Ditto. 09 IMKY was awesome! Sounds like it was pretty nice out there this year too. Hoping we get something similar in a couple weeks. |

Veteran 345 Indiana | Subject: RE: Ford Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread Fred Doucette - 2011-08-25 7:08 AM I'm still trying to grasp the hills on the run course. The athlete guide 'run profile' makes them look like epic mount Everest climbs but I suspect they aren't that bad. Any vets or locals have more comments on the hills for the run?? I am not a local - but have been on the course several times this year. My opinion is that the hill on Observitory is significant. I am planning to walk up it. Because it is a two loop course you run it twice. |

Lots of riders doing the course backwards! Perfect weather too. Can I ask what the condition of the roads is like these days? thanks. I'm not racing, but rode the 40 mile loop of the course today as it seems similar to the one I am doing soon (same day as you guys). None of the sections in that area would make me nervous due to road conditions. Some cracks filled in and some rougher sections, but to me it was pretty good for the area. Maybe an occasional gap, but no serious potholes. This course was fun! On a couple sections I'm wondering if they are going to lay down some pavement soon. There were a bunch of metal line markers set out periodically here and the road had a constant buzz to it in these sections. It looked like base layer asphalt too. It's fine to ride on, won't hurt anything on the bike, just not quite as fast as smoother sections. There are a couple of short sections of road that were recently "chip & sealed". I believe they must have done it a couple of weeks ago, as they are pretty packed down at this point - but beware of the loose gravel in the turns and close the edges of the road. Overall - the condition of the roads is fairly good. One exception is the short stretch between Bourbon road and Stagecoach (sorry, not sure what the name is but it was BUSY during training rides) - right outside of Cross Planes. This road is pretty cracked up and has multiple smallish potholes. |

Subject: RE: Ford Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread Does anyone happen to know the precise locations (by mile marker) of the aid stations on the bike? What about on the run? I was hoping this information would be provided in the athlete's guide, but it just generally refers to aid stations every 12-15 miles on the bike, and every mile or so on the run. Thanks for your help. |

90 miles south of Titletown, USA | Subject: RE: Ford Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread Mrs. brown_dog_us - 2011-08-28 8:13 PM Not to beat a dead horse, but I've been dorking out watching IM Wisconsin start videos from youtube while we track buddies at Louisville and Canada. SO, is it possible to start and do the first leg of the swim wide outside of the scrum or are efforts to swim a wider route pinched off by the shore? In the 2010 video, it looks like there are a few boats about 100 meters from the start and then it looks clear, but the camera angle is bad. BTDT folks, what say you? I know I posted earlier in this thread about my swim in 2009 and trying to avoid any contact. But, yes, is the answer to your question. I got in the water about 10 minutes before the start. At that point, I was the furthest outside of anybody in the water. By the time the race started there were 10-15 people to the right of me. That made me pretty anxious as it was pretty essential for me to avoid contact. That said, when the cannon went off I pretty much made a beeline to swim forward and towards the terrace to stay well to the outside of 95% of the field. There will be plenty of room, still, between you and the shore once you swim about 100 yards. I wound up staying well off the buoy line (guessing 40 yards, give or take) for the whole swim and it was EXTREMELY clean. I know I swam a bit further than many, but, for me and the situation I was in, I needed to avoid as much contact as possible. FWIW, I swam just under a 1:15...easy to get into a good rhythm early. |

Member 37 | Subject: RE: Ford Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread ... so I've been beating this horse over and over again, and I am wonder if starting closer to the jump may not be a bad option. Starting really wide right seems to add quite a bit of distance to an already long swim -I think about the extra energy used. Plus, at some point, one has to converge into the pack. Also, I wonder if swimmers to the right might be more likely to panic? I'm not a real strong swimmer ( hopefully out around 1:10-1:15), but usually don't panic in open water. In other races, I have had people around me freeze and stop swimming, or start breast stroking. While I don't want to get mixed up in the scrum, getting kicked by a breast stroker isn't fun either. Idealy, it would be nice to be around confident, but not overly aggressive swimmers. Thoughts? |

Thoughts? Honestly the depth of the start line isn't very deep.... but it is wide. If your not super fast but want to avoid major contact you'd probably not add as much swim distance if you start closer to buoys but hang back just a tiny bit. if you're fast this probably doesn't apply because you'd just catch up to the chaos. As for me... I don't want to add distance to the swim if I don't have to. I started midway between the ski jump and the buoy line about 3/4 the way back. In front of the way too nervous people but behind the Malay. |

Member 51 Cincinnati, OH | Subject: RE: Ford Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread Ok, so I've been mapping out the bike course today for my family (yes, I absolutely should be working instead of doing this, but I have no real motivation to do actual work this week). My plan is to have them go from Monona Terrace after the swim to the hill in Mt Horeb on Rt 92, just after the US-18 overpass. Here is the dilemma: after Mt Horeb, they'd like to head to the real hills on Old Sauk Pass and Timber Ln. I think I can get them there directionally, but it appears they'll be "stuck" inside the loop after they see me on the hills. How hard is it for vehicle traffic to cross the course around that area? I'm assuming the police are letting some traffic cross in between bikes. Anyone have experience with this? |

Thoughts? assuming that the length of the "long" legs of the swim are around 800 yards, there is a minimal impact of starting 100 yards to the right of the bouy line. We're talking about less that 20 yards additional swimming. There is likely more impact swimming wide (distance wise) at the first two turn buoys... If you are looking to go sub 1:00, start upfront with the swimmers!!! If you take a nice slow angle to the first turn, you won't feel much additional distance. |

It is very easy to get back downtown from Timber Lane/Old Sauk Pass without being part of the course. The key is to have them park on Old Sauk Road (which T bones with Timber Lane). Lots of people park there. You can then head back down Old Sauk. If you want directions let me know. Trying to drive on the bike course is a pain for the driver and the race participants, especially around the most crowded areas, Verona, Midtown and Cross Plains. |
