Janet Evans: Sooooo inspiring.... much more so than Dara Torres, IMO!! (But then I've always respected the distance athletes more than the sprinters -- what can I say? I'm biased, but happy to admit it.)

It also shows that if you train like you once did (as much as life permits), you might surprise yourself. That said, I'm not willing to put 15+ hours/week into the pool at this point in my life!!

Soo cool that she is getting back into the mix of things.  She was inspiring to me when I was competing in the pool at that time in the 80's and she'll continue to be an inspiration to me now.

Anyone else consider your children to be little plague factories?  Seriously, they start by getting sick themselves, making you wake up multiple times a night (and as a stay at home mom, I'm usually the one that gets up with them, unless it's the weekend).  That way, they deprive you of sleep.  Your immune system is knocked down and you have no defense when their germs move in on you.  Then, when you feel horrible, they get all their energy back and want to play, play, play.

The only saving grace is, it is now the weekend, so I can trade sleep with my husband.  Training has been almost non-existent this week.

I affectionately call my youngest "the walking Petri dish"

That is where mine came from. Completely derailed my marathon plan. It is still better for me to be sick than them. Breaks my heart to listen to them cough.

gotta run - 2012-01-14 11:13 AM

John (jslacker) and I were talking about swim sets on our group run this morning, so I thought I'd post a callout. Anyone else have some favorites they'd like to share? Maybe we can all get some new ideas!

Here are some of my favorite main sets, to which I add 400-800 yards warmup and 200 yards cooldown. I swim all my sets on fixed intervals, so I get more rest if I swim faster and less rest if I'm slower. Disclaimer: I'm not a coach, I don't have a coach, and I don't play a coach on TV. These are just sets I like.

Endurance:

20 x 100 on an interval that provides ~5 seconds rest and is challenging to make for the full set. Goal is to hold a strong, consistent pace throughout the set without losing form.

ladder set: 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 400, 300, 200, 100 on an X:XX/100 interval that provides ~5 sec rest per 100. Goal is to swim faster on the way back down the ladder.

Speed:

4 x 200 EBEH (1st 200 Easy, 2nd 200 Build, 3rd 200 Easy, 4th 200 Hard), 2 x (4x100 EBEH) - the interval on these should provide ~20 seconds rest after the hard efforts

3 x (5x100 hard), with 50 recovery between sets - the interval for the 1st set should provide ~20 seconds rest, increasing to ~25 and 30 for the 2nd and 3rd sets. Try to hold the same pace for all 3 sets.

Since I just got back in the water after 3 months out and I don't have enough freestyle endurance to swim any of these sets right now, I'm doing shorter sets and mixing in other strokes and short kick sets to give my arms recovery time, which helps me swim longer workouts without having my form totally fall apart.

Did you stay at a Holiday Inn last night?  Great running with you this morning Julia.  This morning's run kicked my butt.  Never go with Travis when he surges.

Thanks for the swim workout, I can't wait to try it.

Any other good swim sets people have found that increases their speed?

I keep checking the Ironman St George Volunteer page.  First it said that they would open on Jan 1. Now it says:

"Volunteer Registration for the 2012 Ironman St. George is coming soon! Please check back for updates"

What do y'all think is a great place to volunteer?

Not joining in on the taking kids to races debate.  I'll just add that I agree it's what is best for your family.

John and I volunteered at the finish line (6-9) at IMFL this year.  It got cold, and believe it our not it was kinda hard.  Loved it, so many emotions.  But after our shift we went home and went to bed, didn't even go back for the midnight finishers.  We talked about what we thought would be prime volunteer spots - body marking if you want ealry morning an mixing with all the excitement and adrenaline.  Another idea is registration for the following year (day after the race).  Stay away from any type of finish line food job.  I heard plenty of not-so-nice things with that job.

Great swim thread, Julia!

I'll need to go back through my logs and see what sets I've enjoyed over the past few years.

When I am in good shape, I always love doing sets of 100's on incresingly fast intervals, for example:

20x100 (5 on 1:35/5 on 1:30/5 on 1:25/5 on 1:20) -- where the last 5 you make it with 2-3 seconds rest and you just hang on for the duration of the set. The key, as Julia mentioned, is pacing. Start off moderate and comfortable, you shouldn't be really "feeling it" until around 12 or 13, but you know you can make the set. The last 5 you aren't so sure you can make it, but you hang on and you do. It's awesome.

I remember last year doing sets of 300's, that I loved. I think it was usually something like 6x300 where the first 3 are moderately hard and you build to all-out by the last one. I love trying to hit a time on #4 that seems hard to go any faster, and then finding enough to go faster on #5 and then crush it on #6. Clearly a set like that happens after a few months of steady swim work where you have endurance and speed and a good pacing feel.

Love something like a timed 2K, pacing the 500's and trying to go each one a wee bit faster.

Always enjoy ladders, 100-200-400-800-400-200-100 or 100-200-300-400-500-500-400-300-200-100... Always try to go faster coming down than going up. Pick an interval early on to hold, and the longer the distance, the more rest you SHOULD get, if you are pacing properly!

One of my no-longer-secret goals for this year is to knock out one of Hillary Biscay's 100x100 swim challenge workouts. I've been thinking about how I'm going to get there -- not quite sure yet. I'm also thinking of what pool I'd like to use for that -- I hate the narrow lanes at my local Y and if I had to share a lane with more than one person I might get frustrated. I'd love to find an awesome outdoor pool, with nice wide lanes, deep water, good lane lines, and enjoy every stroke of the set (Stanford's pool in Palo Alto comes to mind...). Maybe I can find a pool in Arizona over the summer if we do a trip there... I might build up to this challenge by trying to do 30x100, then a couple weeks later, 40x100, etc. Getting to 50 doesn't seem too hard. It's the next 50 I'm mentally struggling with... Wanna read more about 100x100? Check out Hillary's Q&A here.

Snow just started coming down... Oh happy day!!!!

How do I get so far behind on here? Just wanted to let you know that I'm still alive and have been enjoying the posts on the past 3 or 4 pages. I enjoyed hearing everyone's "take" on having their kids at their long races.

Janet Evans Rocks.

Happy Birthday, John. Sorry about that Rudolph "thing"

I've had a good week of training this week.  I had one more swim planned, but hit everything else.

I'm struggling to figure out how to incorporate HM run training into my triathlon training plan.  The stand alone HM run plans have you running 4-5 times a week, and I just can't run 5x/week and also bike, swim, lift, do my run drills, yada yada.

I know this topic has come up before, but I must not have been paying attention.  I feel like I'm just muddling through and making things up as I go.  Once the HM is completed at the end of March, I can focus on a standard tri plan, but until then I need to make adjustments.

LOL, we say this all the time.  I think the kids all lick each other to pass the germs around.

I wonder if your problem is too much intensity in the workouts prior to the long run itself since the long run should be at a somewhat easier pace.   Anyway, with 10.73 miles, you're ahead of me.
