Expert 1255 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed Jim, that race sounds fun and hard! Good job. Guess that guy gets the Darwin award. Randy, great job on giving up tobacco. I was with Ernesto for two seasons before I realized he used to smoke several packs a day and drink like a fish, his words, not mine. People always assume that athletes have always been that. Trevor, this may help on crank arm length. I've only done up through HIM. I go sockless on the bike with no issues and probably would for an IM. I wear socks on the run and probably would for an IM. My favorite socks are the Injinji toe socks. I hardly ever get hot spots or blisters. When I do, it's usually the shoes, not the socks. Jackie

Thanks for the link. So basically since I am 5'4" I am one of those on the boundaries but then again it really comes down to preference. My road bike has 170mm cranks and I felt pretty comfortable spinning on that this last year until I got my tri bike which has the 175mm cranks. I can tell a difference on that bike and I do notice that my right leg does that figure 8 thing as I can't keep it tucked in. I do have a dead spot at the top and it is noticeable when I am doing isolated leg training and I am getting tired. So while I still am not totally sure on the crank length I am going to sway towards a 170mm as that is what I rode this last year and it felt pretty good. Now that is unless someone else hear thinks I should go even shorter. |

Master 1609 Gold Coast Australia. | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed Jackie, sorry to hear about your run. I just had a look at your logs out of curiosity. You are running close to 100k/wk... not my position to question it or anything, but this would make a lot of runners just simply tired. And it's not like you have a long history of marathon running. Hopefully it all pays off on the big day. |

Expert 1255 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed Mitch, that article was exactly what I needed. Mark, I agree it's a pretty aggressive plan. I haven't had much issue with it, so I'm thinking that it was just a bad run like the article says. I love you guys and the way you are so supportive. Thanks. Now to get in the car and drive back to Austin from Houston. Jackie

I could not deny him. so 1:22 on the bike. Went for a really hot run at lunch. 0:40 mins. Had a lot of trouble keeping my heart rate down. Much more walking than normal. Trying to keep HR at MAF. At one stage walking up a hill was maintaining my MAF level. Very interesting to see the impact of heat and humidity on the HR.

Both high heat and cold will mess with your heart rate. For me perfect running temp is about 55f or 13c is optimal. |

Master 1780 Boynton Beach, FL | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed Updating for the weekend Lots to report. Had my first 10 mile run on Saturday. HM pace +45 secs (11:00 pace). Felt good to the point of running the last mile at HM pace (10:15) just to see how my body reacted to running at that speed with tired legs. Again, felt good so happy about my progress. Today I joined LA Fitness. They are 5 min from my office, which will allow me to do a bunch of lunch swims. Not only it's nice swimming in an actual lap pool (up to now I was swimming in an irregular shape pool), but it will free 2 mornings a week: 1 extra run, and some extra sleep. Todat was my first 30 min swim and I can get used to this. Mitch Swim 2 - Bike 13 - Run 18 - Rest 4 - Total 33 Time 26:38:13 Edited by Samyg 2013-01-22 12:46 PM |

Master 2238 Dallas | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed roadrhino - 2013-01-21 9:01 AM Question regarding footwear/socks for racing an Ironman... I have always trained and raced sockless for everything, including 70.3. Transitioning to the longer bike and full marathon, what are the suggestions for socks on the bike and any shoe/sock recommendations for the run? Currently I run in Zoot Ultra TT 4.0. Nikki runs in KSwiss Blade Light. In Ironman 40 extra seconds don't matter. Put socks on! Any blister or discomfort is multiplied by ten as the miles increase, you want to be as comfy as possible. |

Master 2238 Dallas | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed spie34 - 2013-01-21 4:53 PM Trevor, being 5'4" you may want to try 165mm and see what it feels like. Most top level triathletes (even tall ones) are switching to shorter cranks (only for their tri bikes) because the shorter turn radius allows for a more aggresive aero position and less pain before the run.jackiep - 2013-01-21 2:37 PM Jim, that race sounds fun and hard! But hard to know what length I should really go with and I have been kind of wanting to get the crank before my bike fit. Maybe backwards way of doing it but heck I don't know as I'm still pretty new at this stuff. |
