Master 3022 | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed JBacarella - 2013-01-20 10:12 AM My race report is done. One thing I didn't include, Last year when I ran it there was one dumba$$ with a massive chest and a 6 pack who ran in only shorts and no shirt. At mile 12 he passed me, in an ambulance. It was 12 F out. This year he showed up in the same attire. It was 32 F with a rain snow mix. RD told him he had to wear a shirt. He fought them on it, and he discovered his mistake (it thought the mistake was the large muscles and 6 pack to compensate for the small cranium and the smaller .....). He put on a shirt, but then said at the first turn he would take the shirt off, which he did. Again this year he passed me at mile 12ish. This year it was in a truck, they pulled him off the course. You can't help stupid. Jim - congrats on an awesome PR! Great Job! |

Transitioning to the longer bike and full marathon, what are the suggestions for socks on the bike and any shoe/sock recommendations for the run? Currently I run in Zoot Ultra TT 4.0. Nikki runs in KSwiss Blade Light. I can't address IM but I can address Zoot's. I've used Zoots for 4 years and gone sockless, until I ran a marathon. I panicked and wore socks for that and it was a huge mistake. Once my feet swelled, my shoes with socks on were too tight. I would have been better off using body glide and going sockless. Zoots really arn't made for socks and if you do wear them buy shoes that are a size larger or you will lose a few toe nails. Mine are almost normal again from my June marathon. Since you already run sockless you have already created calluses on your feet at the hot spots in your shoes. Unless you buy a different model or brand that is not going to change. I don't where socks for my bike shoes either, I have very little rubbing, its never been a problem. |

I actually don't wear socks on the bike at all unless it is cold out. The run and socks is something I am wondering about too as it seems not matter what socks I wear, I get blisters running a half marathon. I've heard that there are some smart wool socks that work really well to prevent blisters but I have not tried them. |

I have always trained and raced sockless for everything, including 70.3. Transitioning to the longer bike and full marathon, what are the suggestions for socks on the bike and any shoe/sock recommendations for the run? Currently I run in Zoot Ultra TT 4.0. Nikki runs in KSwiss Blade Light. I have never worn socks on the bike, even for my IM. That's how I trained and did all my long rides and I have never really had any issues. For the run, I always have problems with blisters on the sides on my toes, so I now use the toe-sock style running socks. I debated the extra 20-30 seconds it would take to get toe-socks on instead of regular running socks and I still went with the toe socks at my IM. No blisters and I didn't regret my decision. Whichever way you decide to go, make sure that's how you train as well. If you can get away with a 16-18 mile long run without socks then you're probably ok at the Iron distance. |
