As we're getting closer to 100 days mark before the "cannon" goes off it becomes more important (at least for me) to keep the motivation and the focus in tact. With that said, I am sharing the list of most inspiring movies that I've seen and hopefully their stories will come in handy while plowing though the "tough" parts of the IMLP course.

Please feel free to share your ideas. So far on my list I have (not in any particular order):

  • Touching the Void
  • 127 Hours
  • The Endurance
  • Men of Honor
  • Braveheart
  • Seven Pounds
  • Rocky

In all fairness I should post, I've read through the entire thread so I should probably contribute a bit...and I needed a first post anyway.

1. Is this your first IM?   Yup!

2. Have you done LP before?  Only sections while training, then volunteering... obviously no racing there.

3. What are your goals for the 2011 race?  Well, if I'm being honest here a KQ time but I've got no problem just finishing under my own power considering its my first shot here.

4.How/Why did you select the Lake Placid Race?  I live in Buffalo, NY and our tri club has a decent size presence at IMLP every year so that got me excited a few years ago then last summer I decided I was ready to sign up.  Also, the race is close-ish.

5. Do you have any specific questions that you wish addressed about LP (the race, training etc)  Not really right now, the forum has done a good job and I do have a coach so he takes care of the bulk of my questions.  No doubt I'll think of something.

As for everything else that has been discussed on here recently:

-My placid specific (build) training is starting this Monday.  I've been knocking out base miles for... forever it seems.  Especially with notorious Buffalo winters, my bike trainer and I have bonded well.

-My adamo saddle has also bonded well with my bottom   I know there is plenty of discussion about this.  I ride a pretty agressive position and the saddle works for me nicely.  I still have issues from time to time but I've put in enough miles to just build up the tissue damage anyway!

-I'm racing two local Olympic distance races before placid, one in the beginning of June and one as my last real training day in July before taper.  Besides that I've only raced once this year, a half marathon in March.  I set a nice PR of 1:23.11 in Virginia so that was good news during base training.

-I'm not even as excited about riding outside as I am about swimming in open water again.  We still have snow in some hilly and wooded areas around Buffalo so I don't get open water swimming for a while still.  I know its race season when I can finally get in the open water here.

Dream chaser thanks for trying to liven us up!

Oh yes I bought four boxes of girl scout cookies!!! Took everything for me not to eat half the box so finally I took those puppies to work and left them there.  If it is not nailed down, I'll eat it.  Not such a good nutrition plan.

Melindy, great job on your 2nd overall in the recent race... way to go!!!

Good luck in HIM westchester triathlete!

Training? Oh yeah, I keep having to remind myself that I signed up for an Ironman last July. I ran a lot this winter (50+ mile weeks), but just a little swimming and biking.

Problem is, I keep finding these Ultras I want to run. 50 miler last weekend, 100k in a couple weeks, then I HAVE to say "No more" until Lake Placid except a marathon June 5th. This weekend I need to get my act together! Weekend long rides have gotta start NOW!

Too funny -- I had the Ultra Run bug last Falla and half of winter.  But yeah, if you wanna run half your ability at LP you must-must-must get your Long Bikes in.

Hi ALL,

I've been following this tread for some time now and would like to introduce myself:

Why don't we start off with a few questions...

1. Is this your first IM?  - YES
2. Have you done LP before? - NO
3. What are your goals for the 2010 race? - Successfully complete full IM race
4.How/Why did you select the Lake Placid Race? - Closest to my home (NYC)
5. Do you have any specific questions that you wish addressed about LP (the race, training etc) - I was able to get many answer by reading this tread and currently working on my race nutrition plan by trying different options/choices depending on the race day weather conditions.

Dream Chaser - The April fools joke was priceless and I had my wife totally fall for that. I told her that I am deferring the race to 2012 because of the new bike course.

Got a chance to do 3 hours outdoor bike ride last weekend and looking forward to the warm weather ahead for 5+ hours bike rides.

Awesome~!!  I too got a few of my tri buddies at the pool with that Bike Course Change April Fools Joke.  Heee heee.

It is starting to get precariously close to the 3 month mark!

Luckily, my body is hating me less right now compared to the start of my last build...I guess that could all change after the weekend's sessions, but so far, so good. I'm not crazy tired or achy.

The weather is finally starting to cooperate and I should be able to get my trail bike out for a few rides...the roads are still a bit too gritty for my tri bike. I have a 4hr ride tomorrow so I might do half on the trainer and half on my trail bike just to get outside. It will be strength training anyways because my trail bike is a little bit heavier than my tri bike! Haha.

Ok, I've been stalking this thread for a while too - suppose I'll introduce myself :-)

????1. Is this your first IM? Yep. The longest I've gone is a 70.3 last fall.

2. Have you done LP Before. No.

3. What are your goals for the 2011 race?  Survive the bike and finish strong. I do have time goals, but since this is my first IM i'll keep them to myself!

4.How/Why did you select the Lake Placid Race? One of my friends was planning on registering for it last year. We watched several Ironman competetions on tv that weekend before registration... I got so caught up in his excitement and my own that I signed up that Monday morning too. I did eventually want to do one, but I wasn't planning on one for this year!

5. Do you have any specific questions that you wish addressed about LP (the race, training etc). I have SO many, but I've been able to find alot of the answers in this thread! My weakness is the bike, so I'm sure once I'm finally outside riding more I'll have ALOT of training questions geared towards that!

Solid choices above.

I would add:

Rocky 2
Rocky 3
Rocky 4

So for those of you that race with power, what % of FTP do you plan to race at and how long do you expect to be on the bike for?

All those Rocky movies; is that to develop mental toughness, overcoming the demons, like if you can get through that torture you can get through anything?

Making fun of Rocky!?!?

So what if you can't understand what he says half the time.

Rocky 2 is still my favorite movie to spin to as you get the end of Rocky 1 and all of 2.

Funny training stories?

I fell off my trainer this morning.  Had Shaun move the CD.01 onto the Computrainer so I could compare watts on the CT and the Quark. Did the first 30 minutes on the CT, then my bike fell off. Shaun hadn't swapped the skewers and the CD.01 skewer jammed up the CT and I completely tipped over and fell off when I stood up to clim a "hill." Pulled the CD.01 off and finished the bike on the Cycleops. Lovely.

While I was incredibly pissed, in retrospect it was pretty funny.

lol, I can relate to that.  I finally realized I needed to set up my own damn trainer and stop reeeming out my hubs Tongue out

The goal is to race around 70% of FTP.  After all my winter trainer riding that general effort is so engrained into me right now I feel like, even if it's an awful day, riding at that would feel like butta' anyway.  As for time, I'm shooting for the ballpark of 5:30 under optimal conditions.. give or take.  I know bike times can vary greatly in Placid depending how mother nature feels that specific morning so it's more about the % of FTP, and how I'm feelin', for me than the time but that would be the goal if all goes well.

And Rocky is solid.  The most solid when all movies are watched in sucession.

I live in the Philly area. I ride my bike by the Art museum frequently. Seeing people run up those steps and raise their hands over their heads gets old quickly. There's a big statue of Rocky there too and it's rare that there are not people posing with the statue for pictures. I usually yell, "Yo, Adrian!!" when I ride by. I was never a Rocky fan. Ever.

But, I did have a nice 8.5 mile run in the chilly rain today. In Jersey though. Fuggeddaboudit

To be completely honest, I didn't see the post until after you admitted it was a joke, but I would enjoy riding down that thing a few times. I did it once with traffic and can't wait to do it again and not worry about cars. It is closed to motor vehicles, right????
