can't get out of swimming.  Next, you need to be afraid.  140.6 miles is a long way, and if you screw it up you will spend some time in the hurt locker.  How much time you spend depends on your fitness.  I'm soft like a kitty cats under belly, and I focus on getting to the painful part as late into the race as possible.  Sure you can walk on the run, but trust me, that hurts too and it just takes longer.

Remind yourself when you are in the water that you might be bored, but that is a lot better than pain.  Tell yourself that you can get out after 1500 meters, but you will just be back in the pool tomorrow.

I just looked ahead and I don't have any bricks scheduled.  I think in this entire plan they only had me do one or two bricks and any others I did were because I threw in a race or because I needed to schedule them as a brick to fit them in.  I'm not worried about it, but it just seems weird.

OK, it's time to work on the plan.  How is the nutrition, clothing, and packing list coming along?

One month!

OK, it's time to work on the plan.  How is the nutrition, clothing, and packing list coming along?

Plan:  I don't trust it, I'm worried that I'll not be doing enough on the weekends leading up to the race.  Especially the weekend of August 14th.  Two weeks out seems like enough time that I should be squeezing in another 100 mile ride.  4 consecutive weeks w/o a 100 mile ride is going to start playing with my confidence.

Nutrition:  my nutrition plan is rock solid.  One really bad bonk and a couple tough finishes on the long rides really helped me tweak my plan.

Clothing:  Starting to think about it but have not made a final decision yet.

Packing list:  Not on the radar yet...should start compiling a list.

Hello all,
been following the thread and impressed with all the info.  what got me to the site was this issue with the tacks on the road.  is anybody out there going to or planning to use tubbies?  I am rethinking this now that the tack issue is a factor.  Any thoughts?

De Soto just released their WTC legal non rubberized speedsuit that can be worn as a trisuit.  Great option for people that want something extra in the water.  No pockets though.

Going to the orthopedist for the verdict on my knee tomorrow. Should still be able to race (hopefully), but my run/walk strategy may be reduced to a walk strategy.

Wish me luck.

No official practice swim, but the email I received from the race organizers is you can swim at your own risk though.
