Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by Jeakins Shirt vote Versions 5 then 6. Workouts have been good but not great. Had 2 runs & 2 swims last week. I really should have got on the trainer in the evening but just couldn’t get motivated. However, one run was great for me with a 5 km and made a PB with bit over 37 min to run at 7m 22s/km. I have been running by heart rate and I am finally starting to see some improvements in speed! For anyone starting this process it is slow, very slow. Started last summer running this way and it was almost 6 months before I could run for 20 min straight (I was run walk before that). I am now up to running close to 40 min straight and keeping in my zone. My advice for anyone starting a heart rate zone training program is to have patience. Also I am only doing this for running. Swim and bike I am using a combination of long & slow and intervals. My primary reason for HR Zone training on the run was to avoid injury (dreaded Plantar Fasciitis). So far so good! My feet are feeling good and for the first time in my life I am able to run 5 km at least weekly (been doing that since beginning of Jan) I try to get in one 3 km and one 5 km each week. Running is my weakest of the tri sports. On to another week with a 3 km run before work this morning @ 7m 09s/km. Getting closer to breaking the 7 m/km mark! Hey Jeff - I'm glad to hear your feet are feeling fine. Having struggled/battled PF since college - I would just like to suggest that you continue to do your PT exercises and stretches religiously. It won't be long before you will be ramping up your volume once the weather improves and now is the time to do the work so you can continue to run without pain. Congrats on 6 weeks of 5K - all of that effort is gonna make running a lot easier! |

Does this apply for beer as well? What is you train for 1h and then drink a glass of red wine?? If that was true - then you'd be the fittest man on the planet! It sounds like some medical tests are in order! |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Hi Everyone! Today was a lot of fun. I finally pulled the trigger and bought a brand new car - I was hoping to get a used car but there weren't a lot of models to choose from that had all the features I was looking forward. Hating the car I had been driving since 2008, my wife and I decided to spend an extra grand and buy a smaller brand new car that had all the features we wanted. So we got a Honda Fit - and I LOVE IT!!! It took 6 hours of haggling but we got the dealership to give us a good deal. And thanks to the kick in the butt from a bunch of BDASers - I made it to the gym tonight and am hoping to make it back tomorrow for a swim and a little aqua jogging. Did you all see the SNL special? Hysterical! |

1941 , Vermont | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Woohoo on the new car, Dave!! Good for you! I have to get on my computer to vote for shirts. 2/? So far today. First time in 6 weeks I tried a walk/run for two miles. Very interesting using my hrm and even at a painfully slow pace I jacked up into high zone 3. Zoinks?! Knee still isn't right, but we'll figure it out. I did my PT today too trying to keep the knee quiet. I swam right after for an easy brick going 1500 yards. On the fruit/veg front - a strong start! 10!! 6 veggies and 4 fruits! 2 smoothies with banana, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, kale, spinach, peas, and carrots. Drunken Irish stew for dinner had potatoes, more carrots, celery and I even got my red wine in it and a Guinness! Oh yum. 2 bowls of that put me right. Oh! Onions were in there too!! Make that 11! |

Extreme Veteran 1648 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Had a weekend of trouble trying to swim. Made it to the pool twice but someone must have fed all the local kids beans or something since it kept closing for 24 hours... I did get an indoor bike in and some shoveling of the driveway today. We missed a powder day due to garage door malfunction that the neighbors called us about to come check out why it was open when we actually drove back to double check before leaving. For shirts I vote for 2. (Definitely not 4 please- I really don't think I could explain that to my husband). Today I had Apple, kiwi, avocado and Brussel sprouts. |

Expert 1051 Bradenton, Florida | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Good evening everyone, and Happy Presidents' Day! Shirt vote #5 then #4. Last week ended on a sour note. I don't know how it happened, but I managed to get sick over the internet. After reading about all of you guys getting sick, I came down with a nasty upper respiratory/chest cold, so thanks guys. Ended up skipping my long run because of the cough. Then Sunday was consumed finishing an assignment for my grad class, so I bailed on my long ride. Total CLP on that one. However, today started a new week and I took advantage of the day off and the nice weather and headed north to St. Petersburg to explore the Pinellas Trail, a rails to trails project. After a little confusion at the start, I managed to get 41 miles in with only about 4 of those on the roads. I may have found my new favorite route. DQ - Thanks for keeping things rolling. Weekly challenges, monthly challenge, shirt design, Spotify playlist, MyFitnessPal group... thanks again! Moonrocket - A vegetable challenge, really? Are you my wife? Kevin - Congrats on getting your foot in the door. Since Jimmy Buffett didn't make the playlist, I thought I'd leave you with a little tidbit from the master of Margaritaville, along with some pics from today's ride. The weather is here I wish you were beautiful The skies are too clear life's so easy today The beer is too cold, the daiquiri's too fruitiful No place like home when you're this far away Chris (Skyway sunset.jpg) (Skyway.jpg) (St. Pete skyline.jpg) Attachments ---------------- Skyway sunset.jpg (106KB - 4 downloads) Skyway.jpg (79KB - 4 downloads) St. Pete skyline.jpg (117KB - 1 downloads) |

Chris, your pics really make me want to go running. Shirt vote: I go 6 first then 5 Generic comment/question: Anyone else taking vitamin D during the winter? My doc told me to do it a while back....I'm finally listening to her. Thanks to the forum for keeping me honest. If not for you guys I wouldn't have been guilted into going for the workout tonight. I really didn't feel it, but I didn't want to post with my tail between my legs. You know how it works though, now I'm glad I did. |

Veteran 732 Pittsburgh, PA | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Lots of treadmill runs lately. It's just been too cold to run outside, and even when there's not a cold advisory, sidewalks and trails are quite treacherous. I did a 7 mile tempo run on Sunday that went great- I felt so good! Then my 14 mile long run today. Felt great for the first 10, then OK for 2, then it was all downhill from there. Mainly just tired and my feet hurt. Good thing is, my calves/ shin had been bothering me, but felt OK on those 2 runs. Thursday I'm leaving for the Dominican Republic! I'm not really going to worry about training while I'm there... I've only missed a few runs on the marathon schedule so far. I am scheduled for a 15 mile long run next weekend (while I'm gone), but the next weekend I have a half-marathon which is also on the schedule. So my plan is to jog a mile before as warm-up, do the HM at marathon pace, if possible, and if I feel OK, run/walk another 2. |

My doc thinks it's just a fad but it makes sense to me that we don't make enough Vitamin D when, you know, we barely see the sun, and certainly never have exposed skin when we're outside. I got a liquid form (like an eyedropper)- it makes sense to me that our bodies would absorb that better. But I don't know. It's so hard to tell if supplements like that actually make a difference- it's never the difference between feeling terrible and amazing, it's always kind of OK and maybe kinda better? |

Had a dishwasher catastrophe this weekend including 2 dishwashers one that would not close and one where rats had nested in the insulation. short of the long I have installed 2 dishwashers but removed 3 so I have a hole in my kitchen. Due to weather I will get in a treadmill run tomorrow and still not have a dishwasher. |

21 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business I am on there as well. Craftyviking. Speaking of apps. I am currently using Runkeeper for logging but I am not sure if I want to continue with it, I am feeling kinda meh about it and would like to hear if there is something else that would work better. I know Strava and Endomondo (spelling?) are common ones, I have tested them out but not in a while. What do people use and what do you enjoy? I am also on Fitocracy... not that I use it much though... I should be better about actually getting some strength and core work out in... |

20 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business My short vote: #5 then #3 Craftyviking- I've been using Strava for several years now and I love it. It is pretty accurate both in distance and elevation. I also like the challenges and way different segments let you compare your current fitness/effort level with both others in your area and with yourself. My weekend's efforts: Saturday- work from 5:45 pm to 6:00 am with about 9 miles of walking, sleep 4 hours, swim 1200 m and then back to work for another 12.25 hours and another 9 miles, run 3.5, sleep another 5 hours, rugby practice, and back to work for another oh so long night with another 9-ish miles. As I type this it is 3:00 am and only a short 3 hours to go before I go home, do an hour on the trainer, fall into bed for about 4 hours, another rugby practice and pray like hell I don't get called in to work tonight. Oh, and hopefully squeeze in another run in the evening. I have a question about the fruits and veggies challenge: do fruity beers count? If so, I will force myself to consume one or three, just for the health benefits of course. |

New user 58 Calgary, Alberta | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Vitamin D: The only thing it has been proven to do is increase absorption of calcium and therefore promotes bone growth. Vitamin D deficiency has now been linked to breast cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, heart disease, depression, weight gain, and other maladies. These studies show that people with higher levels of vitamin D have a lower risk of disease, although they do not definitively prove that lack of vitamin D causes disease -- or that vitamin D supplements would lower risk. Additionally my Dr. told me to take it too. He believes that with exercise it aids in increasing metabolism. I have never read any downside to taking Vitamin D supplements and proven or not it does have many potential benefits. That being said if you can increase your vitamin d naturally I believe that is the best method. Foods high in vitamin d include cod liver oil (not really a food as far as I am concerned), Oily Fish (trout, salmon, etc.), mushrooms, whole grains, dairy. And yes I am keeping up with stretching and rolling. The other thing that really helped me is my brother in law (he runs ultra-marathons) worked with me to improve my stride when he was visiting last summer. The PT, HR training and stride improvement have change the way I think about running, I actually like it now! |

2126 Baltimore, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Hey everyone! So we got about 4 inches last night...not a big deal, but they cancelled all the gym classes this morning. I did a kettlebell workout last night in my living room, then woke up this morning and did a superset workout. It's a good one, I will type it below in case anyone wants to try it :-) That makes me 2/6 for the week (thank you DQ for the challenge! Otherwise I probably would've slept in this morning, haha). I have an issue with MyFitnessPal after using it for a week. A lot of my workouts right now are strength and conditioning, and it's annoying to have to put in each individual exercise on its own. Also, strength exercises aren't worth any extra calories! That seems unfair. Does anyone have any tricks for this? My workout this morning was doing each set for 2 minutes, switching exercises every 30 seconds (so you do each one twice in that 2 min). I went through the sets twice. The only equipment you need is a mat and either a resistance band, weights or just cans of soup (for biceps and triceps). Set 1: Mountain Climbers Pushups Set 2: Lunges Jump Squats Set 3: Plank Walks Diagonal Knee Tucks Set 4: Bicep curls Triceip extension or tricep dips This workout is good because it gets your heart rate up. I finished it off with some abs. |

Veteran 371 Lincoln, Nebraska | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Jersey Vote: 5 & 6 (I like both equally) I would like to suggest an adjustment to said design though. Move the "Powered by Hops" and the hops images to the pockets. Then make the caricature larger or more centered. Nicole, Nice work on that superset! I really need to get back into doing that sorta stuff. Maybe I'll give yours a shot later today. Now...where did I put that bucket for when I puke... LOL!!! Veggies!!! Wife wanted subway last night. So we shared a 12" Veggie Delight. That's 9 veggies in one sandwich! Plus the avacado for breakfast and banana as a snack. 11/15!! I'll rock a smoothie at some point to finish that off. Does anyone "juice"? I have a juicer, and used to make juice several times a week. I think I'll try and get back into that as well. Here was my standard juice recipe: 2 large carrots 1/2 beet 1 hand full spinach 2 celery stalks (optional, as they are sometime a pain to clean out of the juicer. Stringy.) 1 Apple 1 Orange 1 Lemon Warning: You will poop bright red after having beets. Don't panic. :D |
