Sensei ![]() | ![]() OK, thinking of throwing a race in for fun this weekend. I have a choice between a 5k, 10k, 1/2 mary, full mary or 50 miler...... I was thinking about doing the half. But it's been over two months since I ran that far. Now I'm leaning towards hammering a 10k.... Thoughts? |
![]() ![]() |
Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 50 miler?? Do you mean running or on the bike? Hope you don't choose that one if its a run race! Sounds like the 10K is the best choice. Keep in mind how much recovery time you want to give yourself afterwards. It could take a full week or two to bounce back from a 1/2 mary, especially if its been a while since you've run that distance. |

Sensei ![]() | ![]() 50 miles RUNNING! I'm thinking the same thing about the 10k.... Plus, the 1/2, full, and 50 are a "torture" runs - that's the point of the event. They stager the 1/2, full, and 50 to all be done around 2:00. So the half starts at noon (full at 10:00, and 50 at 6:00). Do you know hot it will be out at Lake Mead from noon to 2:00? 110, easy.... They start the 10k and 5k at 6:30 when it's cool, and get them off the course. That sounds nice to me....

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Lauren (and everyone else who may suggestions for me!! I've done two 2ish hour races so far. A half marathon and a sprint tri and haven't taken in any nutrition during either race. Toward the end of each one I have felt pretty tired and kind of dizzy after I crossed the finish line. I know it's a race and I shouldn't be feeling wonderful after I'm done, but I'm wondering if lack of calories is causing the dizziness or whether it's a normal feeling. If it matters, I am pretty thin and eat every two hours during the day. Pre-race I eat a peanut butter and banana sandwich about an hour and a half beforehand. So far I haven't had any stomach problems during any race so it seems like that's a good breakfast for me. Post-race after the half mary and the sprint I've had the dizziness problems, no problems with any other shorter distance running races. No problems with eating post race either... I find that post race food as quickly as possible So what do you guys think? Should I continue to do the 2 hour shorter races without nutrition? Is it normal to feel a little dizzy post race or should I take something in? |

Is it normal to feel a little dizzy post race or should I take something in? Good question. I have been thinking along the same lines. I have always taken in water during races and maybe some gatorade for lengths under two hours. However, I routinely train up to 90 minutes with NOTHING - no water or nutrition. I'm wondering if I should just blow through aid stations in a 10k from now on, and maybe make limited stops for a 1/2 mary if I'm well hydrated prior to starting. However, I'm always pretty spent and have some dizzyness after a HUGE effort like a race. I just drink and snack ASAP after and I'm fine. Edited by Aikidoman 2008-06-24 1:06 PM |

I find that post race food as quickly as possible So what do you guys think? Should I continue to do the 2 hour shorter races without nutrition? Is it normal to feel a little dizzy post race or should I take something in? I'm not sure about the dizziness and nutrition (I get dizzy bouts if I am dehydrated, and maybe a little if i'm underfed but it's more pronounced when dehydrated). But all my races have been around 2 hrs or less, and while I don't eat a lot, I do take in calories. For my last sprint, which was 1:41 or 1:42, I took in a gel IMMEDIATELY before starting the race, and sports drink on the bike (1 full bottle, plus 1 bottle of water, almost finished), but nothing on the run. This isnt' a ton of nutrition, but it's something, especially because breakfast came 2 hours or so before the race. Anyway, for me, in general, I always take in about 100 cals within 10 minutes before start, otherwise I will be hungry within 30 minutes, plus more later, maybe 100-200 more cals through the remainder of the race, depending on if it's 1:30 or 2:30 long. I think, you should probably take in some cals even for such a short race, especially if you are..."metabolically gifted" as I am, though you might be even more gifted My $.02, hope it helps! |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I know plenty of people who don't take calories during (and sometimes before) sprint races and half marathons. I am NOT one of those people. I think you should just play around with it and see what happens. Are you taking enough fluids before the race? I would maybe try a little sports drink or a gel with water half way through...it'll probably make a world of a difference ![]() |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for the input guys!! I've been reading that a lot of people don't take anything in for the shorter distances and that our bodies don't "need" it. It sounds like some people do need to take in some calories and I think I'm one of them. Personally it seems kind of crazy to think I wouldn't need anything for that time seeing that I'm used to eating fairly often even when I'm not doing a strenuous activity like racing! To heck with this "you shouldn't need it" stuff Edited by vball03umd 2008-06-24 2:04 PM |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You could be getting dehydrated. (I know others have posed this as a possibility.) During sprint distance races, I take a gel and some water about 15 minutes before the end of the bike. A little shot of simple carbs is probably what you need. |
![]() ![]() |
Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I agree with the above. It's often a trial and error thing and you need to figure out what works best for you such that you feel your best and have a great race! B races are great for this (like I should talk since I'm not doing any but...) because you also can test your nutrition plan including the race related nerves part of it. |

During sprint distance races, I take a gel and some water about 15 minutes before the end of the bike. A little shot of simple carbs is probably what you need. Yeah, I think that was the case for the 1/2 marathon. I know I was dehydrated after that since I drank a lot after the race and still didn't have to pee for 6ish hours post race....yipes! I think I did a pretty good job with hydration for the sprint and had to go right after I finished. Blah.. I really don't like the consistency of gels, but I guess I'll have to get used to them |
![]() ![]() |
Sensei ![]() | ![]() I was the opposite, actually. I was SO concerned with nutrition and fluids during a race, I was making sure I ate gels and drank lots on my first couple oly distance races at every 30 minutes or 45 (whatever the directions said). It just seemed to be a hastle and I didn't feel well. I found what works (for me), was to make sure I eat a powerbar or something decent before the race, a couple gels before the start, then load up the bike with water AND gatorade (or drink of choice). I get my quick colories through the drink and don't have to hastle with solids or how I feel with them. In fact, I'm going to experiment with not eating anything solid for even longer races. Solid food and races haven't mixed well for me in the past. |

Of course it had to be at an intersection where there was a lot of traffic! heh, don't worry, it happens to everyone!! in fact - sssh, don't tell hubby i told you, but he fell on saturday at the end of the century. an ironman finisher, who has ridden thousands and thousands of miles (literally), and he can still fall from the pedals. but he had a good reason. it was the end of the century, and he had clipped out on one side, then suddenly noticed the free beer tent and turned toward it too quickly while going at a slow pace, which put all the leaning on the wrong side, and he fell....in front of everyone...and bruised his butt. he said there was a collective "ooooohhhhhh!" and it was mortifying. talk about wounded pride so, just consider it part of your rite of passage - what a week, first tri, first fall! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yup... happened to me too recently. There was a little construction on the trail I bike on (and no warning about this!) so I stopped quickly to avoid it and didn't get both feet out in time and flew right into a road sign (which I caught with my shoulder to break the fall). Got a few amused looks from all the construction workers standing right there watching the whole thing! |
