A handgun is not the same big issue that a rifle is....you just have to get used to moving the gun a bit further to the left.......he should be shooting with both eyes open anyway so he'll automatically want to find the spot in front of his face where the left eye takes over. I takes a bit of practice, like anything, but I won alot of shooting competitions as a young man being cross eye dominant. Not a big deal to overcome. That's what I've been thinking. He's completely comfortable with shotgun, rifle, and archery shooting left handed. (He just moved up from .410 to a 20 gauge this weekend. The .410 was his squirrel gun. Now that he can handle the 20 gauge I'll take him out to the trap clinic our club has each week) He hasn't shot much revolver yet, a .22, and no pistol other than some airsoft. He wants to naturally grip them right handed. My youngest guy also seems to be left eye dominant. (I've done one of the the eye dominance test with him a number of times but haven't been 100% sure) He's too young in my opinion to be on a shotgun, but he's shooting a .22 rifle. Every time out so far, I had him on it right handed and he seems uncomfortable. Had him just hold it left handed on a bench at home and he seems much more comfortable. I could also see at the archery range a couple weeks ago that he was using his left eye to aim his right handed recurve. I'm no expert by any means. So if it's best in any way for both of them to shoot everything left handed, that's what I'll have them do. Grip is VERY important in pistol shooting....arguably the most important. If he wants to naturally grip right handed I would let him......much easier to get over the left eye dominance thing than to try to get muscle memory for a left handed grip if you are doing everything else in life with a right handed grip. That's kind of my thought too. I'd even go one step further to say that trigger control is even more important than grip. Trigger control gets the first shot on target and grip is for the follow up shots. Both very important though. For a kid, grip is the base...it just is. After you learn to shoot then trigger control overtakes grip...in fact, we drill by pulling the trigger WITHOUT any grip at all....just use pressure on the trigger to hold the gun in the crook of your hand and pull backward....no grip needed. It's the best trigger control drill I know. Yeah, I agree for kids or newbies it's certainly better to train a proper grip. I guess I was just trying to say you can still shoot an accurate shot without a proper grip, but why learn the wrong way if you can help it. What's funny is I was taught the "tea cup" grip in the Navy and shot very well that way for many years. However a couple years ago when I took my CCW class the instructor made fun of my "tea cup" grip and suggested I try the thumbs forward grip. I started practicing with it and it made a huge difference as far as control on follow up shots. I was no more or less accurate on my initial shot, but the follow up shots are much easier and more accurate. It's also a lot more stable with my XDs which likes a strong grip. |

Maybe in this one case I'll go out on a limb and say it was good that none of the teachers had a CCW. You might be shooting blanks, but I'm not... On a somewhat related note, I have seen several pranks on youtube where people are pretending to be murdering somebody or assaulting somebody to film the reaction of people walking by. They need to be really careful because a lawful citizen who walks up on a murder in progress has every legal right to use deadly force. Even if it's a prank. Here's an example: Elevator Murder Experiment

Subject: RE: 'The' Gun Thread powerman - 2013-04-30 6:07 PM The ATF, needs a director. I do not know who that should be. Laws either need to be enforced, or removed from the books. If we do not have the resources to enforce them, then either get them, or get rid of the law. If we do not enforce the current laws, but want them in place for special cases, then I can't see how enacting more laws, are going to do anything. If the laws are not going to solve the problem they are enacted for, then they are bad laws and should not be enacted. It's not complicated. It would be nice if they actually followed guidelines for punishments for violating gun laws as well: Man who sold ATF agents their own stolen gun gets 18 months http://www.jsonline.com/watchdog/watchdogreports/man-who-sold-atf-a... Stadtmueller reopened the court after about 15 minutes and handled the down the sentence, which was less than the federal sentencing guidelines of 24 to 30 months Guy's probably going to be out somewhere near a year. |

Who are you planning to go to war with? Toted a Barrett 50 for a while. That weapon was so damned heavy. Much prefer the M40A series. |

Well, since I get the "why does anyone need..." about my AR's or my mags over 10rds, I figure I would just go with a single shot rifle to be less offensive. My buddy has the M95 and it is about 7-8lbs lighter than the semi-auto version of the Barrett used by the military. Once I get my Serbu we will have an accuracy showdown just for fun. I'm with you that I would rather carry an R700 / M40A3. The M40A5's were after my day but deer fear my Savage 300 Win Mag with Rifle Basix trigger. They will hate it even more once my suppressor arrives... they won't hear it but they will hate it. |

Jim's Pawn Shop in Fayetteville, NC, has an indoor range in it. Well, in all honesty the "pawn" part of it is about 1/5th of the store and the rest is gun shop, shooting range, archery range, etc. They always claimed the left side is up to .50 BMG and right side is up to something like .460 Weatherby. My buddy was visiting and I borrowed his rifle and brought it to Jim's. They always run a magnet over your ammo to make sure it's not steel core and when they asked what I was shooting I told them "One round" and brought out the single .50 BMG. They made me wait until the left side was done and no one in there. Ear plugs, ear muffs. OH MY GOD. Brass that has been caught up in the sound proofing above the lane comes raining down on my head. Apparently all the other lanes too. They said the glass outside the left side actually moved. Suffice to say, shoot the thing outside when you get it. I think my ears are still ringing and that was 15 years ago. |
