Training Question:

I have one more tri this season -- September 8 (I think), then I turn to a run-focused schedule. I need to get back to building up my run mileage after our trip to Colorado, so here's what I'm thinking. How does it look?

Swim 2-3 sessions a week (30-45 minutes each) -- 500m lake swim

Bike 3 sessions a week (two 12 mile and one 15-20 mile) -- 10-11 mile route.

Run 6 sessions a week, following the Barry P 3-2-1 principle -- 3 short; 2 medium; and 1 long. -- 5k

Once September 8 is over, I will throw the bike on the trainer and ride inside a couple times a week for 45-60 minutes. I want to continue swimming 2-3 times a week because it feels so good, and I don't want to lose the little progress I have made. I will stick with the Barry P 3-2-1 plan, slowly increasing mileage every other week.

Weight Loss Question:

My weight has been really stagnate this season -- holding at about 138. I almost died when I saw my race photos from this weekend. I mean I know -- I've had three c-sections; I am 51; I'm pre/peri menopausal. My body is changing. I get all that. But I used to way 30 pounds more than I do now, and I swear, I look horrible. My middle is HUGE. I tried to comfort myself that everyone looks bad in a one piece tri-suit (especially in an aero position on the bike), but seriously, I could see my c-section "ledge." (scar tissue junk.)

I understand that it's difficult to lose weight while you are actively training, but I really need to try to lose 15-20 pounds this off season. Advice? What's the best way to approach this. I know how to eat heathfully, but I also need to fuel my run workouts (especially). What do you all do about nutrition/weight loss during the off season?

Well let me start with this: I am SURE you don't look awful or huge or any of those negative things. Also, don't eat nuggets for training runs.

I will say, my successes came from adjusting my diet; not so much the training. Try not to even think of your training or use it as justification for eating certain things.

Keep in mind, when it comes to nutrition everyone is different. It's also not easy. All the marketing around products that are "healthy" makes it very difficult to make the right decisions.

The first thing I did was did the calculation for how many calories that my body burns in a typical day, ie your basal metabolic rate (BMR) This excludes workouts.

Once I knew how many calories I was burning I started a food log for a few weeks (2 at a minimum.) Don't cheat yourself. Log EVERYTHING. You will quickly see where the bulk of your calories are coming from.

Once you know all this information, I feel you are pretty well armed to make changes.

The biggest changes for me:

Avoid overly processed foods (duh) You can eat a lot more when you are eating "real" food.

Cook as many meals as possible. Going out makes it extremely difficult to control what you are consuming.

Don't restrict anything. A diet is not sustainable. You need to make changes that you can keep up and you should be allowed a beer every now and again.

I'm watching team synchro swimming right now.

Those chicks are HOT and those moves are insanely difficult.

That's how I feel about Team Rhythmic Gymnastics I watched yesterday.

Also, I might have a girl crush on Allyson Felix.

I saw her first. Stand in line behind me. I even told my husband, "I really like Felix." She's so awesome.

You can't share?

My husband and I were watching the relays and decided Felix was by far the hottest American for both women's relays.

I have watched the ribbon gymnastics before but never saw the ball routine.  Wow--I think I just happened to turn on the TV when the World Champ was on, but it was absolutely amazing.  I couldn't believe the moves she was doing, while throwing, bouncing, catching the ball.  Some serious athleticism!

DH and I went to a bistro/brewery (interesting combination, no?) after hitting the farmers market yesterday after church.  We couldn't hear the TV's across the room but we could see the gymnasts doing their routines with the balls. We'd never seen anything like it before and wondered what it was! Challenging to synchronize that no doubt!

Yeah.  I told him I'd put it on my wishlist right after my custom Seven titanium road bike.

I tried it with House blend.  Next time I'm going to have to spring for the Oahu like the guy in front of me.  I did not know about Starbucks Reserve stores and it probably would have been better if it stayed that way.

OK, so I've been contemplating joining a masters program.  I was at my normal pool (near work) last week and picked up a flyer for the masters group that meets there.  I looked online and there fees are $86/mo for 1 day a week, $150/mo for 2 days a week and $192/mo for 3 days a week.  Now as much as I'd like to improve my swim that's just CRAZY!

So the pool close to my house has flyers up for the masters program there.  Their fees are $40 per month for three 1-hr sessions per week, only one per week with a coach on deck.

Thoughts?

holy cow that's insane.  I pay to go into the pool $5 (though if you're a member of that gym it's free) and I pay Johnny $6.  It started as a Masters but he broke away to do his own thing...

Wow - for that money I want to win a medal.

I guess I can just ask it in here, actually.  There have been quite a few comments recently that say this:

I actually laughed at your response, then it dawned on me that that post is probably where the rest of TT and training in general is heading for good.  The uninformed (who don't realize how uninformed they really are) educating the uninformed (who genuinely want to learn) as the experienced folks continue to be shoved aside.

or something similar.  Why is this?  What is happening here that is making the more experienced people not want to post?  Is it because their posts are sometimes 'controversial'?  (I don't consider them that, I think that anything that sparks discussion is good, assuming it is done respectfully).  Is it because they give asked-for advice, but it is not what the ask-er wants to hear?

That's funny but too true. I just got done at my regular pool and found out they are raising prices. It will cost me as much to swim there two days a week as ut would to go to the Masters program.

First of all, lol, we stalk the same mentor group.

Second, I don't know exactly. I've also been trying to figure it out. Bryancd was banned, and he was amazing. A little snarky sometimes, but always very good information and from what I can tell, a decent guy. I miss his insight. I miss Scout. Whatever happened to him/her?

I remember the thread that Bryan started about IM St. George, where he volunteered to field questions from people. I thought it was a great gesture, but a few people posted stating that they were offended by his "arrogance." Ummm. He qualified for Kona. I think he knows something. But some people didn't want to hear it.

I think your last statement is also true. Someone in TT asks, "How can I get a faster running time?" We all know the answer is to run more (mostly easy, sometimes hard), but someone will look at the OP's logs and see they are logging 10-12 miles a week, and tell them that they need to run more (25-30, minimum), create a base, blah, blah, blah . . . and the OP (or someone else) will say, "Hey, this is just a hobby. We're not professionals . . ." So, the OP doesn't get the response he/she wants, which is something like, I don't know, eat a Clif bar before every workout, or something equally ridiculous, but easy.

And, as they say, if I had a dollar for every time somebody posts "Well, this is beginner triathlete . . ." . . . .

Lord help the rest of us if everyone with experience bails. Honestly, I've started lurking at Slowtwitch. It's mostly ridiculous bantering, but sometimes great questions get asked and the responses are good. Even Bryancd still posts over there. :-)

I'd like to hear what others, who have been around longer, think.

I'm on the slow road, for sure. I've been going through this now for three years (or more). Right now insomnia and hot flashes are killing me. Actually, they aren't. But they are annoying. My tactic now is just to go with it. For instance, I was teaching Sunday School yesterday, and a hot flash came on -- and I mean fast -- within a minute I was drenched in sweat, even my arms were wet. I just took a deep breath, told myself "this will pass," and kept going.

I didn't go to bed last night until 4:00 a.m. I tried. I made a really good effort, but just got up, did some reading, took a bath, played some solitaire, and finally fell asleep on the couch.

But sometimes, I just want to curl up in a ball and cry.

I'd like to hear what others, who have been around longer, think.

I don't stalk the other groups, just this one coz i get everything I need from here.  I still go onto the Beginner HIM group - popsracer is a legend.

I too liked bryancd - he was a little controversial but had time for everyone.  I am of the view if you ask for advice be prepared to get a little criticism - it's generally constructive.  You don't have to take it on board if you don't like it!

Slow Twitch, mmm I don't mind but they are a little full of it!

I sometimes read some fo the Triathlon talk if it looks like it might be of relevance.  But the Manatees is the best!!!  By far!

My run photo

Ben's run photo

My Bike Photo

I hope I've got these right now.

a thousand or more 51 year olds would kill for that body.  Doesn't look bad at all.  I have some hideous bike pictures too - not concentrating on holding it all in at that point in a race and have usually over hydrated to the point of sloshing!

Menopause sucks - I'm approaching it fast, so moody!!!  BUT I'm still faster than anyone on the couch!

I have the night sweats going on - just makes me laugh, I wake up coz I'm cold where the sweat is drying - I've never changed my bedlinen so much!  The mood swings are dreadful though, it's only a day or so but I'm inconsolable.  Oh well - more to come I'm sure!  And to think we manage to do triathlon while going through this cr*p, we truly are remarkable.

And finally I can report a successful Channel crossing.  The kid the other guys all bagged and tormented coz of his youth and arrogance and lack of training discipline - well he did it.  The cockiness won through!  12hours and 10 mins.

He stopped training with them coz they upset him.  and now look - they are eating their words!  His quote for the day was "pain is just weakness of the mind".

Well done Richard Keir - so damn proud.
