Make Nigey Pie go with you, tell him I said he has to. - somewhere, find a downhill. The Eastlink tunnels will get you going screamingly fast and there's no real way to slow down; better to have that experience beforehand. Also, it's a fairly extreme experience of going fast because the walls and ceiling are right there and you don't see your way out. Very roller-coaster-like, but no safety belt! - doing the majority of riding indoors means that all the little trunk stabilizer muscles that keep you upright and balanced on a moving bike (which never quite goes in a straight line; you're always making tiny adjustments with the handlebars) don't get the necessary development for a road ride. - go somewhat harder on the trainer than you feel like you can/should. I'd say do this all the time. This will help make up for some of the discrepancy in core strength needed to ride on the road. You're right, Eastlink isn't hilly, but as you know it isn't flat, either. Well, it isn't pancake flat - don't worry about the aerobars (like everyone else said). I'd do a good bit of the trainer work in the drops, though. You're going to want a nice low profile on the bike. MOST IMPORTANTLY WE ARE HAVING AN IRONPARTY WITH PIGLETS ON MARCH 10 IN MELBOURNE. Your attendance is mandatoree in order to retain your Manatee-hood. |

Each lane does their own, and I'm usually in a lane alone so I just get it done. When Coach Jason is there I feel like I'm dragging everyone down because he waits for slow-slow me to get to the wall to explain the next exercise and send everyone off. I know in my agency he'd be in trouble and better not play that game again. It's happened 3-4 times now but by different cars on different roads. I do run against traffic. I do have a track that I run for my speed work but I would go crazy running all of my runs there. The police won't do much good. About a month ago one of the officers almost ran the biking group I was in off the road. He had pleanty of room to go around but obviously was irritated at us riding on the side of the road and pulled up within inches to us. We don't have bike paths or running paths, It's not a very friendly bike or run town at all. Jonathan TX, we should probably fill you in that there are many Manatees involved in law enforcement in one way or another. I wasn't speaking negative about our law enforcement at all (I used to be one), I was trying to say that they have a bad taste already about cyclist so speaking to them might not help very much. I did talk to the chief after the bike incident. Oh, I didn't mean to imply that you were. I just thought that you might want to know the type of advice that you could expect to receive ;-) |

He was wearing a Boulder 70.3 swim cap and, um, yeah, um ... square leg swim shorts. *sigh* Talked to DH (dear-darling-delectable-devoted... husband) and DS1 (dear... son #1) about the gym. DH said he's supportive of me doing it but he probably wouldn't use it much (I agree it's not convenient for him). DS1 was interested, but then I think about the $400 bike we bought him that just sits ... *sigh* Oh, and Coach Andie said I should do the local Splash N Dash events. There is one January 13, February 3 and March 3. |

Hmmm, haven't had a car come close to my sun room in ever so long. Even a cheap tread mill, like the one I have, is worth it's weight in "goal". *Bad pun, I apologize" Say you can't run on a tread mill? Then I say you aren't serious about running. Most people fail when they start to arbitrarily limit themselves. "I have to do it one particular way or I can't or won't do it" is the road to failure. /soap box Not that I can't run on a treadmill I just don't. I live in Melbourne, I've been kept inside once due to bad weather which was a severe hailstorm. Also I obviously run badly on the treadmill, seems to hurt my calf muscles and my shins.....
I apologize if I seem to be a bit brusque. I am a former Reconnaissance Marine. We were taught not to give up and not to fail. To achieve this we had to unlearn the restrictions that we put on ourselves. Improvise, adapt, overcome; and all that. You have the potential with in you to do just about anything. Everyone does. Anyone can learn this. It's a choice, and nothing else. I love all of this (especially the bold parts) and absolutely approve. Edited by Asalzwed 2013-01-09 11:18 AM |

![]() | ![]() Went to the first bike repair class. It was fantastic. For the first class he just had us tear down multiple bikes all the way to just the frame. (I tore down 3) The point was to get us used to using the correct tool for the correct part. Next week we will start of specific components. What is especially cool about this place is that it's a non profit geared towards giving underprivileged youth bikes. The deal is, they have to come in and take the class (essentially learning how to take care of their bike themselves since more than likely they won't be able to afford to have someone else do it) and once they complete the class, they get a bike, a helmet and a lock. Also they have access to the facility to come in and work on the bike. It's so cool! |

Hey, speaking of running/injuries, did anyone see the thread about that? And about the recommendation that running everyday will lessen injuries? This is the thread and this is the post about running everyday. Hockey: Training Camp starts Sunday, I would think it will be about a week. Wouldn't surprise me to see the season start on the 19th. I definitely think running frequency lessens injuries when done with self-awareness and caution. |

Remember when I started with masters and we thought coach would "warm up" and start working with me as time went on? Not so much. He has not offered me any help/insight to improve. I'm still at the same speed, if not worse. I actually dread Wednesdays more because he's there. On Monday and Friday I can just get in, do the scheduled workout and be done. Each lane does their own, and I'm usually in a lane alone so I just get it done. When Coach Jason is there I feel like I'm dragging everyone down because he waits for slow-slow me to get to the wall to explain the next exercise and send everyone off. (I'm not the only slow one, there are one or two in the next lane, but I still feel bad for it). There's your answer. Get the gym membership. TJ, I'm with everyone else. Gym. GYM!!! Besides, Chad and I can knock :20/100 off your swimming with just online help. Flat. Jonathan proved it, AMIRITE! If only that were true... Masters was pretty good today. We were doing some descending 50's and I worked hard to balance the increase in speed and still maintain my form. I did a :54 with paddles and a 1:05 w/o paddles. Not much improvement still but good to know I can do it. We had a new IRONPIGLET at masters today!!!! Are you doubting the super duper manatee swimming powers that Yanti & I posess? Upload a video - we will help you - FOR FREE! With all due respect, of course |

Downhills yes had those in cairns but with hairpin bends I just hung onto those brakes!!! Yes to the party yes yes yesHI JO BAXAS THIS POST IS FOR YOU IT INVOLVES IRONPIGLETS That oughtta get your attention, I hope Force yourself to get out for a few long rides before IM. |

I think WAY too many people get caught up in pace and miles, especially when they first start out. I think simply getting out, niiiiice and slow more to just get in the habit of putting your shoes on, braving the weather and getting out there. I think it's important to do a large amount of this to allow your body to adapt but also to get to know yourself. Get to know the aches that you can run through vs. the ones that require a day off or how to properly fuel. All of these little things are part of the bigger picture. *And I can most certainly expand on anything you would like to. Edited by Asalzwed 2013-01-09 1:26 PM |
