Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Heading to SoCal this morning for a week. I would like to find a bike to rent as moving my 3 hour ride to yesterday didn't turn out so well. Still got in 2.5, but the power was down and no time for the brick. We'll see how that turns out, if not I will still run and swim plus maybe take in a spin class. Ok, so is anyone racing this weekend? Bill, isn't your trail race this weekend? Anyone else? |

Really happy with my week. Was able to get in all my workouts this week (other than the run/walk switch on Mon), despite traveling & my husband going out of town for 2 days after I got back. My run on Tues am & bike were tough with the heat & all the walking around the park, but I got them done. I did my LR Fri am so I wouldn't have to do my LR & LB back to back this weekend. I'm off for a long swim today then have a 6 hr bike/20min run tomorrow. I cool front came in, & the highs are in the mid 70s this weekend, a nice break! Jamie, glad you had fun. I love that area! Bill--have a GREAT race tomorrow!! Have a great weekend everyone! |

Veteran 268 Northern CT | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed You know you're exhausted when you fall asleep stretching!! This happened after my 6hr ride today. I've been exhausted all week, but getting through all the workouts. This morning was a mental & physical challenge....I'm just so ready to be done with the training...this was my 3rd 6+ hr ride and I just wanted it to be over. My legs felt flat and I just spent a good portion of the ride in my small chainring -- did I mention I mapped out a ride with 4600 ft of climbing...bad idea!! I ended up cutting 10 miles of an out & back portion around mile 60 as I just needed to be heading toward home! - my slowest ride all year but it's done and in the books! So then I'm stretching on the floor and the next thing I know my son is telling me to stop it ...apparently I was also snoring! He thought I was kidding around. OK...one more 3hr run and all the hay is in the barn and it's taper time! |

My Oly this morning was fantastic and (if I may say so myself) I was awesome. Second place in my age group! I will get a race report together when we get home on Monday. I am having a great time and enjoying relaxing and not being at work. We are getting ready to head off to our last night of sprint car racing. Hope everyone else is having a good weekend. Karen |

OK...one more 3hr run and all the hay is in the barn and it's taper time! Sounds like it was a well-deserved, impromptu nap! I know what you're saying about the long rides, week after week. I am now 4 weeks out from my IM and I have one more weekend of a 6 hour ride/1 hour brick, then 3 hour run the next day. I don't mind doing any of those things, but these 5-6 hours rides every weekend are getting a bit taxing. But we're almost there, right? I wish you the best of luck! I had a decent week of training, though I skipped my gym workouts and did not get in my 75 minute recovery ride today (torrential downpour and I just couldn't bear getting on the roller trainer). Yesterday I did 105 miles on the bike, and it was one of those horrible rides where everything hurt--saddle issues, legs were fatigued, neck and shoulders were uncomfortable and hurting for more than half the ride. I was so proud of myself for continuing--I did the first 41 as part of a tri group ride, and though we were not drafting, it is still nice to have company around. The end of the 41 miles where I split off to keep going by myself was only 4 miles from home, and for the next few miles I kept considering turning around and calling it quits. But then I stopped at a convenience store to refill my water, got back on the bike and kept going. I was SOOO glad to be off that bike when I got home, then hit the road for a hot and humid run. As soon as I got done I turned on the hose and just stood under the water (we don't have a pool). It felt so good to get my body temperature down! Today I had a pretty good 18 mile run--felt so much better than my 16 miler last weekend which was painful. I think it was my shoes, so I got new ones this week (Saucony Kinvara 4s--awesome!). They made a big difference. Also got a massage today which was long overdue. I hope everyone had a great weekend of training and racing! |

Master 1539 Sin City | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Hope everyone is doing well! After getting the "excitement" and settling down...I have decided not to do a HIM this year. A couple reasons, and the main reason is: Even though 16 weeks seems to be plenty of time, BUT...I realized that even doing 3-4 runs a week especially starting from the "beginning". Not that I never ran before, just not consistant, and that much is really kind of asking for injury IMO. A few of my triathlete friends started to run very frequent and a lot in a short amount of time, and they got injured. So Honestly, I really feel that I'll feel better if I had better run base prior to training for a HIM. The swim, I could do it, I have no problems since I am very comfortable in the water. SO - I will still do the other triathlons/relays as planned and perhaps do more running in the winter, and then have better base. I still would like to do this HIM because it's close to home and it would only cost me about $40 (Tri club deeeeeeep discount, as long as I volunteer for several hours the next day...totally doable. LOL!). Perhaps next year! Meanwhile, my Tandem partner and I are seriously considering of doing a 103 mile ride, Park to Park Pedal ride in Caliente. Beautiful area, and very small town feel! That'll be fun to train for. It's way different than pedaling with your own power...I feel like it's more work actually! On a TOTALLY non-triathlon/cycling front - I'm SUPER excited for getting my washer and dryer. Our washing machine started to vomit water on the floor. After 5 years of "fighting" with my husband in getting a new washer and dryer...he says without any thoughts, "Okay, just turn off the water, unplug it and we'll go to Sears and get you a new washer and dryer." Man! I could have faked it the whole time and just "spilled" water on the floor and blame it on the washer years ago! The W/D came with the house..."it "works", so why get a new one?" the man says...yet it's kind of grimy, yucky, small and old. Found out that it was manufactured in 1977. Jeez. I totally expected to get a nice simple one, nothing too fancy. And HE did the research and says, "This w/d has very good reviews and good quality". What did he pick? A FANCY set! It has Sportswear setting. Whoooooo! It has ALL kinds of buttons, settings, and stuff...even the dryer has steamer setting (yay, now I can keep my new Sidi bike shoes clean!), etc. My problem is....HOW DO I USE IT?! LOL. I'm used to just chucking loads in and set it to wash and that's it. Looks like I'll need some Mom advice for this one. Las Vegas has been experiencing some really really weird weather lately. I had a flash flood in my street for the first time in 5 years, we've had a 3-day rainfall (highly unusual), and super windy days (30+mph winds). While it has cooled down some, cyclists are NOT used to the higher humidity. Anyhoo....long post....hope everyone is doing well and rocking their races and training! |

I'm in line for volunteer registration now, wondering what the heck I was thinking. I came very close to driving home at 4:00 this AM, but got sucked in once again... Veteran 253 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed I'm glad you had good races Karen & Bill! Bill, I love that excitement of standing in line to sign up, such nervous energy! Maggie-you're almost there, can you believe it? Becky--your post is very timely! I know how you feel. So I did my 1st 100mile ride yesterday, followed by a 20min run. The weather couldn't have been better, 48 to start warming up to 75, a little wind, but not bad. It was a good ride for the most part, but man, that's just a LONG time to be on a bike. There were times when my back hurt, or my neck hurt, or my butt, or my feet. Not all the time or all at once. It seems like the longer I go, the longer it takes for things to pop up. Last week my foot hurt at mile 77, this week it was 95. So my question for you all is, when you are riding long rides are you comfortable the entire time or are there points where parts if your body just aren't happy? This may seem like a silly question, but I've never done this sort of bike volume before! Had 4,000m this am, man this was tough. It wasn't the distance, but after a long day yesterday & even thought I went to bed at 9:25pm, I wanted to go back to bed the entire time I was swimming! |

Ali - Every ride is different....my first 100 my shoulders were really bothering me, next ride everything felt pretty good, this time around- my butt was killing me - any bad patches of road and I was cursing up a storm how much my sit bones were aching. 16 mile run yesterday went really well - then a day with cub scouts rafting for 3 hours -- talk about a sore butt and shoulders!! Member 326 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed I have been lurking since my last post. I did a 100 mile ride this Saturday. Practicing IMWI pace and nutrition/hydration. 5:31, which is right at my goal pace (30km/hr). I am hoping for a sub 6:30 on the bike. Sunday was 1 hour bike followed by 1 hour brick run. My run pace off the bike was 7:43, which is way faster than I want my pace to be. But, it was such a nice sunny day, and I felt good, so I pushed the pace a bit. Everyone that I met had a smile, the dogs were friendly, even the 2 deer at the side of the trail seemed happy. I have been debating about whether to do another IM next year. I was debating doing IM Whistler or IM Mt. Tremblant. I was also thinking about doing IM Cabo San Lucas (Los Cabos). It would be perfect for an all inclusive holiday at the end of winter. But, I am unsure how training would go through the winter. All of my training would be indoors (except running). I hate the indoor trainer now, I can't imagine doing 6 hour training rides inside on the trainer. 6 more weeks until my Ironman. I am getting excited, and nervous. Dwayne |

Sounds like the conditioning is starting to kick in!! But, every ride can be different especially if you are riding different routes. But with the training volume, any ride can be impacted by the overall volume for the week. The fatigue factor definitely starts to play a role in motivation. That shows the importance of rest days, and it is not just for physical rest, but knowing you can sleep a little later is a huge mental relief if only for a day!! You are doing great with your training! |

Hoping for an OWS tonight - otherwise trying to catch up on everything else in life! maggie Wow, all that after the weekend of training? That is awesome Maggie!! Glad your run went well!! |
