I have been dealing with some minors injuries as of late. The first has been my hip, when I ride it aches but running is fine and swimming is fine not sure what its from. Then last Thursday toward the end of my swim my shoulder started hurting. thought maybe i tweaked it. took most the weekend off and yestersay could barely lift it. I have an appointment today so hope the news is not all bad and they can look at both issues. The hip pain only happens on rides and aches slightly after i have finished. I am stubborn when it come to goin to the doc. I just dont want them to tell me to not do anything. that means i would loose all the progress i have made thus far.
Got back from the doc and nothing major going on. Just told me to cut back a bit and if not better in a month make another apt. I love waisting money on copays for nothing. |

New user 9 | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed jfought - 2013-02-20 6:11 AM It's that time of the week again....Who's ready to show us what you've got this weekend? I know, from our introductions, a lot of us have some sort of weight loss goal. How's it going? What are you doing to stay on track? What are you going to do to get back on track? If you're already at your ideal weight, what's your secret?
I haven't chimed in here for a while, but I have my first bike race of the season! It is Chilly Hilly in Bainbridge, WA this Sunday and it is a 33 mile ride with 2,650 feet of climbing. My training has been running focused and not bike focused. Hopefully the running will translate to an easier bike ride. As for weight, I have been trying to keep my weight at a certain level. During the week, I run about an hour a day and am constantly eating healthier foods, but can't seem to keep the weight on. In order to keep my weight constant, I have been eating junk on the weekends. Is this normal? What do you guys do to ensure you are not losing weight during training? |

I had one of those scary wtf is wrong with the top of my ankle???? on a run last week and it turned out to be a shoelace thing. TG! But, like those two smart peeps pointed out, err on the side of caution. Manny- I had that problem training for IM a few years back. I started drinking a protein drink before bedtime, especially if I had an early morning workout planned (except for long runs, I rarely eat in the morning pre-workout). I believe you want a whey isolate for better absorption into the muscles... I have been a pretty steady weight now for the past few years, I think it is because I am a creature of habit and eat pretty well...maybe like Suzy, 80% good and 20%less good! I am a little bit lactose intolerant so can't eat as much cheese and ice cream as I would like, and I think that helps me out a lot. Still no racing for me, but good luck to everyone who is toeing the line! |

Can I ask what type of doctor you saw? I have found that gp's who do not participate in SBR often dismiss things as overuse, tell you to rest it and then when you go back to workout out you haven't really solved the problem and it returns. Did the dr. do any strength tests to look for muscle imbalances? how did they diagnose? |

I am down about 6 lbs. It is coming off slowly which is not a bad thing. I know I can do better. Weekends are the killer for me. I have been doing better and trying to stay clear of the too many beers and a whole lotsa pizza. No racing for me yet. |

I went and saw an orthopedic doctor. HE did xrays and test on both my hip and shoulder. the test included him moving both parts to see if there was obvious pain and of course little to none. Tuesday I could barely move my arm and yesterday almost no pain at all. MY hip is just an ache and usually come when I ride but doesnt ache when running weird I know. He said maybe tendonitis in my shoulder and gave me some exercises to do for my shoulder but none for my hip.
I guess the question now is how long do I rest? I planned on taking the rest of the week off then seeing how it felt next week when I do the workouts next week. I feel like I cant afford to take time off. I guess its better to take a few days than to be sidelined for the whole season. For my hip I might need to get refitted on my bike. The first few months I rode I had very little pain, maybe something is just a little bit off. |

The first few months I rode I had very little pain, maybe something is just a little bit off. Pain early in training would suggest to me that something isn't right about your fit or your cleat placement or your pedal stroke. You shouldn't have body pain from just riding. It's the first thing I would get checked out. Have a good fitter look at you asap. The hip is a big area, where exactly is the issue? TFL? glute? psoas? sometimes a stuck/tight muscle or tendon is the culprit and needs to be worked on. As far as the shoulder goes, same question? do you include any backstroke in your swimming? I am no fish, but even I have at least 50-100y to make sure that I don't get rotator issues. Edited by SSMinnow 2013-02-21 9:38 AM |

Linda, go get em! It's good to hear about others racing. I hope it goes well for you.
I had my appointment yesterday with an orthopedic surgeon for my knee. Ended up just seeing his nurse practitioner but overall I was happy with the visit. I feel like N.P.'s do a better job than a doc a lot of times. They took x rays which of coarse didn't show anything other than healthy knees. That is good. Never want to find out that I am bone on bone. NP thought my symptoms sounded more like chondromalacia than a meniscus tear. I disagree. My patella are tracking laterally but I still feel that I did something to that knee while doing squats incorrectly. What ever. She gave me a cortisone injection into the knee joint which would treat swelling from either condition. The plan is to go back in two weeks for a follow up. If things aren't better then we do an MRI. I agree with the plan. Gotta say I was a pansy about the injection. Twas a bit scary!

I am not sure exactly where the issue in the hip is. I think its where it meets the pelvis, sometimes the pain rolls into the pelvis region. I am going to take my bike back to the shop tomorrow and see if they can refit me. I havent been incorpoarting the backstroke but will do so to see if that helps. |

David: when I have pain on the top of my foot, I look to the muscles on the outside of the shin. Take a look at the Extensor Digitorum Longus description and picture in the attached link. It connects to the tendons running into the 4 smaller toes.
Mike: by any chance do you breathe mostly or only to one side and have a problem with the opposite shoulder? I had lots of problems with my left shoulder a couple years back (I only breathe to the right side). It was caused by pushing down hard to try to support myself while breathing, i.e., it was a technique problem. I agree with Suzy on learning about your body. Check out these two links for the hip:
Margo: big "dislike" on the cortisone. Those shots hurt like heck (I've had a couple over the years) and there is quite a bit of research to indicate they are really not helpful (rather harmful) in the longer term. Google cortisone and do a little reading. I usually head to a PT or Massage Therapist when I have aches and pains. |

I was going to do a 90km loop I've done before out into the hills and back along the coast, it's incredibly scenic and has lots of hills. I guessed it would take just over 3 hours. Anyway, the first 2 hours were great, I felt really strong and hills that I normally struggle with felt easy. As I went through a little village I stood to get up a short incline and the chain did a huge jump and I nearly came off. I stopped and had a quick look and it seemed like the chain was on the wrong cog for the position of the rear derailleur. I flicked it across and set off but from then on I just couldn't get any speed up despite pushing hard and the next few climbs seemed almost impossible. I seriously thought I might be bonking and so I ground on until I got to the next village and got a couple of iced coffees. I turned the bike upside down and found that the rear wheel skewer had come loose and the wheel wasn't in its cradle, it was also leaning at an angle jamming it against the rear brake. I couldn't even turn it by hand. Once I fixed it I set off the final 25km's home and it felt like I was on a motorbike! It took me nearly an hour longer than planned and my legs are trashed. I'm hoping the strength training benefit will be huge! |

I went through something similar about a year or so ago and did the same thing you did, i.e., I did a quick stop/check and proceeded to plow away even though my rear wheel was off center and rubbing badly. Lesson learned? Spend a good 5-10 minutes checking over everything when you have one of those aw $hit moments. |

A good sports massage therapist can do wonders for the body and as I get older really keeping up with some sort of stretching/yoga/flexibility training also helps. When I was doing some heavy run mileage, I went regularly and I felt my recovery was aided by the constant "working out" various knots and imbalances. I hope everyone has a great weekend. Weather is supposed to be craptacular here but most of our activities are indoors.

If you don't get the skewer in straight and tight, it is common. I couldn't even turn the pedals. PS. Iced coffee to come off a bonk? really? I assume it's loaded with sugar? otherwise, not the best choice, especially since you won't be using it for your IM! |
