Race report, SIL visit, baby pic, and stand-up desks are all a blur. Here's the little face that has most of my attention ENT visit tomorrow. Pooooor wee bubba. I hope it gets figured out quickly--he is a cutie pie! x whatever by now, love prayers and healing strength sent! His face looks pretty bad ... and certainly very sad, poor thing. |

Science Nerd 28760 Redwood City, California | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! jbwills - 2013-01-30 12:38 AM I am looking for some Manatee advice for something besides tri's. I have been wanting to start my Master's degree for about the past 2 years. Situations with the ex-wife have regularly put a damper on that. Things have settled down and it looks like I can start my Masters in March. It will take me about 3-4 semesters to finish it, about 1.5-2 years. It would impact my races in that I would have to put off doing a HIM this year and probably aim for a late HIM next season. I can do it while I am still in the Army for free, I have 2.5 years left. I would be looking at doing just Oly's and sprint instead. I know I will not be as competitive as I would like as I would probably lose 2 workouts during the week. What does the Manatees say? Having recently completed grad school (after 7 years!!), I guess my first question is always why do you want to go to grad school? Is this something that you need for your job or will help in a significant way? Grad school sucks, but if it is something that will help you in the long run, go for it. That's going to be more important than working out now. If it advances your career, you may be able to earn more money/get more vacation, etc, which can all help training in the long run. |

Science Nerd 28760 Redwood City, California | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! TriAya - 2013-01-30 12:46 PM Lots of good stuff to respond to ... I have a brief whine, like poor Jo's rather unwanted too-long-term houseguest! My good friend Jim, who admittedly is like family, and who lived with me for two months last year, came back to visit for 10 days. He is coughing up a storm (straight through the night so far) and sneezing. I'm four weeks out from IM New Zealand and this will be my SIXTH attempt in which I've gotten through most of the training toward an iron race. I'm officially representing Indonesia and I have sponsors (as in several, whom I should really be adding to my sig line). This will also be the first race (perhaps ever) where I've had no significant illness or injury in the run-up. (I know it's never too late to get food poisoning the week before, like with IMWA, but still). I might have to kick him out tomorrow and I feel really badly about it, but I'm avoiding physical contact with my own sister right now because she's ill, have done without the Hobbit Maid for the better part of three weeks because she knows I go ballistic if she comes around with so much as a sniffle. Other people get colds. I get pneumonia. I may be a cruel cold heartless batch, but I suppose it's up to him if he wants to continue the friendship even if I boot him out. If I don't, and I get sick, I'm going to hate him, and I really don't want to hate anybody I actually love. Yanti, you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself and NOT get sick. He should understand that!! Any really good friend won't stop being your friend because of this. |

Nah, he won't either--he might be mad for a day or two (or not, I could be totally misjudging him) but I'm actually the least psycho of our group of friends from LA. The other three won't ever let him stay with them at all because they're incredibly OCD (I mean clinically, not in the ha ha ha I have ADHD a squirrel sense). The only time they've ever let me into their homes or disrupted their extremely carefully planned and executed habits for me is when I went nuts in the fall of '08 and needed round-the-clock watching for a while. Okay, that made me laugh. I have no idea how our entire little group got along so well and were best buddies considering how fly-by-the-seat-of-pants and circus I am, and how they are pathologically not. Maybe it's the crazy factor that unites us. We are each of different original nationalities and ethnicities as well. It's not going to be the end of the world one way or another. It's actually my sister who really insisted I not come over and only send stuff by courier. And yes, Jim really is family and he will understand.

Jo - Hope things are tollerable (so far) with the SIL Erin - Prayers for the bebe AKJonathon - DO SCHOOL NOW while it's free!!! Darren - I have NO business giving swimming advice but you are asking the right group YOURYANTINESS - If your friend is a true friend he will absolutely understand! Do what is right for you! You are finally on the right track for an IM finish. Don't take unnecessary chances. As for me, I feel like I had a very productive swim session this morning. I focused primarily on keeping my wrist straight, per Skrat's observation, then secondarily on high elbow and rotation. I could definitely feel that it was working my arms differently. I forgot my watch so I don't know how my lap times were affected, that may be a good thing for now, but I did notice that my stroke per length count went down. I stopped after 2300 yards because I could tell I was tired and my form was breaking down, which ususally isn't an issue at that point, so I think I'm getting somewhere! Yay! Thanks SKRAT AND YANTI!!!!!! |

Elite 4435 | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! bcraht - 2013-01-31 3:58 AM Richardsdrr - 2013-01-30 3:09 AM Hi, I had an interesting session during pool class last night, and need some advice from the fish in the group. I haven't really being doing much drills during my swimming time. I have mostly been trying to link my laps together so that I can swim without stopping to catch my breath every two lengths. Last Friday, I managed to swim 1km without stopping, and didn't feel out of breath at the end, felt I'd turned a corner. This week, I decided I would use my swim class time to get the instructor to pick up one bad part of my stroke, and give me exercises to correct it. She watched me swim a lap and said that she can not really see any major problems (the instructor is not a Swim Coach, more a swim instructor, more geared to getting people to be able to swim than to get them to swim properly). She then suggested that we just start general drills, and that we use a pull buoy to concentrate on arm drills. This is the first time I've used the PB, and it didn't go down to well. My legs kept sinking with it, no matter where I put it. By the time I had got half way down the pool, 12-13 m, they were near 40 Degrees. I told the instructor, who couldn't work out why it was happening. I finally sussed out that I was arching my back, pushing my hips forward, causing my legs to sink. I then swam without a PB and noticed I do the same thing, but it's not as noticeable because my kicks are keeping my legs up. I think this maybe from swimming for years doing breast stroke only, and I have to learn how not to do it. The instructor was at a loss on giving me drills to do that would get me to swim with my bum up (sort of position), or a more flat body in the water, if you know what I mean. Just wondered if any of you fish have any advice/drills I could carry out. I can not put video up, not allowed to in the pool, so you'll just have to work out what I mean from my description in advance, Cheers in advance, Darren. I was given a drill to do a few months back that really helped me with this. Swim a few lengths and vary your head position in the water. Look straight ahead, look straight down, look partway between and pay attention to what this does to your butt/legs. This really helped me figure out where MY balance point was. Yep I agree. Put your head down and your butt will pop up! Most of the guys at squad use two pull buoys when we do those drills or their feet hit the floor. |

At the end of the run my right knee began to hurt so much that I had to stop running and walk home. I saw my Chiro/Sports Med Doctor. He said it was my IT band and he stemmed, massaged, stretched me. Told me to take it easy this weekend which I kinda did (didn't do my long run Sunday). Anyways went for my run this morning and 20 minutes in my IT band began to tighten up and 30 minutes in I was in pain. Still hurt even when walking. Went back to my Doc and he said it was much worse. He repeated the above therapy and said I need to stay off my legs for 7 days. No running, no cycling, no walking, no lower body strength exercises. Just ice and stretch and foam roller. He did say that I can swim since it isn't load bearing. Well I am clearly frustrated because I am 2 months away from my first half ironman and I was really doing a great job building my fitness for it. I don't feel like I can take 7 days off even though I know it probably will do me good anyway. I'm sure someone in here has experienced this so advice, thoughts, comments? I know rest is best thing but it's the hardest thing to do |

Take 5 days see how you go. What I would say is you are probably going to have to build back into it slowly. It sucks! Someone on facebook was saying he had the same issue - and a suggestion was made to seek out a gravity free treadmill - google and see if you can find a gym that has one of those... |

Master 1890 Gig Harbor | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! rrrunner - 2013-01-30 10:18 AM Quick break from work to catch up with my pod... This almost brought a tear to my eye. As for the arms - you will probably feel it most in your triceps. They may be pretty sore tomorrow....let us know. Good job, and keep up the good work. |

Yep - kick him out. You should have seen me last year the last month before my IM....washing my hands all the time, would pull my shirt over my nose and mouth any time anyone with a sniffel came within 20 feet of me....I was paranoid. |

Master 9705 Raleigh, NC area | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! JJ- - 2013-01-30 6:08 PM IT BAND INJURY Aaagggghhhhhh........ So frustrated as I type this. Last week I ran on some pretty sore legs. I know rest is best thing but it's the hardest thing to do I'm so sorry to hear that you are going through this injury and I totally understand your frustration. I'm glad that you are seeing a sports med guy. I'm confident that he will get you all fixed up soon. You've already built to a long run of 10 miles and honestly, that is pretty darn good. I'm not sure that did a long run much more than that before my first HIM. This is only a minor set back. Try not to let it get you down. Things to think about:
