I have a friend who will be doing her first Ironman in a few months. Her first tri, she got about 50 yards into the lake, turned around and came back and dnf ed. I too have a problem breathing on race day. Breathing anytime is a challenge for me in the water, but with the adrenaline, and going out way too fast on the swim often has me doing sidestroke so I can breathe. Running and biking I can control my pace but put my face in water where I can't breathe when I want too and I wind up trying to get it over with as fast as I can. Man, your friend has come a long way. If I hadn't had my friend's hubby encouraging me from the side I don't know what I would have done. At one point I was thinking, "I am going to drown myself." Which is a panicky feeling, as I once slipped under at a pool when I was small and didn't know how to swim, scary. But I am a pretty good swimmer, as long as I'm not freaked out, obviously... I felt like I was breathing shallow, (nerves) before I even got in, but thought it would pass, it didn't. I need some sports psychology. LOL. I also think that thre pressure of having someone starting 10 sec. behind me was messing with my nerves, in my OWS tri last summer, I started at the back and to the side, and was much calmer. If I had it to do over I would have just drafted off the girl in front of me and paced with her, she finished about 30 sec. before me and I spent that much time at the ends of the lanes trying to maintain. I start the TI swim training tomorrow, redemption time. |

Expert 938 Orange County, California | Subject: RE: Milaminute and Sparco's Group - Closed I saw a tri calculator once, haven't been able to find it again. Basically it said it was almost always better to hammer the bike and limp home, rather than take something off on the bike and save something for the run. It took your previous bike times and run times and gave you suggested race results both with hammering the bike and saving something on the bike and almost everyone came out better hammering the bike. |

Morning Cash. Here's the one I use. It's pretty conservative (I beat the predicted time on my last Oly by 10 min or so). Bases a predicted race time on your previous swim/bike/run training PRs and best 2 weeks of volume from the last 6 weeks of training: EDIT: Oops...posted from my wife's blog...

Expert 938 Orange County, California | Subject: RE: Milaminute and Sparco's Group - Closed Thanks, I have that one too. I just can't find the one again that actually says hammer bike, and don't save anything for the run versus save something on the bike so you can hammer the run. It actually calculated the difference in your finish times if you left nothing for the run or saved something. |

Expert 938 Orange County, California | Subject: RE: Milaminute and Sparco's Group - Closed -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1200 yards tonight. Kick on side drills, got the hips up, but just about swallowed the whole pool trying to breathe doing that. Tried my first flip turn while actually doing laps rather than just practicing at the wall. Result, did plant feet on the wall and push off. Snorted water while upside down, and body position was all catty whumpus at the end. Think I wound up facing the sidewall, but not sure as I stood up and tried to blow the water out of my sinus cavity. __________________ |

I can do flip turns (poorly), but I choose not to spend my time getting better at them...I guess I haven't really found a reason to practice them for triathlon OW training...I just do a quick open turn...doesn't look as fancy, and I definitely don't get a break at the wall...
